The four giant flags attached to Sun Wukongâs back Beijing opera style that spell out his self-bestowed title âGreat Sage Equal to Heavenâ is such a recent addition from Stephen Chowâs 2013 journey to the west movie, but it is so ostentatious, so extra, so impractical, so dramatic I donât know how I ever lived without thinking he wore these flags doing the biggest visual power move when facing down heaven.Â

(Part 3 translations of the comic. Final 2016 chapters.) Chapters 20-28
True and False Monkey King
â
Chapter 20
(The Buddha, surrounded by his many disciples.)
Disciple, upper right bubble: âLord Buddha, Iâve heard that that demon monkey went to cause trouble in the Heavenly Kingdom again.â
âThe seal you put over him, is it reallyâŠ..â
Buddha: âThat is not possible. Judging by that demon monkeyâs ways, he doesnât have the power to have broken the seal I placed upon him. ButâŠâ
(Buddhists sitting on lotus seats, hovering.)
Buddha: âMy followerâs previous incarnation, âJingchanziâsâ memories are still sealed away. In addition to that demonâs uncanny creation by the sky and the earth.â
Buddha, looming over Jiang Liuâer: âIt is true that the seal is becoming weaker and weaker. When the time comes, I fear that it will be very hard to control him againâŠâ
(The Buddha reaches out a giant, gilded hand.)
Disciple: âLord Buddha, then should we notâŠright nowâŠ?â
Buddha: âNo. Unless it gets to the dire point where there are no more options, we cannot act so crudely.â
Buddha: âThis present demon is similar to that demon monkey, in that they share the same rootsâŠâ
(A demon, haunched over and brutishly shackled down with rods in his back.)
Buddha: âIf the day comes that that control cannot be implemented, the consequences will be catastrophic.â
(Rods stuck into the back of the demon, sparking.)
Buddha: âTo keep that demon under controlâŠthe buddhist seal must not waverâŠâ
(Another monkey demon bares his teeth, with six visible ears.)
Six Eared Macaque: âIâŠâ
âIâŠamâŠSix-Ears.â
âNotâŠam notâŠâ
âSunâŠâ
âWuâŠâ
âKongâŠâ
(Either Six-Eared Macaque is freed from his bonds, or he imagines staring at the back of â or standing in the shadow of â the Great Sage Equal to Heaven.)
Author notes: Looks like I dug myself into this hole. (At the start I said I was only doing quick one-shots of daily life.)
Translator notes: This is a spin on the existing çćçŽç âTrue and False Monkey Kingâ story. In the original, Sun Wukong goes away and is replaced by a hostile and aggressive version of him who hurts Tang Monk. The fake has the exact same power-set and strength as real Wukong. When two Wukongâs show up, the crew has to figure out who is the real one and get rid of the fake, Six-ears. In the end the Buddha helps reveal the fake and Wukong kills him with his staff.
âJingchanziâ is the name of Jiang Liuâer/ Tang Monkâs previous reincarnation, who was Buddhaâs important second disciple. There are different interpretations of why the Buddha sent Jingchanzi back to the mortal world to get the scriptures, especially since the journey west is kind of a giant redemption arc for the demon disciples. The most popular one goes like this: during one of Buddhaâs sermons, Jingchanzi fell asleep like a rebel. Thus, Buddha sent Jingchanzi back down to earth so he could appreciate his teachings better. The end.
âJiang Liuâerâ was the childhood name of Tang Monk/ Xuanzang/ Tang Sanzang/ Tang Seng (wow he has a lot of names I didnât even realiseâŠ). It means âchild who flowed down the river,â referring to how he was found by the monks as a baby.
â
Chapter 21
(Wukong, perched on a ledge, his eyes glowing.)
(Jiang Liuâer reaches out his hand doing something uneasy.)
(Heâs picking lots - a little game to make decisions. Whoever picks the straw with the mark on it is âit.â)
Jiang Liuâer: âHooâŠitâs not me.â
âWhoâs turn is it to get food this time laâŠ.â
(The straw with the red mark says âfood.â)
White Dragon, Xiao Bai, to Sa Yatou: âTold you not to play with them alreadyâŠâ
Zhu Bajie: âSa Yatou, looks like youâre it.â
Sha Yatou: âItâs ok, I wanna go.â
Sha Wujing, crouched to see Sa Yatou, right bubble: âYou have to be very careful going by yourself, alright, safety firstâŠRemember when you cross the road you need toâŠâ
Sa Yatou: âUhuh. I know already.â
Zhu Bajie, right bubble: âDo your best and get heaps of meat back here. *Cough.* âŠBecause youâre still in the growing phaseâŠ.â
Sa Yatou, snickering: âOk, Pig Uncle.â
Xiao Bai: âIf anybody dares pick on you then you tell Xiao Bai immediately, you hear that? WeâllâŠâ
Sa Yatou: âUhuh, yeah.â
Sa Yatou: âBig Brother Monk, you want anything in particular?â
Jiang Liuâer, glancing back: âNothing reallyâŠâŠitâs just thatâŠâ
âNever mind. Iâll come with you, weâll go together.â
Sa Yatou, left bubble: âButâŠthis time I got pickedâŠâ
(The straw lot disappears out of Sa Yatouâs hand.)
Sun Wukong: âGetting some food isnât complicated enough for you guys to chit-chat and push-pull over. With that amount of energy, Iâd already be there and back.â
(Sun Wukong takes off, leaving wisps of cloud in his wake.)
Sa Yatou: âThe Great SageâŠ.is he angryâŠ?â
Jiang Liuâer, bottom bubble in black background: âNo. Heâs currently happy in that heart of his.â
â
Chapter 22
(Flight trails streaked through the air.)
(Someone descends and lands.)
(The golden band sparks.)
Either Bajie or Wujing: âHead Brother, back so fast?â
Sun Wukong, suspicious: ââŠâ
Zhu Bajie: âThis time itâs not all peaches again is it?â
Jiang Liuâer, silhouette: âHahah, who told you guys to leave it to him and not go yourselves. As long as we have something to eat, thereâs nothing to complain.â
âRight, Great Sage?â
Sun Wukong: âJingchangziâŠâ
Voice, middle bubble: âYouâŠ.youâre not the Great SageâŠâ
â!â
(Itâs Sa Yatou. She hides behind Jiang Liuâer.)
Jiang Liuâer, faded into the background as Sun Wukong grips his weapon: âWhatâs wrong? Sa Yatou? If heâs not the Great Sage who else would he be?â
Sa Yatou, beside him: âItâs just â not him.â
Sha Wujing, right bubble: âHeadâŠHead Brother.â
(Itâs quite clear that this is the six eared macaque, not Sun Wukong.)
Six-ears: âOh?â
(White dragon horse, Xiao Bai.)
Xiao Bai: âYou â where did a imposter demon like you crawl out from? You dare masquerade as the Great Sage?â
Six-ears: âHeh, heh. Imposter?â
âEven if Iâm an imposter, what can the likes of you do?â
(Bajie attacks.)
