(Recommended song, Dear Pet Rock by tv room)
After leaving Trollmarket the pair walked home together,Jim checked his phone,he had a bit of time before his mom might get worried. It was dark out but it was normal for fall,6pm wasnât bad; Toby didnât care at all though,he was busy recounting the experience.
âAnd thenâŚBOOM! That big axe smacked him away. Oh Jimbo,I was sure I was a goner if that didnât happen.â
Toby struck a pose as they walked up the driveway of his house, hands on his hips, chest puffed out, âTrollhunter who? Youâre looking at Tobias Domzalski the buttwhooper; you better watch out now Jimbo.â
Jim busted out laughing, his best friend joining him, smiles on their faces while Toby got his house key from his pocket. The laughter and excitement slowly faded away from Jimâs system, his gaze settling on Tobyâs back; he was standing on the porch, jiggling the key into the lock. A lump had formed in his throat, making it uncomfortable to swallow, where that warm laughter bubbled in his chest now ached with hollow pressure.
He stood behind Toby who was saying something about being sore from the duel,he tugged the back of his friend's vest. Toby paused his actions and was about to turn to face Jim but felt a weight atop his head stop him. Jim rested his forehead atop his shorter friend, the distinct scent of laundry detergent mixed with sweat tickling his nose. His friend was warm, alive, vibrantly him,it made his nose sore and his eyes hot. When he spoke his voice was hoarse and soft, only loud enough for Toby to hear due to proximity.
âYouâre not allowed to die, Tobes, okay?â
Toby scoffed playfully,âTch,Ima live forever!â
But he didnât get any response from Jim,not even an amused huff of air, instead he felt something hot and wet splash the back of his neck. He realized Jim was actually cryingâŚhis brain raced to find a way to comfort him even if he couldnât understand why. A thought came to him,had Jim been acting so angsty recently because he was afraid of this?
He sighed, then turned to face Jim,who lifted his head and let go of his sweater vest. The dim porch light let him see his friend's face, his complexion was pale and his eyes were glassy. Toby thought Jim looked at him like a kicked puppy would,it made his chest feel stuffy.
âJim,is this why youâve been acting so weird since I picked up the amulet?â
Jim didnât reply, just shifted his gaze away slightly.
Toby pursed his lips with thoughtfulness and then showed a gentle smile, âJimbo,I canât promise that I wonât die doing this. Itâs a lie to say Iâm not scared tooâŚI mean come on Jim, look at us. Iâm happy youâve stuck with me through all this craziness, that way I know I havenât lost my mind. I can only promise you that Iâll do my best not to die, as long as you promise to do the same. Oh and you need to tell me whatâs going on with you,you used to tell me everything on your mind. Weâre best buds after all, always have been and always will be, okay?â
He gave a light punch at Jimâs arm, realizing even more tears were silently streaming down his friend's face,he panicked.
âWhoa! Uh,come on Jimbo, don't cry!â
Jim sniffed and wiped his face with his sleeve and then showed a smile even though his eyes were still red.
âI promise.â His voice was hoarser now, âSorry I havenât been myself lately, thereâs so much I've wanted to tell you but I just didnât want to overwhelm you.â
Toby grinned, âyou can tell me slowly if it helps, doesnât have to be everything at once.â He crossed his arms, âI was starting to think you were in love with me because of how clingy youâve gotten recently. Glad Iâm not crazy,Iâm not sure what goes on a wedding registry these days.â He shrugged, happy to see Jim chuckle at his teasing, the atmosphere feeling less heavy.
After unlocking the door the two went inside,Toby saw two teacups and a tray of cookies on the table; weirdly though he didnât see Nana anywhere in the kitchen.
âNana?â He called out while Jim had gone over to the table, touching the cup of tea,it was still warm. Toby on the other hand had found his Nana dead asleep on the couch. Suddenly, all the lights in the house went out,
âA power outage?â Toby groaned, but a chill ran down both their spines. This was amplified further when sounds like claws hitting wood flooring could be heard, then followed by eerie whistling.
Both teenagers' blood ran cold,Toby felt fear at something unknown inside his house; but Jim knew what this was. The clicking footsteps scraped down the uncarpetted stairs, the whistling getting closer.
