well, that's life.

"Stop." Anakin says. His voice is no longer panickedâsuddenly it's clear as a bell, ringing with resolve. "Take me instead."
"What? Anakin, noâ"
"If you take her, I'll stop at nothing." He's not threatening them; just stating as if he's reading from a GAR report. "I'll burn this ship to the ground and you with it."
"Step forward and she dies, Jedi," the slaver spits, finger hovering over the explosive.
"Then we'll all die." Anakin says, undeterred andâhe's bluffing, right? He has to be. "And no one will walk away happy. But if you take me and let her go safely, I won't fight. I won't resist. You can do whatever you'd like to me." He grins, sharply. "I'm the better investment."
"He's bluffing," Another one of them says, not sounding convinced. "Besides, the girl will be easier to train." To break.
Anakin laughs with a bitter edge and pulls down his collar. There's a faint scar on his neck; a thin, small line she'd always thought was the result of some stray shrapnel. "I'm already trained."
She can feel the slavers' sudden sick pleasure. It's disgusting.
"Aren't the freed ones always more trouble then they're worth?" mutters a slaver in the back.Â
"No," Another says. "He's a Jedi, remember? They already answer to Masters."
Ahsoka can feel the blaster digging into the side of her skull ease up somewhat. The force suppressors are still locked tight around her wrists.
"Fine," says the one holding her. "We accept. Now drop the saber or we shoot."
"If you don't let her go safely, the deal is off." Anakin warns, and the room freezes with a sudden chill. The slavers seem sufficiently intimidated.
He drops the saber.
Suddenly there's a rush of movement from all sidesâ
Ahsoka finds herself shoved towards the escape podsâ
Anakin is dragged down and manhandled into force suppressant cuffsâhe doesn't resistâ
The hatch begins to closeâ
"Don't look back, Ahsoka," Anakin shouts to her as her pod slides shut and she's left alone. "Don't look back."
She's launched into the yawning abyss of space, alone save for her sabers and a pre-plotted route to the campaign they'd left behind.
The golden badge on her chest seemed heavy and she felt an instant need to pull it off. She took a deep breath and removed it with a quick and confident move. She looked at the shiny piece of metal she had in her hand. For so many years it meant everything for her. It was her point in life.
She hid it in the drawer under some papers just to not look at it. It reminded her of guilt and shame she was feeling. She sat down on the bed with tears in her eyes. It was wrong, it was all wrong! She should be the one whose bending was taken away. Those soldiers were abducted by equalists and there was no way they could make it out alive.
She jumped when someone opened the door of her apartment.
âKya?â she frowned and wiped the tears that were dripping down her cheeks. âWhat are you doing here? I told you Iâm fine and none of you need to worry about me.â
âYeah, youâre fine, I know. And puffy eyes are just an allergic reaction to my stupidity or something,â Kya pretended to yawn.
A moment later her face became more serious and the way she was speaking changed. Her voice was softer, calmer and warmer. She opened her arms waiting for Lin, who acted like she didnât actually care.
Lin finally shrugged and let Kya embrace her tightly.
âYouâre not okay, are you?â she asked but didnât want to get a response. She knew the truth. âTenzin told me everything that happened yesterday. Lin, it wasnât your fault, you did everything you could.â
âBut it wasnât enough to save them.â
She trembled with emotions between Kyaâs arms. She calmed down but only a little. Kya always could give her the feeling of safety.
âHow will I look them in the eyes after all? Kya they trusted me and I⌠IâŚâ
She sobbed, she didnât even try to keep calm. It was too much even for her.
âIâll stay there for a night, I donât want you to be alone, especially like this. Iâve heard that they hurt you, is it true?â
Lin didnât answer, so Kya took that as a âyesâ.
âI know itâs hard but you will need to get over the past, do you hear me? You canât look back, because it's easy to get lost in memories like these. Donât look back, Lin.â
âYou donât understand, Kya,â Lin looked up at the waterbender.
