Mabel was also the one to defeat Bill in Sock Opera too. She’s the only one we’ve seen yet who’s been physically able to beat him (because Dipper beat him in the mindscape).

(And that might be telling if Dipper does give into Bill’s influence because of something happening to Mabel; once she’s okay again and physically taking on Bill, it’s going to be Dipper who’s struggling to beat him mentally. And if Bill’s plan is to merge the mindscape with reality, then it’s going to take both of the Pines’ combined efforts to beat him. But I think you’re right saying Mabel’s going to play more of the actual hero role when it comes to beating Bill).

And like!! Why else would Bill be trying to isolate Dipper from the others?? Why would he be trying so hard to get him alone and upset and push him toward the Author who is inevitably going to cause a rift between he and Mabel (possibly even a literal rift holy shit that’s ironic).

30 years ago Bill needed that portal built and he needed the Author to get trapped inside so the Author could tear it down and contain the inter-dimensional rift it created once Stanley brought him back from the other side. Whatever was on the other side changed Stanford’s entire opinion of the portal. He tore it down and is adamant on reassembling it for the universe’s safety, meaning if someone else gets trapped in another dimension at this point they’re pretty much fucked.

Bill needed Dipper to find the journals and develop an attachment to the Author and finding said Author. And now that the Author’s back, he’s pushing Dipper to trust him over Mabel even more, knowing full-well that Mabel is going to be paranoid and upset, which seems to be making her attitude toward Dipper worse.

Bill also knows that Dipper is willing to do anything for Mabel. That’s why he never asked Dipper ‘who would sacrifice everything they worked for just for their dumb sibling?’ like he asked Mabel. No he knows Dipper cares a lot about Mabel and in Sock Opera that’s what pushes Dip to make a deal with Bill–Dipper wouldn’t have done it if Bill’s observations about Mabel being inconsiderate to him were false. Dipper felt hurt and betrayed so he trusted Bill.

Bill has always been watching. He knows who the Pines are and what they’re going to do before they do it.

And the only thing that makes sense to me at this point is Mabel and Dipper growing apart and Mabel smashing that apocalyptic orb and releasing some end-time chaos and getting trapped God knows where with no way of getting back because the Author tore down the Portal and Dipper hatefully ripping away from the Author and feeling betrayed for trusting him and going back to Stanley and the others but realizing they can’t do anything to save her and the only thing powerful enough to do that is…making a deal with Bill Cipher.

And a deal with Bill is sure to lead to absolute disaster.

But it seems like it really has all been leading up to this, ya know? Dipper is Bill’s puppet, and he needs Dipper alone, upset, and vulnerable to really fuck some shit up with the kid’s help.