âTobes,â Jim hissed in a hushed voice, even though he was pointless with a troll's hearing, âsummon the armor.â
This was bad timing,Toby was already exhausted from his fight with Draal, sore and injured even though he tried to hide how much bruised ribs hurt.
âAw whatâs wrong Trollhunter? You donât like my home welcoming? Your grandmother was quite hospitable.â
Nomura spoke from halfway up the stairs, her glowing green eyes pinned on Toby, the sarcastic lilt in her raspy voice only made it creepier. Her two scythes glowed by her sides, both sides stared at one another in a standoff. The first movement would trigger the fight, Toby startled when one of the cats brushed against his leg. His momentary distraction was the opportunity Nomura took to pounce. She leapt over the railing and swung her scythe down with cruel excitement.
Toby yelped, grabbing a lamp to block it,it was sliced in half easily by Nomura as she continued to press her attack. She whipped her leg out, kicking Toby in the side. He crashed into his Nana's baskets of yarn, sending colorful threads scattering.
Nomura laughed, raising her blade once more,
âGive me the amulet, and maybe Iâll consider sparing your-â
She couldnât finish her words,Jim let out a beastly roar while landing a kick that threw her to the wall.
âYou again!â She sneered, shifting on her hooves. Jim stared at her intensely, she was a skilled fighter, her techniques were meant for assassins. This made her a difficult foe for someone wielding a longsword in close combat, she took advantage of bigger opponents using speed and swift strikes; he would know, she taught him after all. So he summoned a weapon he was versed in too, the pair of hooked thigh daggers, made of black metal with glowing red and indigo runes engraved.
The burst of magic illuminated the room briefly, Nomura watched the Trollhunters companion with peaked curiosity. Jim lowered his stance, his pair of glowing blue eyes flicked back at Toby who pulled himself off the floor.
Toby was astounded when he met Jimâs eyes; they were unfamiliar and inhuman, those glowing cat-like eyes piercing the dark. Not to mention the âmagicâ Jim had just done. He didnât dare linger though, deciding to dwell on it when he wasnât about to get killed. He bolted off to the side, running up the stairs to his room to lock himself inside.
Nomura tried to run past Jim to catch Toby but was blocked by him, she jumped back after their confrontation. Observing him, then he spoke,
âShall we?â He said with a slight playfulness as both charged in for another confrontation, the two fought intensely. Striking at any openings with the swiftness of snakes, but pulling back to keep distance after each bout. Jim hadnât noticed the grin that formed on his face while fighting,he had bumped into the radio nearby after being pushed back with force. The classical radio happened to be on, Danse Macabre was playing, ironic to the current battle atmosphere..
They clashed once more, exchanging blows and dodging,Nomura kicked a coffee table in his direction but it was sliced through easily. She used the opportunity to slash at him, cutting open a gash on his chest; shockingly the wound closed up almost immediately, scabbing over with inhuman speed. Jim pressed Nomura, going so far as pushing her outside the house into the backyard. They stood under the moon's dim lighting and the flickering street lamps.
âEnough!â It had been bugging her the whole fight, why did this skinny flesh bag almost mirror her fighting style? Nomura howled, her chest heaving from their battle, fiercely gazing at him and demanding. âWhat in the world are you? A wizard? You donât have the stink of a normal flesh bag.â
Jim gave her a cocky smile, putting weight on one hip and wiggling his dagger.
âI dunno, youâd have to ask the Mountain King.â
He shrugged, seeing her face twisting with annoyance and confusion, she wanted to ask what he meant but didnât get the chance. She was sent flying by a large rolling blue troll that came crashing from the woods.
Draal snorted, âNomuraâ
The changeling and troll exchanged several blows, tension strong between them, but the changeling eventually fled the backyard. This only left Draal and Jim,who had already let the daggers in his hands vanish. He saw the battle was over and let out a heavy sigh, they needed to clean up the house. Not to mention probably explain a little to Toby. Draal had been staring at him, those fiery orange eyes looked at him warily.
âYou are the skinny fleshbag that hangs around the Trollhunter.â
Jim could tell what he wanted to ask,he looked down at his hands, only nine fingers,he touched his face. Even if he couldnât really tell,he was sure that something about his current appearance sold him out as inhuman right now.
âItâs a long storyâŚugh. Mind helping me clean up Tobe's house?â