âI do, Lin. Trust me.â
She held her tighter, she felt Kyaâs scent, so soothing at the time.
âDonât look back, Lin. Donât let the past get you.â
Lin nodded but Kya knew that this small gesture was just to make her feel better. At least she was safe, Kya thought and kissed her slightly on the forehead.
âNow let me heal this wound of yours,â Kya smoothly changed the topic to distract her a little.

Summary: Anakin, Ahsoka, and Obi-Wan lead their men in a battle on Abrion Major. In his arrogance, Anakin breaks the Jedi Code.
READ ON AO3
The 501st and 212th had been deployed to Abrion Major of the Abrion sector to try and win back the planet. It was at a confluence of a few major hyperspace lanes, and not to mention had been a big supplier of the Republicâs foodstuffs. Other planets in the sector were also seeing GAR occupation. The whole sector had decided to side with the Separatists, and they desperately needed to win back the area. Politics were getting nowhere since they werenât allowed to talk with the senators whoâd changed sides so suddenly. So battle it was.
Anakin, and Ahsoka were leading Captain Rex and the men through a field filled with rotting vegetables, the sickly sweet smell heavy in the air. The war had interrupted the harvest, and most of the fruits and vegetables had begun to decay. They headed north, keeping low to the ground to hide their presence, and going as quietly as possible. Obi-Wan and Cody were in another field, heading east and then north. The plan was to attack the droid army from both sides and squeeze them till they popped.
This army was only one part of it. Up the slope twenty klicks away was a tower where the brigadier general, Nej Vane, was overseeing his troops.
âAll right, everyone get into position,â Anakin said. âRex, youâre with me.â
The droid army was directly to the east now, and they quickly and quietly lined up in the dry stalks to meet them.
Anakin keyed Obi-Wanâs code into his comm, and asked, âObi-Wan, are you in position yet?â
âNot quite. Hold.â
Anakin started grumbling, but Ahsoka nudged him. âHey, weâve had to wait around to fight before. And donât worry, Iâm sure youâll destroy plenty of droids.â
âIâm just nervous. What if Obi-Wanâs discovered?â
Rex let out a quiet laugh. âWith all due respect, sir, this is General Kenobi weâre talking about. Heâll get the job done.â
Anakin, Ahsoka, Rex, and the troops stayed crouched there for nearly an hour, watching the droids mill about, getting their tanks ready, and setting up cannons.
Kriff, this was taking too long.
Just as Anakin was thinking of leading the charge, with or without Obi-Wan, his comlink beeped. He answered, âGo ahead.â
âAnakin, weâre in position,â Obi-Wan said. âProceed with the attack.â
âYou ready for this, Master?â
âYou know meâŚâ
âCheck your blasters,â Anakin said to the men. âOn my signal.â
The 501st did as he said, and when he waved his hand forward they charged out of the weeds and grasses, and fell upon the droid army.
Anakin and Ahsoka ran ahead, defending troopers from blasts, cutting down droids. Two tanks were approaching, and Anakin signaled for Ahsoka to get the one on the right.
A blast went off as Anakin ran, and it was so near that it threw him through the air. Stunned, trying to get his breath back, ears ringing, he staggered to his feet. There wasnât time to see if any troopers were injured or fallen. Medics would get to those who needed it when they could.
He ran towards the tank, sensed another blast coming and, using the Force, leapt high into the air, avoiding it. His forward momentum had him land on the tank. In a few quick motions he severed the barrel and destroyed the droids manning it. A glance farther down the field showed that Ahsoka was just finishing doing the same.
Anakin jumped from the tank, landing on a B2 battle droid and knocking it to the ground. He used the momentum to flip and land in a heavily manned ring of droids. Without much thought he set to destroying them, flowing through the lightsaber forms he knew so well.
The battle went on, the droids thinning.
The difficult part was that the droids didnât retreat. A regular army tended to retreat after twenty percent of casualties, but the droids had no concept of what casualties meant on a bigger scale, and had no concept of retreat (save for the occasional cowardly B1s).
