How does a declaration of war work in Britain? Does Parliament draw up a declaration then send it to the Prime Minister and Monarch for signatures?
It's a slightly complicated process due to Britain's constitution (or lack thereof). Formally it rests with the monarch's royal prerogative to declare war. However, as Britain is a constitutional monarchy it is parliament's role to debate and decide on the practicality of war with another nation. Once Parliament, or rather the PM and his cabinet has deemed it necessary to declare war the Monarch is then consulted and the declaration is formally signed by the king or queen. Interestingly Britain has not formally declared war on another country since 1942 when war was declared on Japan's ally Thailand. Since then Parliament has simply voted on military action with the monarch's royal prerogative bypassed with their approval. Thanks for the question.
