I’m writing to you to say “Welcome to the world” the world that is now yours for the taking. I wish I could tell you that it’s going to be beyond perfect but it isn’t but trust me, it’s getting a lot better than it was ten years ago. You’ll come out into the world with open arms if you are a boy or a girl, either one is equal as long as you are healthy but even if you aren’t, I’ll deal with it.

You will be a tiny bundle of joy who has a cheery smile because they are excited to exist in this world, excited to be an actual person! I’ll be busy with work but I’ll make sure I always make time for you and if you end up being into books, musicals, foreign music, nature, napping or anything your mind can think of then I’ll make sure we make time for it. I’ll help you figure out what you like and I’ll buy you your first instrument even though we both know that you are probably going to strum it once and never use it again.

I’ll walk you to your first day of school and try to ease you even though you might think the world is going to end by going in and being alone for the first time but the truth is, I’ll be there to pick you up in a few hours. You don’t have to worry about your homework that might seem like the end of the world because I’ll happily sit down with you and make sure we get it done. I’ll make sure we get whatever challenge done together, don’t panic or worry.

It’s going to be okay, I promise you that. I’ll bring you to your first class party and you’ll kick and cry because you most certainly don’t want to go in but I’ll promise that if you still don’t like it then I’ll come and collect you and we can go home. Of course you enjoyed the party and I’ll sit in the living room listening to your ramble about all the music you enjoyed even though we obviously don’t have the same taste. I’ll give you all my attention so you feel like no matter what you tell me, its worth something. Whatever you tell me about, you deserve to be listened to.

The thing is that no matter what happens with you, I’m not going to just simply give up. You can come out as straight, gay, lesbian and transgender and I will most certainly respect you for it. I’m not going to judge whoever you bring home to meet me even if I don’t exactly like them because the truth is if they make you laugh, I can’t disagree. Life isn’t going to be a walk in the park and you are going to deal with everything that will hit you like a speeding car.

I hope that you won’t shy away from it and decided not to come to me even if you’re embarrassed about the whole thing because if you feel like your world is crumbling and no matter what you do, it falls apart then I’ll happily sit up with you all night and talk to you and see what our next course of action is. I’m not going to shake my head and call you an ‘attention seeker’ or blame it on your ‘teenage years’ because why would I? I know I’m going to be an absolute pain in your ass and constantly check up on you when you go over to your friends or attend a party but it’s just because I care about you.

Over my eighteen years on this earth, I’m going to tell you something to get you through all the shit that’s going to happen with backstabbing friends who will mutter about you behind your back but not to your face, being put down by a teacher, being made feel worthless by people or even yourself. I’m going to remind you of something that YOU are not worthless no matter what you are made think of yourself, you are worth something and are most definitely worth something to me.