The 501st thankfully didnât take heavy losses, and eventually, across the scarred and burning ground littered with droid parts and fallen troopers, Anakin met up with Obi-Wan.
âThat wasnât so bad,â Anakin said.
âDonât be arrogant,â Obi-Wan chided. âThereâs still the brigadier general to deal with. And oh, lovely, heâs noticed we destroyed his army.â
Sensing something, but not sure what, Anakin looked up, and saw vulture droids heading their way from the direction of the tower.
âTake cover!â Obi-Wan cried.
Ahsoka repeated the order, âEveryone take cover!â She grabbed Rex and they were rushing to a fallen tank to hide behind it.
Anakin didnât bother taking cover, even as Obi-Wan and Commander Cody dodged aside. He met the vulture droids head on.
âMaster, what are you doing!â Ahsoka cried.
âDonât worry, Snips. Iâll be fine.â
Anakin dodged blasts from vulture droids, leapt, flipped, and landed on one. The wind whipped at his hair and clothes and tried to make him lose his footing. But he felled the vulture droid, and then went on to the next one.
And the next, and the next.
âPush forward!â Anakin cried, motioning for the 501st to follow him.
âAnakin, no!â Obi-Wan cried.
A blast came from a previously hidden gun turret at the base of the tower and it hit near Anakin. He went flying, the air pushed out of him. When he landed his ears were ringing, and everything hurt. Commander Cody and his men were firing back at droids guarding the turret, and Obi-Wan grabbed Anakinâs arms, dragging him out of range.
The world turned black, and he knew no more.
---
Anakin came to a few minutes later, sheltered by an overturned tank. There was something stabbing him and he wanted to scream, but Obi-Wan and Ahsoka held him down. His tunics and tabard and belt had been taken off and Kix had cut into his side. There was a thin tube going up into his body.
Anakin thrashed, sickened, agonized, but he could barely breathe. The tube punctured something, and then he was breathing again, pressure he hadnât realized was there leaving his chest.
Kix pulled the tube out after a few minutes, and then set to cauterizing the wound.
Anakin lay there groaning. Ahsoka put her robe over him.
âI did tell you to check your arrogance,â Obi-Wan said.
Anakin glared at him, anger pricking like red hot needles in him.
He tried to rise, but Ahsoka and Kix pushed him back down.
âWhatâs the status?â Anakin asked.
âI sent Cody and a small team of men to sneak around the ridge and take out the cannon. Then weâll take the tower.â
âWe,â Anakin noted. âSo Iâm still in this.â
âSir,â Kix began, taking his helmet off, âyou should really rest, wait for evac. Youâre in no conditionââ
Anakin flung Ahsokaâs robe off of himself and then rose, grabbing his clothes to dress himself. Each movement hurt, his whole body aching. His head throbbed.
âIâm fine,â Anakin said.
There was an explosion to the north, the fire visible from where they were, and Anakin smiled despite the pain he was in. âGuess Cody took out the cannon.â
âCody, come in,â Obi-Wan said into his comlink. âCody, are you all right?â
There was static, and then Cody answered, âWeâre all right, general. The cannonâs been eliminated. Want to come join the party?â
âLove to.â And then to the group of men around them, and Anakin and Ahsoka, Obi-Wan said, âAll right, letâs move out.â
They made for the tower.
Many times Ahsoka glanced at Anakin, even asked him if he was all right. His breathing was labored.
In an hourâs time they had arrived at the tower.
They battled the droids there, and found their way to the control room that had a view of the valley and fields below.
More droids were in the room, and they were quickly dealt with.
Brigadier General Nej Vane, a human male, fired at Anakin, blaster in hand. Anakin deflected every shot, and then grabbed the blaster with the Force. He flung it out the window, and smirked at him.
Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, and Anakin kept their lightsabers leveled, Rex and Cody guarding the room with a group of their men.
