Surprise Me More
Summary: Dean surprises Arthur with a kiss. [Ao3] [Wc 852]
Warnigns: kissing, cuddling, soft dean
The first thing Dean noticed was the silence. Which, coming from a place currently occupied by Arthur Ketch, was deeply suspicious. No smug remarks. No clink of expensive whiskey. No annoyingly perfect British commentary about Deanâs life choices. Just⌠quiet.
Dean leaned in the doorway of the bunkerâs library, arms crossed. âAlright, whatâd you break?â
Ketch didnât look up immediately. He was seated at the table, sleeves rolled just enough to be distracting, carefully stitching up a tear in his coat like it personally offended him.
âI havenât broken anything,â he replied calmly. âA rare occurrence, I admit.â
Dean snorted. âYeah, Iâll believe that whenââ
Ketch glanced up then, sharp eyes softening just a fraction when they landed on him.ââŚhello, Dean.â
And thatâright thereâthat was new.
Dean blinked. ââŚHi?â Something warm curled low in his chest, unwanted but not unwelcome. He pushed off the doorway, sauntering in. âYouâre being weird.â
âIâm always âweird,â by your standards.â
âYeah, but this is⌠different weird.â
Ketch set the coat aside with precise care, then leaned back slightly in his chair, studying Dean like he was something worth taking his time with.
âAnd what would you prefer?â he asked. âInsults? Thinly veiled threats? A critique of your wardrobe?â
Dean smirked. âKinda miss the insults, yeah.â
âMm.â Ketchâs lips twitched. âI could oblige, if it would make you more comfortable.â
Dean stepped closer, stopping just in front of him. âNah,â he said, softer now. âThink Iâll survive.â
There was a pause. A quiet one. Not tense. Just⌠loaded.
Ketchâs gaze flicked briefly to Deanâs mouth, then back up.
âYouâre staring,â Dean pointed out.
âI am,â Ketch said, completely unbothered.
Dean huffed a laugh. âYouâre unbelievable.â
âAnd yet,â Ketch murmured, rising slowly from his chair, âyou keep coming back.â
Now they were close. Too close. Dean could smell that stupidly expensive cologne, feel the heat rolling off him, see every little shift in his expression. âYou saying Iâve got a thing for pain?â Dean asked.
âIâm saying,â Ketch replied, voice lower now, âthat you have a tendency to want things you pretend not to.â
Deanâs breath caughtâjust for a second. âYeah?â he said.
âYes.â Ketch reached out then, not rushing itânever rushing anythingâand slid his hand lightly along Deanâs arm, fingers brushing over his sleeve before settling at his wrist.
Dean didnât pull away. Didnât even think about it. âCareful,â Dean muttered. âKeep that up, I might start thinking you like me.â
Ketchâs expression softenedâreally softened, not the polished mask he wore for everyone else. âI do like you, Dean.â
Oh. Oh.
Dean swallowed, the usual sarcasm dying somewhere in his throat. âYeah, well⌠thatâs your first mistake.â
âPerhaps,â Ketch said, stepping closerâclose enough their chests nearly touched. âBut not one I regret.â
Dean exhaled slowly. ââŚYouâre killing me, man.â
âNot my intention,â Ketch murmured.
âCouldâve fooled me.â
Their eyes met againâand this time, neither of them looked away. It was Dean who closed the distance between them. It wasn't a soft kiss by any means at first.
It was sharp, a little desperate, like something that had been building for far too long. Deanâs hand fisted in Ketchâs shirt, pulling him in, while Ketch made a quiet, surprised sound before immediately melting into it.
And then then it shifted. Slowed.
Ketchâs hand slid up to Deanâs jaw, thumb brushing along his cheek as he tilted into the kiss, gentler now. Intentional. Like he was savoring it.
Dean huffed a breath against his lips, easing into it, letting it be⌠soft.
âYeah,â Dean murmured when they pulled back just enough to breathe. âThatâs⌠better.â
Ketchâs forehead rested briefly against his. âYouâre quite different like this,â he said quietly.
âYeah?â Dean smirked faintly. âDonât get used to it.â
âI rather think I will.â
Dean rolled his eyesâbut didnât move away. Didnât let go. Instead, he nudged Ketch backward slightly until the back of his legs hit the table, then leaned into him, arms sliding around his waist.
Ketch blinked, clearly not expecting that. âDeanâŚâ
âShut up,â Dean muttered, burying his face briefly against Ketchâs shoulder. âJustâshut up a second.â
There was a pause. Then Ketchâs arms came around him. Careful at first. Then tighter. Secure. ââŚvery well,â Ketch murmured, voice softer than Dean had ever heard it.
Dean exhaled, tension he didnât even realize he was holding finally slipping out of him. âDonât make a big deal outta this,â he grumbled.
âOf course not.â A beat. ââŚthough I will remember it.â
Dean huffed quietly. âYeah. Figured.â
Another moment passedâand then Ketch pressed a small, almost hesitant kiss to Deanâs temple.
Dean froze. ââŚyou just kiss my head?â
âYes.â
ââŚwow.â
âIs that a problem?â
Dean pulled back just enough to look at him, something warm and fond creeping into his expression.
âNah,â he said. âJust didnât peg you for the cuddling type.â
Ketchâs lips curved faintly. âThere are many things you havenât âpeggedâ me for.â
Dean barked out a laugh. âAlright, easy, British.â
But he leaned back in anyway. And this time, Ketch didnât hesitate to hold him.
