Some pre-ACWNR speculations. Because I’m not quite sure, what the *main* purpose of this whole operation was. I mean, getting rid of Loboff was obviously important. But apparently Erwin started spreading the rumor that he was going to recruit Levi beforehand, because Loboff knew, that it was going to happen. And Erwin had the necessary evidence before that fateful expedition, so I’m kind of sort of convinced that the whole point of recruiting Levi was... to recruit Levi.

Which leaves a lot of room for speculation as to how exactly Erwin was planning to convince (as in *convince!*) Levi to join the Survey Corps. He couldn’t know that a storm would break out. So, I’d say that he had bet his life on the slight possibility that Levi would share the wish to see what’s beyond the walls. A pretty risky gamble, if you ask me, but it paid off. I’m still somewhat baffled by how quickly Levi made Erwin’s “dream” his own. But both the anime and the manga made clear (imho) that it wasn’t about the vision per se, but more about the person, who had this vision and a strong conviction.

I still want to know what happened to Jan... 😢