Zhu Bajie: âOld ShaâŠâ
Sha Wujing: âHm.â
(Jiang Liuâer and Sa yatou shield themselves from the impact.)
Zhu Bajie: âThat damned monkey turns out to be an imposter?â
(The golden band seems to be sparking amidst the dust.)
(He attacks.)
Six-ears, right: âLittle girl. How did you recognise me?â
Sa Yatou: âPeople youâre close withâŠthe feelings you get around family.â
âYou wonât understand.â
Six-ears, raising his weapon: âMaybe I really canât understand it.â
âButâŠâ
âYouâre wrong.â
âI am him.â
(Translator note: It seems that Six-ears wears the golden band, but real Sun Wukong does not.)
(In canon, the golden band controls Sun Wukongâs behaviour by causing excruciating pain when one recites the âband-tighteningâ mantra.)
â
Chapter 24
(The Jingou Bang, poised before Sa Yatou.)
Six-ears: âLittle girl. Youâre not afraid?â
Sa Yatou: âNo. I trust the Great Sage. Heâll come to save usâŠâ
Six-ears, bottom right bubble: âHeheh. Your precious Great Sage isnât coming back. From now on I amâŠâ
âSunâŠâ
âWuâŠâ
âKongâŠâ
âHe canât even save himself right nowâŠ..â
âClose your eyes. I wonât let it hurt.â
(Sa Yatou closes her eyes.)
(A huge blast of power, of gods descending, turns Six-earâs attention.)
The god: âIâve always hated owing people favoursâŠâ
âSince youâre not that monkey, looks like I can use this chance to return it.â
Six-ears: âNezha. Iâd advise you not to butt-in on my business. Not that youâre ableâŠâ
Nezha: âThis business â is mine to butt-in.â
Six-ears: âYou really think I donât have the guts to take you?â
âFive hundred years ago you couldnât win me, today, you canât win all the same.â
(Image of the crew behind Nezha.)Â
Six-ears: âEven if all of you come at me at once.â
âTake my word for it. As if the few of you have a chanceâŠâ
A Voice: âShouldnât make your word so final, donât you think?â
âIâd advise that you hand the monkey back over to usâŠâ
(The Howling Sky Dog, Xiao Tian Quan.)
âI couldnât care less about other peopleâs business. But he has to at least give me back my post money.â
(Upon the godâs forehead is his closed third eye, the truth-seeing âSky-Eye.â)
(Erlang Shen has landed in the mortal world.)
Translator notes: Erlang Shen was the god that did win Sun Wukong in an uneven match and apprehended him back to Heaven. (Uneven because Sun Wukong was fighting Erlang Shen one-on-one when his powerful dog and Laozi got the jump on him.)
Erlang Shen is referring back to Chapter 14 last chapter of first translation at the end of the White Bone Demon arc. Sun Wukong posts him bones labelled as âdog foodâ but I guess he didnât pay beforehand so Erlang Shen had to pay on his end. Heâs here for his money back!
â
Chapter 25
(Heavenâs True General, Erlang Shen and the Marshal of the Central Altar, Li Nezha.)
Six-ears: âThisâŠcanât be possible.â
âYou two canât possibly be this powerfulâŠâŠ..â
(Erlang Shen looks at Six-ears through his truth-seeing eye.)
Erlang Shen: âItâs not us that has become more powerful, but you whoâs become weakerâŠâŠIt seems I canât discern what is off butâŠâ
âYou are not Sun Wukong. Or shall I say, you are not âthatâ timeâs Great Sage Equal to Heaven.â
(âGreat Sage Equal to Heaven is in red. Referring to the Havoc in Heaven.)
Nezha: âElder Brother, what does that mean? Even the Sky-Eye canât see through it?â
Erlang Shen: âHm. Canât see it. But â I can confirm heâs a fake.â
Six-ears: âIMPOSSIBLE! THIS IS IMPOSSIBLEâŠâ
(Six-eared Macaque flies away, the crew and gods brace in his wake.)
Zhu Bajie: âRanâŠhe ran awayâŠâ
Erlang Shen, pinky in his ear: âIâŠcanât catch up. If you want to chase, you chase.â
âTchâŠâ
Zhu Bajie: âHeh! Erlang! Whyâd you let that demon get away?!â
Jiang Liuâer, silhouetted behind Bajie: âWuneng, curb your rudeness.â
âEsteemed god, if you are able, I ask that you please help the Great Sage.â
Nezha: âElder Brother. Think of some ideas. Because that monkeyâŠ.â
Erlang Shen: âEven if I want to help him Iâm all out of ideas. Donât even know when that shitty monkey dropped off the face of the earth.â
Sa Yatou, leftmost bubble: âJust then â the Great Sage went to find food. He was gone for the time it takes for an incense stick to burn.â (About an hour.)
âWhen he got back it was the fake one.â
Erlang Shen, right: âOh? Like thatâŠâ
(Erlang Shen commands Xiao Tian Quan to follow the trail.)
âThen thatâs something to go on.â
âYou canât have eaten all those dog treats for nothing, right, Xiao Tian?â
(Translator notes: Nezha refers to Erlang Shen as âcousinâ in the comic but theyâre not...cousins. And theyâre not related. So I opted to put âelder brotherâ to show seniority etc.)
â
Chapter 26
(On the cliff of a mountain, Xiao Tian takes Erlang Shen and Jiang Liuâer to the find the real Great Sage.)
Erlang Shen: âXiao Tian. The monkeyâs here, is he?â
Xiao Tian: *Barks.*
Jiang Liuâer, probably: âThisâŠthis is a buddhist seal.â
(Probably Jiang Liuâer reading the mountainside seal.)
âSix words true from the heartâŠâ
âTo undo the buddhist seal.â
Erlang Shen: âLittle Master. Looks like we really canât do anything else. Weâve got our hands tied for this matter.â
Nezha: âWhatâs so high and mighty about it? Letâs break our way in and then talkâŠâ
âSomeone able to take down the monkey within the time of an incense stick burning to its end â I really do want see them.â
Jiang Liuâer, hands held together in prayer form: âFor you two to escort this humble monk here, I am already grateful to no end. Since this business is from my own sect, and since your identities in Heaven areâŠâ
âI simply cannot trouble you for this affair. Please forgive this humble monkâs discrepancies. Iâll go in aloneâŠâ
Nezha, right bubble: âMonk, but weâŠâ
White Dragon, Xiao Bai: âMonk, youâre insane! Youâre not doing anything but looking for death going in alone! Weâll go in with youâŠ.â
Jiang Liuâerâs silhouette: âI saidâŠâ
âAlone.â
Xiao Bai: ââŠâŠ..â
Zhu Bajie, right: âThe little Monkâs a little different today.â
Sha Wujing, left: âA littleâŠscary.â
The seals in red: âOáčâ
âMaáčiâ
âPadmeâ
âHĆ«áčâ
(Image of a chained monkeyâs hand.)
Sun Wukong: âHeheh. Buddha, you imprisoned this Old Sun for five hundred yearsâŠwhy this again?â
Buddha, black bubbles: âSun Wukong, your demonic nature has yet to be cured. How are you to protect the pilgrim who goes to collect the sutras?