âCare to surrender?â Obi-Wan asked. âWeâve destroyed your army. Thereâs no one left.â
âOh, really?â
Before any of them could do anything, Nej Vane pressed a button his comlink, and soon they heard the roar of ships in the air.
âHeâs called for reinforcements,â Ahsoka cried.
Bombs fell, the tower itself shaking as fire burst outside.
âWhat are you doing!â Obi-Wan asked Nej.
âIâm not supposed to let the Republic have this planet. And you wonât.â
Quick as lightning, anger turning his vision red at the troops that could be dying outside, Anakin went forward, and slashed through Nej Vaneâs wrist comm. He also happened to slash through his wrist, his severed hand flopping to the floor. The man was screaming, screamingâŚ
And Anakin had had enough of it.
He raised his lightsaber.
âAnakin!â Obi-Wan warned.
Anakin brought the blade down, slashing through his head.
Nej Vane fell dead.
Ahsoka, and Obi-Wan deactivated their blades, but Anakin still stood there with his out, breathing heavy.
âAnakin, we need to call for evac,â Obi-Wan said. âAnakin!â
Anakin deactivated his lightsaber and clipped it on his belt. His voice was low with anger as he said, âNo, Iâm destroying those bombers.â
Obi-Wan grabbed him. âDonât be stupid. Youâre injured. This fight is done. We have to retreat.â
âFine, letâs show the Separatists how weak we are then!â Anakin shouted.
âMaster?â Ahsoka questioned. âThis isnât like you.â
Anakin shook his head, trying to shake himself out of it. Then the realization of what heâd done hit him and he nearly collapsed. Heâd killed an unarmed man, and he was letting his anger fuel him.
âYouâre right. I⌠I shouldnât have done that.â Suddenly fearful he glanced at Obi-Wan. âWhat are you going to tell the Council?â
Obi-Wanâs look was hard, even if there was a modicum of love in his eyes. âThe truth,â he said.
Anakin swallowed roughly.
Heâd broken the code, perhaps in a more fundamental way than not forming attachments. Heâd committed a dark act.
Trying for humility, Anakin bowed his head, saying, âIâll face whatever comes from my mistakes.â
âGood.â
Ahsoka gripped his shoulder reassuringly, even if she seemed a bit hesitant at first.
Though Anakin was trying for humility, he didnât see the reason for him to be punished. Nej Vane had been a threat, and heâd eliminated him, even if heâd done so in anger. That anger had made him stronger.
Obi-Wan took the lead for the retreat, Admiral Yularen sending reinforcements down to the planet.
Overall, theyâd lost eighteen percent of their men, and still, the outer rim sieges would continue.
Anakin knew he should feel sick inside about what heâd done, feel remorse, or guilt, but rather, he felt sick that he hadnât battled all those bombers, that he wasnât out there right now, even with pain wracking his body, destroying whole armies, ending the war.
He could do it. He knew he could, but the Council was holding him back.
Not for the first time, Anakin wished he was on the Council, that he was the one making the decisions. The war would end by his hand. Surely it would.
So arrogant was he that he pushed himself till he collapsed at the base, and heâd had to be carried to his bunk. Anakin slept, and he dreamt of vengeance, of victory.

Warden x Alistair
Warden x Nathaniel Howe
Ferria remembers how innocent and goofily sweet she and Alistair were in the early days of getting together. She wishes she were back there now, instead of attempting to ignore the way the Warden's newest archer makes her feel...
A bit of a Warden/Alistair and Warden/Nathaniel side by side, for the temptation and triangle angst. Alistair might be a pure heart and the love of Ferria's life, but being around Nathaniel whilst Alistair is away is getting complicated.

=======================
âIt really hurts,â Alistair pouted. âI think my bruises have bruises.â The Grey Warden was sat on a slightly scorched rock, making a great show of looking extremely sorry for himself. In truth, it had been an invigorating morning - decapitated darkspawn lay strewn about them in every direction, the grass singed and smoking slightly in some places, ice clinging to it in others. His face and armour were splattered with blood, as they often were, but the ratio of âicky blackâ to ânormal redâ was swinging heavily in the black stuffâs favour: Alistair was no doctor, but he took that to mean that the darkspawn were dead, and they were alive.
