So I had a calm thinking moment and one thing I started wondering is.. In the muggleworld we can threaten people by sending bullets in the mail. Can somebody enlighten me on what the same kind of thing in the magic world is? Cause you can't put a spell in an envelope xD At least not like a threat?
Oooooh I bet there are, I can’t think of what they would be, but we have ample evidence from the series to make a healthy assumption it’s a cultural phenomenon (excuse me if I sound pretentious, I’m not trying to be I’m actually an anthropologist that specializes in archaeology that specializes is biochem and material source analysis >long story short I basically study people for a living).
So we know wizards order hits on people right? That’s not very different from muggle mob culture, gang culture, or any kind of underground or otherwise shady organization. Off the top of my head I can think of two counts where “hits” were either threatened or happened; both assigning Fenrir Greyback as the eager muscle. He actually hurt Remus Lupin as a child for his father insulting death eaters/not joining them, and Draco threatened Borgin as Greyback was a “friend of the family.” This is extremely mob-esqu, and certainly created a situation in which we clearly understand there are social hierarchies within the wizarding world that lend themselves to blackmail, threats and coercion.
Next, we know that magic folk are very much like muggles where it comes to cultural adaptations; they have unfounded and founded superstitions, mythologies, traditions, and symbolism. We see this with how they regard things such as The Grim, Thestrals, and Parslmouths.
As far as symbols that have functioned in sending messages in the series, we have the more obvious Dark Mark. We know that it was left it means something; that Death Eaters came, saw, and conquered. It means you belong to the Death Eaters, it means that where ever it was placed the Dark Lord was triumphant. We also know that the Deathly Hallows symbol means more than one thing to more than one group, ei. “Seekers of the Hallows” or “Wizard Nazis”. Based on this, we know that magic folk have the capacity to understand and accept symbolic statements, on levels from having it basically written out as a clear message to the ability to interpret abstract or even poetic concepts.
Lastly, we know from The Goblet of Fire that sending unpleasant things through the mail is definitely a practice -Hermione was sent several nasty letters and sustained very painful injuries from undiluted bubortuber pus. If I recall correctly, some of the letters actually did contain hexes after she had someone look at them.
So with all of this information combined, I think we can safely say this is definitely a thing. Having listed this out, I’m pretty sure sending certain people something like an image of crossed wands could openly be inviting a duel. Or sending someone a broken wand sounds really ominous, given that a wand is a witch or wizards main tool of use, and they almost bond with it over time. I’m pretty sure if someone sent Professor Trelawny a lock of thestral mane she would lose it, and if someone sent Professor McGonagall some kind of rune like, eh, “Hagal”, rune of the Hailstorm and struggles she’d prepare for some nonsense.
Imagine throwing a horseshoe at a centaur, or giving a pure blood a light switch fixture -it could be interpreted as if you’d destroy them as a magical being and render them to a muggle like existence or a slight on their blood status.
Oooooh. Imagine sending a Slytherin a dead snake. Shit would get real idc who sent it, that would not go down well.
Yeah this is a fantastic concept, I’m glad you brought it up.
If one of you guys wanted to send a threat through the mail to a fellow witch or wizard, how would you do it?
the oat, sometimes called the common oat, Avena Fructus, Avena byzantina, Avena orientalis, Avena volgensis, Avenae Herba, Avenae Stramentum, Avoine, Green Oat, Green Oat Grass, Groats
“ is a species of cereal grain grown for its seed, which is known by the same name (usually in the plural, unlike other cereals and pseudocereals). While oats are suitable for human consumption as oatmeal and rolled oats, one of the most common uses is as livestock feed.
Oats have numerous uses in foods; most commonly, they are rolled or crushed into oatmeal, or ground into fine oat flour. Oatmeal is chiefly eaten as porridge, but may also be used in a variety of baked goods, such as oatcakes, oatmeal cookies and oat bread. Oats are also an ingredient in many cold cereals, in particular muesli and granola.
Historical attitudes towards oats have varied. Oat bread was first manufactured in Britain, where the first oat bread factory was established in 1899. In Scotland, they were, and still are, held in high esteem, as a mainstay of the national diet.
In Scotland, a dish was made by soaking the husks from oats for a week, so the fine, floury part of the meal remained as sediment to be strained off, boiled and eaten. Oats are also widely used there as a thickener in soups, as barley or rice might be used in other countries.
Oats are also commonly used as feed for horses when extra carbohydrates and the subsequent boost in energy are required. The oat hull may be crushed (“rolled” or “crimped”) for the horse to more easily digest the grain, or may be fed whole.
Oats are generally considered healthy due to their rich content of several essential nutrients (table). In a 100 gram serving, oats provide 389 calories and are an excellent source (20% or more of the Daily Value, DV) of protein (34% DV), dietary fiber (44% DV), several B vitamins and numerous dietary minerals, especially manganese (233% DV) (table). Oats are 66% carbohydrates, including 11% dietary fiber and 4% beta-glucans, 7% fat and 17% protein (table).”
Note of caution : Do not eat when you have Celiac disease.
Antioxidant (excerpt from research:” The antioxidant capacity of the oat fractions was generally consistent with a potency rank of pearlings (2.89-8.58 TE/g) > flour (1.00-3.54 TE/g) > trichome (1.74 TE/g) = bran (1.02-1.62 TE/g) “) *see research link 10606549, 10606548
Reduces craving for cigarettes , inhibits the working of nicotine (Excerpt: Effect of Avena sativa on Cigarette Smoking C. L. ANAND 47 Clarendon Street, Glasgow NW IN 1967, in India, I came across a practitioner of ancient Ayurvedic medicine who successfully used a decoction of common oats (Avena sativa) to cure the opium habit.