Sun Wukong, white bubble, left: âI donât protect him because he happens to be the pilgrim.â
Buddha: âThese affairs are no longer any of your concern. The Buddha has decidedâŠâ
(The real Sun Wukong, strung up upon a giant buddhist seal.)
Jiang Liuâer: âDa Seng!â
(âGreat Sage.â)
Sun Wukong: âJiangâŠYou, why are youâŠ.â
Jiang Liuâer: âDonât you worry, Iâm going up there to get you down right now.â
Sun Wukong: âMonk, just go. This time the seal isnât so easyâŠâ
Buddha: âJingchanziâŠâ
âYou have a great responsibility upon your hands. Do not be brash. The Buddha has already commanded the other half of this demon to aid you upon your travelsâŠâ
âThose who become one with the greater good enlightens oneself, but they cannot adhere to the rhythm and whims of the small, this is how the Mahayana doctrine comes to beâŠâ
(i.e One must detach themselves from personal loyalty and individuals in order to serve a greater purpose.)
Jiang Liuâer: âI do not understand. What do you mean by his âother halfâŠ?ââ
Buddha, left: âThe day I subdued the demon beneath Five Elements Mountain, I split his spirit from one into two. The first half remains the demon you see before you. The second is âSix-ears.â
âAnd now the opportunity has come to command his use. He will help you finish your buddhist journeyâŠ.â
âEven if you cannot fathom this, based upon the power you have, if you try to release the seal your own spirit willâŠâ
Buddha, in red: âSmother like smoke and disappear.â
Six-ears, right bubble: âSmother and disappear? Sounds so scary.â
âThe thing I want to know â If I originally was half of him, then how am I supposed to smother and disappear?â
Jiang Liuâer: âYouâŠ.â
Six-ears, eyes glowing red behind Jiang Liuâer: âStep out of the way, little monk. Saving him is not up to you.â
(Six-ears, hearing the truth, leaps to save his original self.)
(The seal shatters.)
Sun Wukong: ââŠSpirit fragmentâŠâ
(Jiang Liuâer is now in possession of the part-spirit of Sun Wukong.)
Buddha, left black bubble: âJingchanzi. His split spirit must not be returned into the hands of the original bodyâŠâ
âIt cannot be allowed for the Demonic King to return to the height of the power, to the days ofâŠâ
âThe Great Sage Equal to Heaven.â
Jiang Liuâer, left: âLord Buddha. Your enlightened ways and exalted words are wasted upon me. I cannot yet understand your greatnessâŠ.â
âThe greater good is of course of the highest importance. But doing smaller acts of good cannot be neglected. Human nature is spilt into potential for good and evil. I would rather live this life of good and evil.â (I think.)
(Image of Jiang Liuâer close up, under the straw hat.)
Jiang Liuâer, right bubble: âAnd one more point. Lord Buddha, my name is Jiang Liuâer. Iâm a humble, simple monkâŠ..â
ââNot your pilgrim, Jingchanzi.â
Sun Wukong: âJiang LiuâerâŠâ
(Jiang Liuâer returns Sun Wukongâs other half back to him.)
(Sun Wukong regains the body and soul of his heyday.)
â
Chapter 27
(Outside the mountain, the crew is startled by a shockwave.)
Zhu Bajie: âThis isâŠâ
Nezha: âSo much demonic auraâŠ!â
(Sun Wukong reclaims his Ruyi Jingou Bang staff, now exactly as he was when he took heaven five hundred years ago.)
Buddha: âJingchanzi. Do you understand â the demon monkey has regained his vitality from the days where a sky filled with heavenly gods, and buddhist celestials, stood as his opponent?â
âShould he rise up and take the Heavenly Kingdom again, should he shake the Palace of the Underworld, can you shoulder this degree of sin?â
Buddha, lower black bubble: Â âMake haste, crown him with the golden band, curtail calamity.â
(Sun Wukong lashes out, swiping the Jingou Bang staff above Jiang Liuâer.)
(The gargantuan image of Buddha is wiped away.)
Buddha: âThe golden band is the only thing left in this world that can control his demonic natureâŠ.â
(Sun Wukong faces Jiang Liuâer.)
(Suddenly, Sun Wukong falls to his knees.)
Sun Wukong, bowing over the headband: âShould I become a buddhist, the world will see no monsters; should I become a monster, what now can buddhists do to me?â
âTo be monster or to be buddha; it is your will by reciting the words.â
Jiang Liuâer: âDaâŠSengâŠâ
Sun Wukong, top bubble: âOkay la, okay la. Letâs go, stop crying your nose offâŠâ
Jiang Liuâer: âWho said I was crying â I am not.â
Sun Wukong: âLook at you. Your snot is all getting onto my Jingou Bang staffâŠâ
End.
Author notes: The art style and background looks Iâve now definitely got down. But I canât promise that it wonât change.
Translator notes: The seals in chapter 27 show the band-tightening mantra âOáč maáči padme hĆ«áč.â Sun Wukong trusts Jiang Liuâer so much he accepts the golden band and hands him the key to keep him in check.
Big thanks to @dorkshadowsâ for translating the part about the Mahayana doctrine.  :D
Erlang Shen: âStill want to play, Xiao Tian Quan?â
Xiao Tian Quan: âUhuh <3â
End.
Author Notes: Now I can sigh out loud at the end. I canât believe I stuck with it and drew so much. Of course my motivation comes from all of you readers and your support. Itâs still that same line from me â as long as you like it, Iâll keep on drawing~~~
Translator notes: Xiao Tian is Erlang Shenâs loyal, deified dog. Thank you for reading and please support DENGANG on weibo. Iâll continue translating the 2017 chapters after a short break. Also, disclaimer: I have no affiliation with the author and this is not my work. I only do the english fan translations.Â
Qu Mo Lu ïŒ Part 2 of Translations, 2016 chapters, chapters 15-19
Treacherous Sea.
Chapter 15
Follow bubbles right to left.
(Lanterns blinking on boats out at sea.)
Girl: âGrandad, the rainâs gotten heavier again. Are we still able out to sea tomorrow?â
Grandad: âNo, no going out on these waves. A typhoon is coming. Letâs clear up and go.â
Girl: âGrandad, on that rock ledge â I think thereâs someone there.â
Stranger, standing on rock: âThis water splashing upon my body, I feel none of it. But then why is it that it feels so familiar?â
Girl and Grandad: âYoung man, donât do it, donât do anything stupid! Hey, you, hurry and get down, itâs so dangerous!â
â
Girl: âHahah, so you werenât trying to end your life, phew. Sorry for the misunderstanding.â
Grandad: âJudging on your smooth skin and unmarked body, you must be from of a family with money. A young master, right?â *Cough, cough.*
âYingzi, go find some clean clothes for him to change into.â
(Yingzi is the name of the girl.)
(As the stranger changes into new clothes, he shows a glimpse of his intricately tattooed back. A lotus flower is in the middle.)
â
Chapter 16
(A cult-like gathering. Note: keep in mind that any magical/religious terms used in this comic has no relation to christianity. The word âpriestessâ here is used to denote someone who has contact with the sea gods.)
