A Royal Pain in the Ass
Or, how Deadman meets the Ghost King
-
Boston Brand, against his better judgement, came to the House of Mystery when John Constantine called.
“Ghost Business” he said, unhelpfully, when Boston asked. And Boston, nobly, and stupidly, found himself in John’s parlor not long later.
John sits him down at a card table (well John sits, he floats) and begins explaining. John seems in good spirits, which is unsettling enough that Boston chooses not to comment on it. He’s only half listening to John’s preamble when a boy who looks like he just woke up shuffles by the parlor door.
No— not a boy— oh shit, he’s—
“Your Majesty!” Boston floats back, startled stiff. He blinks in disbelief. That aura is nonsensical as it is unmistakable— that boy, the rumpled teenager in John’s hallway, is the High King of Ghosts.
The king looks up at Boston and blinks, slowly. “Hmm?”
Deadman freezes. Even though the king appears to have the form of a teenage boy in mismatched pajamas, his presence saturates the room with power. Boston feels the pull of it, tugging at him like gravity. He has to actively keep himself steady above his chair.
“Oi Danny, bring us a tea, would you?” John snaps in the kid’s general direction. Deadman stifles a whimper, and thanks his lucky stars that the king didn’t vaporize John on the spot. Instead, the boy tilts his head in a lazy nod and shuffles off toward the kitchen.
Deadman might dissolve into a ball of pure nerves. John couldn’t be so witless to not know the Ghost King was under his roof. Unless— it’s possible the king was purposefully hiding. Powerful things tended to be good at disguising themselves when they wanted to. That seems more likely than the alternative— that John knowingly addressed the king like he had an active death wish.
Boston bites his tongue. Was that little outburst enough to reveal the king’s hidden identity? He doesn’t want to imagine what the king might do if he blew his cover.
“Something the matter, Boston?” John smirks, “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
oh sam, you have no idea how long i've been waiting to give you a hug!
Clockwork: You know it's your time to move on yes? It has been for some time now.
Deadman: I know.
Clockwork: The more time you spend here the more you will disappear.
Deadman: I know..
Clockwork: Is there a reason you stay?
Deadman: Would it be weird to say I don't even know any more?
Clockwork: No. You've lost those memories.
Deadman: Eh. I guess so. You know. I don't know why you asked me if you already knew? Know? Saw? See? I'm not sure what the word for you would be correct.
Clockwork: They could all work.
Deadman: Cool but like you know what I mean.
Clockwork: Do I?
Deadman: Ah don't fuck with me now man.
Zatanna: Boston?
Deadman: Oh hey Z!
Zatanna: Who were you talking too just now?
Deadman: Eh? An old friend— oh where did he go?
Zatanna: Boston no one else was in here but you. Constantine said you were just standing here for a second.
Deadman: Oh. Oh yeah I guess it would look like that for you guys.
Zatanna: Oh?
Deadman: No worries. We have other things to do right? We are running short on time let's go!

I was joking about Kojima doing something freaky with Heartman in Death Stranding 2 but never in my wildest imagination could I have come up with this.

Death stranding 2: the beach episode 🏖
i cannot stress enough that souls are tangible things in death stranding that is one essential half to having your heart beat and your lungs breathe and that deadman, at the beginning of death stranding one, does not have one, but he does at the end
and the thing that turned him into a zombie that is reanimated instead of a zombie that is undead is allowing himself to love sam and lou
"as it turns out, i have a beach" -> secret code for "your living love warmed my dead body enough for it to recieve one of being alive's inherent rights which i had been incapable of receiving until then"
This whole thing with Deadman giving Nightwing a coin that lets him see dead people has so many fun implications for dpxdc stories. Like, Danny invisibly haunting the batfam and pulling pranks, while Nightwing just stares at him like a cat staring down the invisible eldritch horror in the corner of the room that no one else can see.
For context, Nightwing has an obol coin which was used to pay Charon to cross the river styx. It gives him the ability to see and hear Deadman, and other dead entities. Including the "chatter of broken things" and “plaintive little cries of mass-produced stuff more easily trashed than fixed.” Aka Nightwing can hear inanimate objects. Aka Nightwing is probably being haunted by fast fashion and disposable packaging.
Man I really want him to meet Box Ghost so they can commiserate about the lack of respect paid to disposable products.
