You must allow me to digress for a moment and clarify my philosophical perspective, an perspective which is, by turns, Derridian and Deleuzian. You see, I hold that Derridaâs deconstruction of transcendental aesthetics dealt with the play of diffĂ©rance kinematically: in other words, Derrida described the play of diffĂ©rance without describing the forces and torques which affect the play of diffĂ©rance. Deleuzeâs transcendental empiricism, by contrast, dealt with the play of diffĂ©rance kinetically: Deleuze described the forces and torques affecting the play of diffĂ©rance, pushing, pulling, and twisting the play of diffĂ©rance in so many different directions. My own philosophical approach, which we might term a âdeconstructive empiricismâ, is a mechanics of diffĂ©rance, an attempt to juxtapose Derridaâs more sophisticated kinematics of diffĂ©rance with Deleuzeâs more sophisticated kinetics of diffĂ©rance. Let me stress here that to juxtapose is NOT to unify. My âmechanics of diffĂ©ranceâ maintains (i) that the kinetics of diffĂ©rance and the kinematics of diffĂ©rance differ from one another, (ii) that the kinetics of diffĂ©rance and the kinematics of diffĂ©rance defer to one another only insofar as they differ from one another, and, as a consequence of (i) and (ii), âmechanics of diffĂ©ranceâ maintain (iii) that the kinetics of diffĂ©rance and the kinematics of diffĂ©rance can only be compared and contrasted with one another and never combined, neither one into the other, nor all into an encompassing one.
To clarify my philosophical approach, my deconstructive empiricism, a bit further, I need to talk about how I understand the differences between general relativity and quantum field theory. The fundamental force of gravity, described by general relativity, is a spatio-temporal en-action: the force of gravity is attributable to the curvature of spacetime effected by energy, mass, and momentum. The other three fundamental forces, described by quantum field theory, are (im-)mediated inter-actions as opposed to spatio-temporal en-actions: the electromagnetic, the strong, and the weak forces are âcarriedâ by (im-)mediating particles or (im-)mediating excitations, by gauge bosons. I hold that Deleuzeâs more sophisticated kinetics of diffĂ©rance is more fundamental than Derridaâs kinematics of diffĂ©rance only insofar as the forces and torques that affect the play of diffĂ©rance are result of (im-)mediated inter-actions. In turn, I hold that Derridaâs more sophisticated kinematics of diffĂ©rance is more fundamental than Deleuzeâs kinetics of diffĂ©rance insofar as the forces and torques that affect the play of diffĂ©rance are the result of spatio-temporal en-actions. That being said, however, the forces and torques that affect the play of diffĂ©rance are always the result of both (im-)mediated inter-actions and spatio-temporal en-actions, and never a result of one as opposed to the other.