Priestess: âIn this unwell world the gods are angry; us mortals are suffering! I have received word from Tongling Sea-God, his highness, just now. If we want peace and mercy there is only one way, there is no other choice. You should discuss about it amongst yourselves.â
Civilian: âPriestess, even the sky has forsaken us this year. This time the typhoon will stop us from being able to go out to see for many days!â
Head Fisherman: âAre you saying we have to sacrifice again? Itâs not as if we have limitless fifteen-to-sixteen years old girls in this village.â
Multiple Civilians: âYeah, Old Head.â
âBut Head, You â your Yingzi, isnât she at that age now? If you canât weâllâŠâ
âYeah, yeahâŠâ
(The Head Fisherman is the grandad of Yingzi.)
Head Fisherman, middle bubble: âNo! Yingziâs parents are all gone. In this family, Iâve only got this one niece left.â
Multiple Different Civilians: âHead Fisherman, you canât be so selfish like that! This is for the sake of our entire village.â
âYes, itâs a great responsibility.â
âYou have to do it for the lives of everybody. Itâs for the best.â
â
(In the house.)
Yingzi: âAchoo!â
Stranger: âYingâŠâ
(At fish.) âOh.â
Yingzi: âOk la. You donât have to stare at me like that, with that silly look. Last fish on the plate, you eat it.â
(Bowl and chopsticks fall and break.)
(Yingzi holds out her hand to the stranger as sheâs taken away.)
â
Stranger: âIâve never understood. Being a mere puppet to be used like me, whatâs the point of living at all?â
âMaybe the meaning of my life is to do battle and kill enemies. But then whatâs the meaning of fighting?â
âI remember now. The meaning of having to fight is to protect the people that I want to protect.â
âIt was like that in the pastâŠit will be like that in the future.â
(Yingzi is tied as a human sacrifice to a post.)
Stranger: âYingziâŠâ
âDonât be afraid. I will protect you. Just like before â like the people of Chen Tang Guan.â
(Chen Tang Guan is the âstrangerâsâ hometown, a great city. The golden bracelet he wears on his wrist enlarges into the Universe Ring äčŸć€ć.)
â
Chapter 17
This chapter is left to right.
Priestess: âAre youâŠyouâre really the Marshal of the Central Alter, great godâŠâ
âThâŠThird Prince, Nezha.â
(Nezha breaks the bonds, freeing Yingzi.)
Civilians: âThe Great God has descended! Help us!â
(More Translator notes, can skip: The story of Nezha is pretty well known and readers would be able to guess his identity from the hints given in the first chapters.
(An important part of Nezha mythology is the âHavoc in the Eastern Sea.â The people of Chan Tang Guan begged the Eastern Dragon King for rain and depending on the version, the King either snatches children to eat or the people put out human sacrifices, etc. After one of Nezhaâs friends were taken, he goes to upheave the sea kingdom and cause trouble for the King. Nezha gets into a fight with the Kingâs third son. Nezha is, like, 7 years old when he murders the Kingâs third son, prompting a huge siege over Chen Tang Guan by the King and his dragon brothers in revenge. They create devastating tsunamis, typhoons and floods.)
(Nezhaâs father Li Jing thinks that Nezha has shamed the family and doomed Chen Tang Guan. To save his people, and in the ultimate show of filial piety, young Nezha takes his fatherâs sword and commits suicide. Li Jing burns down Nezhaâs temple that was created after his death, saying that heâd been nothing but trouble for the family.)
(Nezha is then bought back to life by his teacher, Taiyi Zhenren, from the roots and essence of a lotus flower. He becomes a deity after rebirth, becoming the âThird Lotus Prince.â Li Jing and Nezha then have a terrible relationship and have many fights. Because Nezha was more powerful than Li Jin, the gods give him a magical golden pagoda than can grow and shrink â created to subdue Nezha.)
(Nezha is always depicted as a young child with two hair buns, but in this comic he looks much older. The images of Nezha in the rain on the sea, as well as the tattoos of the lotus on his back, evoke his past.)
â
Chapter 18
(The title page shows Nezhaâs Universe Ring and a lotus.)
(People are praying in a temple.)
(Yingzi has been praying to/for Nezha.) (Read left to right, up down.)
âExcuse me, Madam.â
Young Jiang Liuâer: âPlease, Madam, stop just a for a moment.â
Yingzi: âWhatâs the matter, Young Master?â
Young Jiang Liuâer: âForgive my forwardnessâŠâ
Yingzi: âThisâŠâ
Young Jiang Liuâer: âThe bracelet you wear on your wrist, may I ask where it comes from?â
âMadam, please donât misunderstand. Itâs just that your bracelet is much like something that an old friend of mine has. It reminded me of them, so I asked.âŠâ
Yingzi: âYoung Master. This bracelet is also my good friendâs. Once he comes back, Iâll like to return it to himâŠâ
Young Jiang Liuâer: âNo matter. It was this monk that misjudged. Sorry for the trouble. Sanzai (âthere is goodâ).â
âFarewell.â
(Young Jiang Liuâerâs eyes glow fiery gold.)
Young Jiang Liuâer: âLooks like our dear friend is the same person ayâŠâ
âJust that this one parting ended up being five hundred yearsâŠâ
â
Chapter 19
(Sun Wukong in armour with his feather crown, perched on a rock looking up at Heavenâs gate.)
(Clear skies and boats peacefully out at sea.)
Head fisherman/ Grandad: âYingzi, recently youâve been running to that temple non-stopâŠâ
âThe bloke is a heavenly deity, are you still thinking heâs going to come back?â
Yingzi: âAlright, Grandad, stop talking about itâŠâ
Yingzi, after something descended onto her boat lightning fast: âWhy is itâŠyou, YoungâŠYoung Monk?â
Sun Wukong, in the form of young Jiang Liuâer: âMadam, we meet again.â
âThis one here is that old friend of mine I was talking about. But right now I have some errands to run. Iâve got to leave some trouble in your handsâŠâ
Yingzi: âAhâŠokayâŠâ
â
(Eyes open.)
Yingzi: âYouâre awake.â
Nezha: âYingziâŠâ
âHow could thisâŠâ
Yingzi: âDonât move. Iâll tell you, it all went like thisâŠ.â
(She tells him what happened.)
Nezha: ââŠA monkâŠâ
Yingzi: âBefore he left he told me to give you thisâŠâ
(She holds out the pagoda, the only thing that can imprison Nezha.)
âHe said he was borrowing it from someone. And that âyou can give it back when you feel like giving it back.ââ
Nezha: ââŠ.â
Yingzi: âThat friend of yours â is he a really strong godâŠ? How did you guys meet?â
Nezha: âHeâŠis very powerful. But heâs not really a god or deity. Us two fought a match back in the day, five hundred years ago.â
In Heaven -
Li Jing, Nezhaâs Father: âOh Jade Emperor! That demon monkey stole my seven-jewelled pagoda!â
âAndâŠand beat me up in the process, you mustââ
Jade Emperor: âWhat! That demon monkey came up here?! Where is he now?â
Li Jing: âAfter he hurt meâŠheâŠhe just left.â
Jade Emperor: âOh, so itâs like thatâŠThen thatâs good. Thatâs good.â
End.