Ferria rolled her eyes lovingly, moving her hand over him slowly, a few inches away, a soft yellowish-green glow emanating from it as she stitched his wounds back together.
âThose bruises will have bruises if you donât hold still,â she scolded lightly, the weight of her instructions hampered somewhat by the smirk stretched across her face. They had a field kit open beside them, as well as a couple of potion bottles to hand, but in the end, he was in far better condition than sheâd feared. That Hurlock had sent him flying, but it looked like he was going to need a smithy more urgently than a doctor.
Still. Any little boost she could give him. It never hurt to be attentive.
Zevran shook his head as he watched the pair, sliding a knife into his boot and smoothing his hair back into place. âThese smiles you earn, Alistair,â he tutted, accent lilting as always: âYou should treasure them well. Your words - they are not amusing enough to win them.â
Alistair gasped in pantomime horror, shooting the Crow a betrayed look over Ferriaâs shoulder. â Ow-ie. Why would you attack a man when heâs down? Thatâs not very Expert Assassin-y.â
âOn the contrary, it is extremely âexpert assassin-yâ.â Even though Zevran spoke the Trade Tongue with the slight pause of a man coming to it as a second language, his derision for Alistairâs turn of phrase was clear. He smirked, strolling away from the pair with a slight sway and floating step that implied his point had been made for him. âCome, Fang. You are the only one here who thinks sense - let us have some real conversation, no?â The mabari barked, following gladly. Heâd had enough of this as well.
The pair wandered some space away, giving the two Wardens room for their painful attempt at courtship. Alistair smirked at Ferria shyly; âI donât think he likes me very much today.â
The mage âtskâed and gasped, her turn at pantomime theatrics; â No! Surely not. Whyever wouldnât he?â She giggled, moving her spell up to Alistairâs face: her hand was close to his cheek, his jaw - close, but not quite close enough to excuse brushing against them. Shame. She could feel a tingle in her fingers that had nothing to do with her spell as they hovered so near to his tanned skin.
She wasnât sure how long it had been since her ridiculous escort-turned-partner in saving the world had become something more to her. And yet, as the light of her healing moved over him, bringing out the rich conker red in his hair and the smiling warmth in his eyes, she felt herself tie into tipsy little knots that she hadnât expected to feel again for some time. She felt shy to talk to him despite their friendship, yet wanted nothing but to look at his face and babble on together until the Blight ended itself.
She watched a cut on his head stitch itself closed beneath her spell, extremely aware of the quiet that was suddenly between them. It felt as though she couldnât quite breathe properly, and yet she was in no hurry to.
Alistair was watching her just as closely as she suspected she was watching him. His expression was difficult to read, but she liked seeing it on him.
âAm I going to live, doctorâŚ?â
The Warden bit her bottom lip and smirked. âI think you just might. At least until you talk to Zev again.â
-
âWarden-Commander? ⌠Ferria? â
The voice, coarse yet well-spoken and always a slight whisper, tore Ferria from her memories and back to the man before her. The Blackmarsh was a muggy, oppressive heat around them, Oghren and Anders loitering some distance away and, from the sounds of things, cracking jokes over a suggestive-looking log.
Warden-Commander Surana looked back to her best archer, wincing apologetically, as though sheâd just done him some wrong, before reminding herself that she couldnât be disloyal to Nathaniel by thinking about Alistair . This⌠Whatever it was between them was becoming even more muddled than sheâd realised.
Nathaniel searched her face studiously, his iron-grey eyes seeming as though they could breach her silence and perceive far more than she should show. She found her own eyes becoming caught in his, despite her efforts to focus. Her breath caught, and she wished it would come back.
After some pause, the Howe ventured the new trait heâd apparently discovered since they first reached the Marsh - he smiled. The expression was oddly innocent on his face, yet wavered from lack of practice.
