Resurrection in dnd is fairly easy from a mechanical standpoint, just pick up some diamonds and some cleric levels, and you're good to go✨️
However, you can spice it up easily if everyone at the table wants to with this simple idea.
Product restriction, that's it.
Now you might be thinking that's not spicy, that's boring government meddling and well, yes but also no.
It all depends on why, and that question on its own gives you a great hook either for adventure or expanding the world.
Here's a few that came to mind:
Perhaps, a king keeps dying, and the kingdom has horded all the diamonds they can, guards have been sent out to shake down towns and villages for every last one.
Maybe, most of the diamonds have been used up, after all why wouldn't a rich royal or noble want to get resurrected? Now the only ones available are created through magic and well good luck getting an appointment with one of the towers wizards.
What if diamonds in your world come from another plane, so getting hold of them requires delving across the realm, and that's if you can even get there…
Diamonds are actually what remains when a dwarf finally dies, their soul pressed into hard matter. Getting hold of one is tricky as this a family relics, then there's the moral quandary of spending one should for another.