Author notes: So I drew a sequel. Got to put some stress on Sir Li Jing and the Emperor la.
Translator notes, can skip: (Tbh I canât read what the extra bit is, sorry. Itâs congratulating someone on something.) Five hundred years ago when Sun Wukong was wrecking havoc in heaven, Nezha was a marshal sent down with the army to apprehend him. In the book, Nezha fought Sun Wukong one-on-one and lost.
In the 1999 journey to the west tv show and 05 lotus lantern they added an incredible addition where Nezha and Sun Wukong fight but they bond over each otherâs skills and their mutual making-fun of the Eastern Dragon King, whom they both dislike. Sun Wukong invites Nezha back to his mountain to enjoy a hearty meal and they stop mid-fight to do just that. Then Nezha waves goodbye and runs back to Li Jing and the army at the end of the day after the hang-out, looking fake-disheveled, pretending to have suffered a defeat. They tell no one of this and no one ever knows. (I really really like this addition hehehee.)

Chapter 1Â
A monk opens to the door to a cottage on a rainy day.
Thugs: âEn?â
âVenerable Master, what are you doing so late in the night?â
âIs the Master wanting to stop an injustice by saving this girl?â
Monk: âNoâŠâ
âI am here to save you guysâŠâ
Thugs: âOlâ Seven, go check the merchandise.â
âHey Boss, canât you see sheâs still right there?â
Captured woman: âVenerable Master, Â you are headed west, I am headed east; from the very beginning, the well water will never impede upon the water in the river â why must you make such a scene and ruin my good work?â
âCapturedâ woman: âDo you really think Iâm scared you?â
Thugs: âShe was fucking-actually a demon this entire time!â
âCut it down!â
(Green demon takes down thugs, pulls out spines.)
(Green demon goes in to kill the monk.)
Monk: âThis monk has never saidâŠ
âThat IâŠ
âŠ
âHad come aloneâŠâ
The Great Sage Equal to Heaven, Sun Wukong (Black bubbles): âEvery time â Â you always have to waste your breath and run your mouth chit chatting, why must you humour these kinds of ants?â
Sun Wukong: âJiangâ ehemâŠMonk. These wild thugs, how should they be punished?â
Jiang Liuâer: âLetâs go. In these harsh times, (let us hope they can sort themselves out?).â
âJust then when you ascended from the sky, wasnât that a little too amazing?â
âIn this story Iâm the main character, ok?â
Sun Wukong: âSucker.â
End.
Author Notes: This is my first time drawing longer stories, the art style is a bit harsh. Iâm not even sure if I can keep it up. This is to whet your appetite (literal - spice up your eyes?) I will kneel/bow now.
âââ
Chapter 2
Jiang Liuâer on horse. The horse is clearly one morphed from a dragon.
Jiang Liuâer: âXiao Bai, Iâll go and get us some food. You wait outside the village for me.â
âHm. I know. On the off-chance a stranger sees you, it wonât be good if you scare them off.â
Xiao Bai, White Dragon Horse (Black bubbles): âMaster. There are dark enemies in this place, and they are heavy. It does not feel like a place where the living reside. Itâs better to be careful.â
(Jiang Liuâer goes off with Lantern.)
âMasâŠterâŠâ
Little girl: âPleaseâŠwaitâŠâ
âMaster. Pleas slow down.â
(A young, blind girl tugs on Jiang Liuâerâs robes.)
Little girl: âMaster, weâve gotten off on the wrong foot, you misunderstand. Please hear me speak.â
Jiang Liuâer (white bubble): âReally. You think you can trick this monk just like this? By tying yourself to this dying girlâs body? What are your intentions?â
Little girl: âPlease help me. I beg of you, take me out of this village. This place is so full dangers. We should leave immediately.â
Ghost in little girlâs body: âUs mother and daughter have had it very harsh. My daughter was so unfortunate to lose her sight. But I could not sustain our livelihoods by being a beggar. These starved, desperate villagers, starved for years, singled me out as an outsider, and cut me down to share my flesh between themâŠâ
âMy grudge saw me take form as a spirit tied to my daughterâs body. I protect her from harm. But the villagers â theyâve changed and become even more virulent, and I am losing strength. Soon I will be nothing but dust and smoke and my daughter will be hungry and cold for the rest of her days. She will learn to resent even with the short time she has left in this worldâŠâ
âVenerable Master, please see with the kindness and compassion in your heart. Please save my daughter â leave quickly, or the villagers will discover youâŠâ
Cannibals: âFleshâŠâ
âFleshâŠthereâs fresh flesh to eat hereâŠâ
âKillâŠeat fleshâŠâ
âKillâŠkill them all, and then we eat tonightâŠkillâŠkillâŠâ
Ghost Mum: âGreat Master, take my daughter away from here! Even if I turn to flying dust and dissipating smoke, I will still kill these animals!â
Jiang Liuâer: âThereâs no use. You canât stop them. They canât see you, and you shouldnât add to your sins. Do you really not wish to reincarnate?â
Ghost Mum, dissipating: âEsteemedâŠVenerable Master, then you take my daughter and go. Iâll disappear now â you have to hold up, alright?â
âMasâŠâ
Jiang Liuâer, out of breath: âHahâŠHahâŠhow greatâŠI canât run anymoreâŠbutâŠâ
âHahâŠWhiteâŠâ
âDragon.â
(White horse looms out.)
(An explosion-like scene, White Horse morphs into a towering dragon, red eyes shining and looking down on Jiang Liuâer.)
Jiang Liuâer: âXiao Bai. You hungry? I bought the food back to you.â
Xiao Bai, slithered close to Jiang Liuâer, red eye larger than Jiang Liuâerâs entire head: âMasterâŠThese villagers are livingâŠâ
Jiang Liuâer: âTheyâre live people?â
âOh. Oh. I couldnât tell.â
Sun Wukong, lounging on a tree: âLittle Monk. You really favour Xiao Bai, donât you? Under these pretty circumstances when would you ever stop to think of me?â
Jiang Liuâer: âI was just worried that youâll go ahead and break the sky againâŠâ
Sun Wukong: âWhat about this silly girl, Sa Yatou? You going to keep her with you on your travels?â
Jiang Liuâer: âSa YatouâŠâ
End chapter
Authorâs notes: Chapter 2 I did a long while after chapter 1. The style is still experimental and fumbly. Though itâs more rigorous/strict than before.
âââ
Chapter 3
Jiang Liuâer leading Sa Yatou on the white dragon horse.
Sa Yatou: âHungry.â
Jiang Liuâer: âYouâre hungry?â
*horse neigh*
(Wukong waves a peach above Sa Yatou.)
*Sniff, sniff*
Sun Wukong: âWant to eat?â
Sa Yatou: âUhuh.â
Sun Wukong: âOpen your mouthâŠâ
(Wukong is holding a magical pill.)
