summary: malnourishment mentioned briefly, both reader and zuko are fire nation, childhood friends, sickness mentioned, set in book 2, zuko as lee.
a/n: most Zuko fics I see on tumblr are adult!Zuko and while I do appreciate all of them I’ve been missing angsty teen Zuzu :(
Zuko had learnt many things since the two of you decided to split up from Iroh on your travels.
Firslty, Zuko learnt that despite the both of you being raised in the same academies and sifting through hours of etiquette classes, you definelty knew how to complain and whine about the earth kingdom heat. Very unsophisticated in his opinion.
Secondly, Zuko realised how hard food was to come by in the desert. This, in turn, would lead to his grumbling stomach and malnutrition being ignored as he subsocinsoily worried about how much you had eaten. Of course, he’d never say so explicitly.
And thirdly, Zuko realised that even thought you complained and nagged and whined, he would’ve definetely lost his mind in that desert by himself.
Today, you’d found it harder to complain with your head rested against his shoulder due to the sheer emptiness in your stomach.
Every now and then, you’d find the energy to hum something and attempt to keep either of you entertained, but you’d soon give up when you remembered how dry your mouth was.
“You’re not feeling sick again are you?” Zuko asked, his voice slightly raspy from his equal dryness.
His question refereed to a few weeeks go, when you were still travelling with Iroh and the sheer heat of escaping Azula had caused you to come down with a horrible fever, which left you bedridden for days.
Zuko hated how helpless he’d felt then, and he was prepared to keep an eye out for you this time. Even if neither of you wanted to admit it, he saw you as his responsibility.
“..’m fine,” you rasped back, cheek pressed into his shoulder and eyes half lidded as he manoeuvred the ostrich horse through the desert. “I’d tell you if I wasn’t feeling great.”
A part of him doesn’t believe you, but he simply lets out a grunt as a response and steers forward.
He made sure even through the heat, that he could feel your arm around his waist.
Neither of you had a plan, but both of you had a goal. Zuko was still persistent on capturing the avatar, even when you two were deserted like this. Your goal was to support him, as you’d always tried to do.
However, recently you’ve started to feel your opinions shifting. Was this worth it? You’d both given up a lot when you separated from Iroh, there was a lot at stake to travel through the barren earth kingdom with barely any supplies.
So, as you wiped a bead of sweat from your forehead and wrapped your arms tighter around him, you couldn’t help but let out a soft sigh.
Glancing past him, you look into the horizon and feel a slight wave of relief knowing a town was coming up.
Hopefully when you reached this place, you’d be able to take a much needed break.
Hopefully.

Recently watched: Mother! (2017), the audience-alienating and divisive mega-flop by director Darren Aronofsky. It certainly begins on an idyllic note, with a (seemingly) happily married couple (Javier Bardem and Jennifer Lawrence) renovating their dream home in the country. But when they are unexpectedly visited by a mysterious older couple (Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer), the blissful façade begins to unravel … I’ll leave it there! There’s some undeniably virtuoso filmmaking on display. The first half is nerve-jangling psychological horror, with Aronofsky creating a sense of dread, disorientation and nightmare logic. Mother! then goes full tilt Biblical apocalypse and turns wildly self-indulgent (the film is only 121-minutes but ultimately feels twice that long). For context, Andrew Fraser of The Guardian shrewdly terms it “part home invasion thriller, part religious parable” and “a surrealist take on Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (which) devolves into a full-blown Boschian nightmare.” Critics were divided: The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw raved that Mother! was “an event-movie detonation, a phantasmagorical horror and black-comic nightmare that jams the narcosis needle right into your abdomen”, while the reliably cantankerous Rex Reed called it “worst movie of the century” in The New York Observer. Martin Scorcese, meanwhile, was evangelical, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “Only a true, passionate filmmaker could have made this picture, which I'm still experiencing weeks after I saw it.” What’s undeniable is the box office failure of Mother! ended the A-list era of Jennifer Lawrence’s career (well, that and possibly overexposure). Which is unfair, as Lawrence is mesmerising: stricken with horror, face a mask of suffering and eyes glistening with tears, she evokes Catherine Deneuve in Repulsion and Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby. Mother! makes a good companion piece to Aronofsky’s earlier fear-and-suffering movie Black Swan (2010). (Just as I’d argue Natalie Portman gives her career-best performance in Black Swan, Lawrence does here). I wouldn’t “recommend” Mother! – approach it with caution! – but watching it is a genuine experience and it’s a true oddity.
To master the cosmic order and become a master of one's reality is a noble and colossal undertaking.
To master Death - and to align with Non-Being - is to undo one's Self and its attachment to causal reality.
In this reality, any ideology will inherently manifest its antithesis. To hold to any concept and discount its inverse is to divide the Self and impede integration. All things have substance only by virtue of their opposites. One cannot have wisdom without ignorance. Without weakness, strength has no meaning. In the dimensions of causal reality, the law of reciprocity is immutable. Only the limitless potential of the Void is infinite and lawless.
Both sides of your arguments are grossly shortsighted. People are more concerned with pointing fingers than zooming out and understanding the patterns of conditioned behavior. It is objectively impossible to force people to agree with each other. As long as humans are more concerned with being right than being objective, we will continue to be divided.
WILDLY UNPOPULAR LGBT PRIDE OPINION
‼️ ‼️ ‼️ ‼️ ‼️ ‼️ ‼️ ‼️
The Progress Pride flag is lame. It feels divisive; "Here are the lgbt people, here are the POC lgbt people, here are the trans people even though that's already a letter in lgb*t* and then let's tack on the intersex people" Separate identities and orientations have their individual flags. The six stripes are for all of us. You're a black, cis, lesbian? These stripes are for you. Asian, trans, and asexual? These stripes are for you. White, intersex, and bisexual? These stripes are for you. And even setting that aside, this design is messy and unattractive. Please think about the intention and message behind these kinds of things and don't just assume what's newer is better. I'd even be in favor of bringing back the original eight stripe flag. It was cut down to six for stupid reasons.
