Distributism emphasizes that property, production, and economic power should be widely distributed, owned by families, local communities, and small-scale enterprises, rather than concentrated in the state or giant corporations. Unlike socialism or communism, which centralize control over the means of production, this philosophy respects private property as a moral and civic right, ensuring that individuals and communities maintain control over the resources they need to live and thrive. Its focus on human-scale economics ensures that systems remain intelligible, accountable, and morally grounded, while its principle of equality of dignity guarantees that every person is treated with respect, regardless of wealth, role, or status.
I can't remember if this kind of business model was specifically mentioned in Pope Leo XIII"s Rerum Novarum or in any other encylical on Catholic Social teaching but it really does emphasize that man is not made for work, but that work is made for man.
We lived a carefree lifestyle living off the land and sea - gardening, fishing and claming. I thought that we would be contributing to the misery of the world if we failed to rejoice in the sun, the moon, and the stars, in the rivers which surrounded the island on which we lived and in the cool breezes of the bay. I began to believe that the world would be saved by beauty.

The Housing Crisis in California
I went to a farmer’s market today with my mom and while I was in line to buy some homemade pasta sauce, the guy said that he’s a paramedic 5 days a week and he sells at the farmer’s market on the weekends.
My brother has a co-worker who runs a pretty successful business on the side but still works as an engineer at their company for insurance. So he works 7 days a week.
When I was working at a small business bakery the owner barely gave himself time off to be with his baby to keep his business running.
The point of distributism/localism is that it’s meant to hold more people accountable for exploiting workers because they’re closer, and there’s more intimate connection between business owners and customers. But what about self-exploitation?
It might be hard to establish the distributist state without working on Sundays. And Sundays are meant to be the day of rest.