Jiang Liuâer: âHey!!! Donât you spoil her before lunchtime!â
(Sa Yatou eats whatever Wukong gave her like a rebel.)Â âWhat the heck did you give her to eat?!â
âSa Yatou!! Stop eating it, spit it out quick!!!â
Jiang Liuâer: âYour eyesâŠâ
Sa Yatou: âAhâŠ.?â
â!!!â
Sa Yatou, able to see for the first time (No bubble): âMonkâŠMonkâŠâ
Jiang Liuâer (No bubble): âHahahâŠyeahâŠâ
Sun Wukong with scarf: âTchâŠâ
In Heaven. One of the disciples of Taishang Laojun/ Laozi: âOld General, Old General, just then when I was counting the celestial pills, I counted one missing.â
End Chapter.
Authorâs Notes: My intentions were to make short stories on daily life. And I was determined to get this image out after watching Monkey King: Hero is Back⊠(shamelessly warms my heart).
âââ
Chapter 4
(Translator Note: Thereâs a change in this chapter and you now have to read panels and bubbles from Left to Right. Like normal/ not in manga format.)
The crew is travelling and flies circle around Jiang Liuâerâs head.
*Sniff, sniff.*
Sun Wukong: âOiâŠLittle Monk! Are you still not going to take her for a bath?! She stinks!!â
Jiang Liuâer over image of Sa Yatou: âIâm a monk here. How can I bathe with a female child?â
Sun Wukong: âAnd here, Iâm a monkey.â
Jiang Liuâer: âThen who else is thereâŠâ
(White horse, Xiao Bai, stands majestically.)
Jiang Liuâer: âWaitâŠâ
Sa Yatou: âXiao BaiâŠXiao Bai!â
(Xiao Bai huffs.)
Xiao Bai: âCâmon then. Letâs go bathe.â
Sa Yatou (No bubble, text over head): âXiao Bai is so prettyâŠâ
Other Thug: âHeh hehâŠlooks like itâs a beautiful womanâŠâ
Xiao Bai: âLetâs play some hide and seekâŠwould you like that? Close your eyes now.â
Sa Yatou: âOk.â
âOneâŠ
âTwoâŠâ
End.
Authorâs Notes: After I finalised the âcoolâ version of Xiao Bai the White Dragon Horse, the monk never rides her again. (After this chapter may everybody please supervise. This is now an official comic/ manhua.)
âââ
Chapter 5
(Note: Continue reading from Left to Right.)
(Name of cave next to demon which I have trouble reading sorry.)
Demon (black bubble): âThereâsâŠthereâs people comingâŠâ
âMy King â theyâre coming! Myââ
Demon King: âWhoâs coming?â
Demon subordinate: âItâsâŠa monkâŠjustâŠjust two humansâŠâ
Demon King: âHahahâŠSince that monkey isnât hereâŠâ
(Skulls) âEven if Heaven itself tries to stop meâŠâ
âThe monk still diesâŠâ
(i.e The Demon King wants to eat Jiang Liuâer because legend says eating his flesh would make you immortal.)
âAhchooâŠ!â
Xiao Bai: âEven idiots can get a cold?â
Sa Yatou: âIs the monk done yet??â
(Jiang Liuâer is working on something.)
Jiang Liuâer: âErâŠjust wait of nightfall, then itâll be finishedâŠâ
Sa Yatou: âOhâŠok thenâŠâ
Demon King: âTonight you two will be the gourmet food of yours truly, the KingâŠâ
âDo you want to be eaten from the head first or the feet?â
Demon subordinate: âMy Great KingâŠis asking youseâŠoi.â
(King sweat drops, a nervous wreck.)
(Sa Yatou, Xiao Bai and Jiang Liuâer watch the paper lantern that Jiang Liuâer made. The lantern reads âbuddhismâ or âbuddha.â)
Sa Yatou: âWah! <3â
Jiang Liuâer: âItâs so silentâŠitâs pretty, right?â
Jiang Liuâer: *Very pleased with himself for his one lantern.*
Xiao Bai: âLook over there, quick.â
Jiang Liuâer: â?!!â
Zhu Bajie (Pigsy): Now make your Pig Elder another hundred lanternsâŠor (?) youâll regret it.
End.
Authorâs Notes: Iâm not great doing long serious topics (actually I canât stop my own silliness from getting into itâŠoh, itâs my fun personality.)
âââ
Chapter 6
*SpinâŠspinâŠ*
Swordsman: âThereâs a strong smell of demon around here. Disciple, choose a good house.â
Disciple child: âThen letâs stay in this one. Letâs see if this timeâŠthereâs really people hereâŠ!!â
Disciple child knocks on door: âAnybody home?â
Behind door: âComingâŠâ
Disciple child: âExcuse me, but may I ask if the homeowner has seen any strange guests?â
Behind door: ââŠâŠ..Us lot are temporary guests hereâŠâ
Swordsman, startled: âEn?!!!â
âThe stench of demon is rife!â
Swordsman, a Taoist exorcist, chants: âŠ.. (Very archaic language. Not sure which direction itâs supposed to be read in so canât translateâŠforgive meâŠitâs Mumbo JumboâŠ)
âCommand!â
Talismans circle the Swordsman as he uses his technique: âDemon-ridding seal!â
Disciple child: âHeavens!âŠHeâs using so many sealsâŠDoes Master not want to live through the next half year? [Because weâll be out of seals.]
(Inside the house, the three figures loom with seals stuck everywhere.)
Zhu Bajie: You bastard! If you want to seal demons then seal your damn demons â whatâs the meaning of this?!!â
(On Baijieâs necklace is the word âGao,â the surname of his wife and the house he briefly married into before the journey to the west.)
Xiao Bai: âSo noisyâŠâ
Swordsman (right bubble): âSuch an immensely strong pig demonâŠHeads up for my magical artefactâŠ!â
âArggh!!â
Zhu Bajie (left bubble): âMotherfuckerâŠthis Old Pig is going to waste youâŠ!â
(Left to right)
Jiang Liuâer: âThis was all a great misunderstanding, Taoist master, I ask for your forgiveness.â
Swordsman/ Taoist master: âVenerable Master, your words are too heavy. It was this one that was at fault.â
Disciple child: âMasterâŠyouâre bleedingâŠâ [insinuating he actually fought Bajie? XD]
Swordsman: âHahaâŠthey must be frightened by my great Taoist powers.â
(The Ruyi Jingou Bang, wreathed in clouds, towering high above the atmosphere like a colossus, Â falls.)
Disciple child: âCâmon nowâŠletâs go get our moneyâŠ[for ridding the demons.]â
Swordsman: âWhâwhat the heck?â
End.
Author Notes: I originally wanted to have the Great Sage have a little go, but then I thought â these are just a couple of small fry. Not nearly enough for the Great Sage to pick his teeth with.
âââ
Chapter 8
(Name Xiao âYuâ as in âjade.â)
Nine-tailed fox: âXiao Yu, is it really worth doing this for a man? Just because he helped you on one instance.â
Two-tailed fox, Xiao Yu: âOlder Sister, I understand. But â this debt I owe is something I must pay back.â
âI cannot help that I have no other powers, Iâve only this body of blood and bone I can rely on to pay the debt. Please, sister, understand.â
âThat year I was captured by hunters, if it wasnât for him, I would have long been skinned and sold off to the market.â
(She has the sister cut off one of her tails.)