âAre you quite well? You fell quiet for so long, we thought you haunted." A low chuckle rolled out of him. He had been in warm spirits since they reached this unearthly place. It was making this even more difficult. "You act as though you need healing yourself?â
Ferria shook her head silently, focusing determinedly on the cut across Nathanielâs jaw and nothing else. It was a strong jaw: shapely and squared, hints of dark stubble making a good fit for the coarseness of his voice. Everything about his face was perfectly imperfect; it had a maturity and edge to it, a strength that felt grounding in an ever darker, ever more complicated world -
Enough. There. Done.
She ended her spell, withdrawing her hand before it lingered too long in the aura around this man. Whenever they lingered, the air between them felt similar to the moments before she gathered together a lightning storm, but that gathered pressure never went away, and neither did ever break. It must never break. She wished she did not have such clear suspicions over what would happen if it did.
The wardenâs free hand drifted to the pendant around her neck - the one that served as a reminder of her Joining, just as every Warden wore. Unknown to anyone here, however, hers contained something else, along with the darkspawn blood: a single rose petal, preserved and safe.
Nathaniel frowned in concern, his smile vanishing again. His Commander fiddled anxiously with the slim chain against her neck.  There was a grief in her, in this woman he should hate and yet could hate no longer, that he couldnât understand, but misery answered misery. She was aiding his, little by little, kindness by kindness: if she would only let him into hers - Leaning forwards, the Howe stretched a hand towards his friend, reaching for her cheek. He shifted towards her, his heat mingling with the chilled air the mage always carried around her. His scent hit her; hers, him. âFerriaâŚâ
The Warden flinched backwards, recoiling as if stung before Nathanielâs hand ever made contact. She sprung hastily to her feet, picking up her staff and whistling sharply to the rest of their party, interrupting the pairâs nudging and swapping of innuendos.
Nathaniel watched her, still crouched as he was on the ground. In part, he looked confused, yet in part, he also seemed to understand, all too well.
âLetâs move,â Ferria ordered. Involuntarily, she glanced back to him. â...We should not linger here.â

The forest around them had been turned into a fiery hell. Frank had no idea how those fire-throwing Oggers had managed to sneak up on them but he couldn't worry about that at the moment. Hazel and he ran for their lives with Percy leading the way.
Frank felt a sting of sadness as he realized that they were getting further away from his home again.
He hoped that his grandmother was okay.
âFrank do you know any shortcuts?â, Hazel yelled in desperation.
Frank concentrated and tried to think of the different forest ways he had explored as a child and which could save their lives. But nothing useful came to his mind.
âNo. This forest is pretty twisted.â, He replied guilt rising in his for not being able to tell her what she wanted to hear.
The Oggers roar came from far behind them and mixed with the explosions like a chant of death.
âMaybe you could try to call Arion? He would be a very good help!â, Percy said between shaky breaths of exhaustion.
Hazel shook her head and she looked just as guilty as Frank felt.
âI tried but he is not responding to me.â, She answered solemnly. Frank did not exactly like Arion and the fact that he was ignoring hazel was not helping.
âGreat.â He muttered sarcastically but he was ripped out of his frustration when a blast of fire exploded only centimetres on his right side.
MACK-Â (Over Loud Speaker) âWe are back at the Jury House.... OH MY!!â
ETHAN-Â âWell, well, it seems as though these two have apparently made up!â
MATAIS-Â âUh...hello Ethan, we wasnât expecting another jury member so soon.â
ETHAN-Â âYes, it seems your minds are on other types of members...â
GRANT- âSorry, so they got you out it seems. I figured you or Dennis would be next.â
ETHAN- âYes, I am out... and we need to strategize, so do you think you two can get dressed or put on a towel? As much as I enjoy this view it is really hard to focus with those things pointing at me.â
MATAIS-Â âYes... uh sure, sorryâ
ETHAN-Â âDonât apologize, trust me, you have NOTHING to apologize for, just we need to talk. Then you two can continue if you so please.â