Xiao Yu: âUp until today Iâve endured misfortune and hardship!â
*Sigh.*
âThis is the only way I can pay back the kindness shown to me.â
Nine-tailed fox, sister: âBut even if you have a thousand tails, that wonât help you gain peopleâs trustâŠâ
Xiao Yu: âAh.â
Daughter: âMother, Iâm back!!â
Mother: âI told you to go up the mountain and get (?), why are you back so late?â
Daughter: âItâsâŠbecause the mountain path is hard to walk.â
Mother: âWhy is the wife of the man in the mountains so pompous? Look at you â you go up the mountain once and come back looking like this. No wonder itâs been all this time and you donât have a single child.â
âUgh! But at least this luck youâre having is good. Every time you go up there youâre just in time to bump into this white foxâŠ(?)â
Xiao Yu: âIsâŠmay I askâŠâ
Jiang Liuâer: âHello, Madams, may I ask if you may spare us some food?â
End Chapter.
Author Notes: Itâs a cameo of âLiaozhai fox goddess showing gratitudeâ story. But the monk is chucked into the chaos.
Translator Notes: In chapter 9 this âMotherâ is suddenly changed to a Grandmother and idek?? So Iâm going to keep it as âMother.â
âââ
Chapter 9
(Read panels right to left again, lol).
Jiang Liuâer: âThis humble monk hails from the Eastern Mainlanââ
The Mother: ââMonk, in these kinds of times how are we supposed to have spare food for you?â
Jiang Liuâer: ââŠâŠâ
Mother: âAnd speaking of, since when did buddhist monks harbour small girls and take them running all over the world? Or are you a kidnapper? A criminal?!â
Jiang Liuâer: âIf I am, then at least let me get this child a bite to eat.â
Mother: âI already said â thereâs no food in the house we can spare. Hurry up and leave, do you hearâŠâ
Mother: âXiao Yu!! What are you doing?! Get these people out of here alreadyâŠâ
(Daughter bobbing to talk to Sa Yatou.)
Daughter: âYou hungry?â
Sa Yatou: âUhuh.â
Daughter: ââŠBut this Venerable Monk and poor little girl look in needâŠâ
Mother: âYou failed housewife!! Already married for half a year and still canât conceive a child and now look â I donât know where you learned to lure this wild man to the houseâŠa;lsdkfja;ldskfjâŠâ
(Jiang Liuâerâs poker face.)
(Sa Yatou.)
Voice: âStupid old hag! This mistress cannot stomach your hullabaloo taking up half the damned day! I see that you must be about done with your life!â
(Daughter, shocked!!)
Mother: âYou little brat!! What did you say?!â
(White Dragon Horse, Xiao Bai, flies off of Sa Yatouâs shoulder, morphing back into her human form while rolling up her sleeves for a fight.)
Xiao Bai: âIf this mistress doesnât break your mouth today Iâllâ!! Sa Yatou, stand back! Very Far! Donât get splashed by bloodâŠâ
Now-one-tailed fox, Xiao Yu: âYou are not to touch my household!!â
Xiao Bai, dragon form: âThe likes of a small fox dares to stand in my wayâŠâ
Xiao Yu: âI dare not. But these people have been kind to me and I owe them a debt. I beg you, great goddess, to spare them. Iâm willing to give my life.â
Jiang Liuâer: ââŠâŠ..â
Jiang Liuâer: âI donât really want to butt-in to your private affairs, but perhapsâŠyou should consider looking after the âpointâ of your conversationâŠâ
Xiao Yu: ?! âGrandma!!â
Mother, overwhelmed: âDemonsâŠâ
Daughter: âXiao Yu! Whatâs wrong with my mother here?!â
Mother: âShut it. You unfilial child, if it werenât for Xiao Yu your mother would have gone to see the King of the Underworld. After today if you dare be anything but good to Xiao YuâŠIâllâŠIâll axe you aliveâŠâ
Daughter: âOkâŠMotherâŠâ
End.
Author Notes: The plot ran away from me. Donât know how I ended up with cranky mother-in-law, took a while for me to come around.
âââ
Chapter 10
(Read left to right hereâŠit keeps changing between chapters lol.)
(Gods of Death, collectors of spirits to the Underworld who work for its King, Yenwan.)
Black death god: âSir SeventhâŠlatelyâŠour overtime work has gotten extensiveâŠOnce we finish up this round, letâs go drink.â
White death god, Sir Seventh: âAyeâŠthe time is right. Letâs hurry up and finish up.â
Sa Yatou: âzzZZ.â
White death god: âOh, itâs a little girl. How sadâŠlook how young this one isâŠâ
(Top right corner, White death god reads the death register.)
White death god: âEn?! According to the registryâŠthis girl should have died months agoâŠâ
Black death god: âThatâs alright.â
âLetâs take her spirit and then talk.â
Black death god: âYour life-force has been all used up. Come with us nowâŠâ
White death god: âDonât be afraid, little girl. Weâre ghost collectors. You need to come with us.â
The Great Sage Equal to Heaven, Sun Wukong: âWeâre not about to go anywhere.â
Black death god: âEh?âŠHow dare youâŠyou have the audacity to hinder the Underworld Constabulary?â
Sun Wukong: âYou two ghost officers have such a flimsy memory.â
âI wonder if Olâ King of the Underworld still remembers This Old SunâŠâ
Death gods: ââŠGreatâŠGreat SageâŠâ
Word next to Sun Wukong: âFuck off.â
King of the Underworld: âYou two idiots, youâre to leave that monkey alone, far, far away!â
Death gods: âYesâŠyesâŠâ
King of the Underworld: ââŠnearly scared me to deathâŠâ
End.
(Translator note - This part is alluding to Sun Wukongâs exploits before he upturned heaven. He went to the underworld and turned everything upside down there too â including wiping his name off the death registry. So he wrecked the Underworld once. Not something the King would forget hahaha.)
Author Notes: King of the Underworld is here to be shy and cute. Not sure if heâll appear again after this~~
âââ
Chapter 11
(This chapter heavily alludes to another chinese folklore: The Cowherd and Weaver girl, or Niulang ZhinĂŒ. Basically itâs a story about forbidden love â  Cowherd and Weaver girl loved each other but were not allowed to be together. Weaver girlâs mother banished them to opposite sides of the silver river. But the birds began to pity them, so once a year and only once a year the birds fly and form a bridge over the river to reunite the lovers. They spend one day together before they must part again until the next year. Bittersweet tragedy.)
(Read right to left again please.)
Jiang Liuâer: âIs it pretty? Itâs better than the lanterns we put up.â
Sa Yatou: âUhuh! But there arenât as many as the ones we put upâŠâ
Festival goer: âBaby, letâs buy you this cloth doll, yeah?â
Child: âOk Mother! I want to buy a Weaver girl doll!â
(Image of silhouettes of Sa Yatou on Jiang Liuâerâs shoulder and the mother holding her childâs hand.)
Child: âMother dearâŠDo Cowherd and Weaver girl really only get to see each other once a year? I wish I could see how they meetâŠ.â
Festival mother: âSilly childâŠWeâre but mortals. How can we possibly see thatâŠâ
(Sa Yatou.)
Jiang Liuâer: âWhatâs wrong? Sa YatouâŠare you thinking about your Mom?â
Sa Yatou: âNâŠNoâŠâ
Jiang Liuâer: âIâm sorryâŠthis I truly cannot help you withâŠbutâŠâŠâ
(Jiang Liuâer turns his head.)
Jiang Liuâer: âI can give you my personal protective charm. It has intense super powersâŠIâd say, maybe it can help you grant your wishes.â
âThough it is a bit oldâŠWant it?â
Sa Yatou, hands up: âI want it!â
Sa Yatou: âI really just wanted to have Mom be with me for one more festival.â
âJust one more would have been goodâŠâ
(Great Sage Equal to Heaven plushie.)
(Epilogue: silhouettes of Cowherd, Weaver girl, Sa Yatou, Sa Yatouâs Momâs ghost and Sun Wukong all standing on the bridge made of birds.)
Sa Yatou: âMum! LookâŠitâs really the Cowherd and Weaver girl!â
Ghost Mum: âGreat SageâŠis this really ok?â
Sun Wukong, to the lovers: âDonât mind us. You two continue.â
Weaver girl: âThese people are so annoyingâŠWe only get to meet once and year!â
Cowherd: âShh!âŠPlease be more quiet. That monkey is someone even my father has to make an exception for.
King of the Underworld: âWhat the hell are you doing on the job?!!! Canât even keep an eye on a ghost?!!!â
Death gods: ââŠ.But you said to keep far, far away from thatâŠmonkeyâŠâ
End.
Author notes: This one about Hero is Back is an official commission (?the translator thinks?) Thank you for the official support!
âââ
Chapter 12
(Translator note: This one takes place in the middle of a well known story in Journey to the West â the infamous White Bone Demon arc. White Bone Demon is vicious and sly and plots a way to eat Tang Monk by getting rid of Sun Wukong. She first turns into a beautiful young lady to get cosy next to Tang Monk and co. But Sun Wukong has this fiery eye technique that sees through disguises. So he of course sees through the facade and immediately âkillsâ the demon.
(But the demon escapes and leaves a shell of a human body for Tang Monk to get extremely angry over. Because, to his human eyes, Sun Wukong just straight murdered a nice lady. Sun Wukongâs disciple brothers donât have the ability to see through disguises either. They all think heâs guilty. White Bone Demon turns into two more people and this repeats. On the third kill, Tang Monk punishes Sun Wukong and then forces him to leave. Forever.
(White Bone Demon then gets her white, bony fingers on Tang Monk. The DENGANG version doesnât play out or end the same way. But the âtwistâ really relies on knowledge of the original lol.)
Demon lackey: âMistress. The Tang Monk has been captured as you ordered.â
White Bone Demon: âSo youâre saying that the monk really disowned the monkey? Hahaha.â
Lackey: âMistress is cunning. That monkey has already been driven away back to Flower-fruit Mountain. It is unknown where Tang Monkâs other two disciples are.â
White Bone Demon: âLet me see myself. Have a look-see at this Tang Dynasty monk.â
(White Bone Demon looks over her shoulder, glancing at the painting of a beautiful woman.)
(Image of Jiang Liuâer.)
White Bone Demon: âVenerable Master. Youâll have to excuse me. This young woman has not shown you a proper welcome. Please do not fault me.â
âAbout my three transformations to play the monkey. What does the Venerable Master think of my little show, pray tell?â
White Bone Demon, human face: âI originally thought that you were hopeless. I didnât want the Venerable Master to visit like this.â (Idek either. Best I could do for this line I donât get, sorry.)
Jiang Liuâer: âOn your selfish whims, youâve ravished villages and sowed misery, murdering countless innocents. All of the surrounding villages have been maimed by your doing.â
White Bone Demon: âOh Venerable Master, those words are too serious. This lowly one has only invited the neighbouring villages to be guest here.â
(Bones of the villagers carpet the caverns.)
White Bone Demon: âIn just a short moment, when youâre in the Underworld, you can help them find salvation.â
Jiang Liuâer: âYou repulsive bastard. You deserve no mercy.â
âââ
Chapter 13
White Bone Demon: âFor many centuries, Iâve always been careful, careful. Iâve waited so patiently for this fortunate chance. All these years, all those villagersâ who were massacred and those who luckily escapedâŠâ
(White Bone Demonâs mouth opens.)
âBut now weâre here. Itâs all alright now that I have you â flesh that will grant me immortality. Iâll become powerful enough to instantly achieve godhood.â
(White Bone Demon sucks Jiang Liuâerâs life out.)
Jiang Liuâer: âTch!â
*Headbutt!*
Jiang Liuâer: âYou really are pretty tricky. Otherwise we wouldnât have had to act out this great extravaganza to trick you into revealing your true form.â
White Bone Demon: âWhat!?â
(The squad arrives.)
Either Sha Wujing (man with crescent blade) or Zhu Bajie (Pigsy): âRepulsive demon. Hurry up and repent. Do you really think monk meat tastes that good? You think we were going to be easy pickings?â
White Bone Demon, falling to her knees: âVenerable Master, please spare me.â
âGreat Master, the truth is I am a piteous person. Murdered in cold blood by ruffians. My bones disintegrated. Please, I beg the Venerable Master, under the good grace of Heaven please forgive me this one time.â
Jiang Liuâer: âAmitofo. Sanzai. Sanzai. (There is goodness. There is goodness.)â
Jiang Liuâer: âWujing. Bajie. Donât hit her so hard that she shatters.â
âââ
Chapter 13
Please read right to left.
(Pic of Bajie.)
(Three distinct weapons can be seen beating the crap out of White Bone Demon: White Horse/ Xiao baiâs sword, Bajieâs nine-toothed rake, and Wujingâs crescent blade.)
White Bone Demon, escaping: âThis lot of monks are brutal. Nothing like the stories.â
Jiang Liuâer: âKid, donât look.â
White Bone Demon: âFortunate that I still have one more spirit-escaping technique. Otherwise Iâd really have been ground into dust by them.â
âItâs time to leave my estate. Mistress I shall sink into the shadows. Itâs no matter, sooner or later Iâll get my prize. Heheheheheh.â
Voice, golden eyes: âOi. Youâre thinking too much.â
âBut this has been just my luck. My holiday back home was pretty sweet.â
White Bone Demon: âSunâŠSunâŠWukongâŠâ
White Bone Demon, running: âThis Mistress cannot politely remain.â
Sun Wukong: âWant to runâŠâŠ.â
Zhu Bajie: âThat Bimawen, stableboyâs back isnât he? Hey Monk, didnât you say he gets a three day holiday?â
Sha Wujing (probably): âHm, yeah. I thought this time he was going to let us stretch our muscles.â
