Vegvary, known on here as @skull.theatre. Intriguingly entitled 'Break This Chrysalis Open and Extract My Embrionic Soul', it is a striking snapshot of long spanning conflict, filled with gothic imagery and the dirty fingerprints of religion. Sorry I've been absent; I fell down a rabbit hole of criticism on Keats. The good news is that I've returned with gifts. Her novel, 'Jane Eyre', is a gothic classic, and an important work of female writing. It is often quoted, and referenced, and marks the birth of the madwoman in the attic. On the way to becoming a novelist, however, Brontë was a poet. She had periods of great productivity: as a young teen writing a magical world of fantasy, as a young teacher displaying realism and reflection... And as a woman, in earnest, she sent a collection of her poetry to England's poet laureate, Robert Southey. Representative of his tone throughout, a portion of Southey's response is quoted above. She kept his letter, filing it “Southey’s Advice | To be kept forever.” Personally, I like to imagine that it lit a fire beneath her, rather than discouraging her... In 1846, 'Poems' was published - a collection equally representing the work of Charlotte, Emily, and Anne. The collection sold badly. She was a recluse, imprisoned by her womanhood. A ghost, haunting the homestead dressed, famously, in white. A witch, in her gardens, observing the minutiae of nature. Secluded and sensative, a witness to death. A lady of letters, imagination, distress... And, though traditionally classed as exisiting between Romanticism and Realism, the tropes of the gothic are prevalent in her poetry too. Dungeons, and death, ghosts, and goblins, melodrama and melancholy... many signifiers of the gothic, are there, bleeding through her writing. I've been asked before, on here, where to begin with Dickinson, and honestly, I think anywhere would work. Her poems are packed full of emotion, but stylistically, they are sparse. The beauty, and the terrors, of reality are interjected, frequently, with dashes of various size and purpose. As a result, Dickinson's poems are short and punchy, allowing you regular space to pause, insert your own experience into punctuated gaps, or fly through the lines like a speeding train of thought. 🤔: I have two questions for you today. Munro 🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷 Other than the zombie-like rising of a dead [mortal] diety, Christian Easter stories aren't all that gothic. This year, instead of my usual celebrations (which are to do nothing in particular, but with increased quanitites of chocolate), I decided to seek out representations of Easter in the gothic canon. Limited to my personal lock-down library, Hector Hugh Monro's 'The Easter Egg' (1911) was all I could find. Set in a geographically ambiguous fictional European town, there is royalty, religion, intrigue and terror. It's just a few short pages long, and though not all that memorable, takes a rapid, unresolved dive into darkness! I would hazard a guess that there are political overtones, but rather than do any research today, I shall observe the holiday, and enjoy an egg instead. ⛪🐣: How will you be observing Easter today? Considered a key figure amongst the 2nd generation of British Romantic poets (which followed the likes of Wordsworth & Coleridge), Keats & his young contemporaries were more open to exploring the space in which the Romantic & gothic literary movements naturally intersected. I will explore a few of Keats' expressions of the gothic over the remaining weeks of the 🕸Dark Poetics🕸, but today I want to follow the whispers of Keats' own muses. Frances 'Fanny' Brawne (1800-1865), recipient of 'Bright Star' (love sonnet, c. 1820) & Keats' adoration, was inspiration & fiancée to the young poet. 🦋More on their relationship can be learnt in Keats' enchanting 2009 biopic of the same name, but for now it's important to acknowledge that it began with book-borrowing. Dante's hellish epic, 'Inferno' (1472) was amongst the first works lent. Dante's 'Divine Comedy' (of which the 'Inferno' is just one part) paved the way for the gothic, introducing many themes & ideas which were repeated so frequently that they remain tropes of the mode. Keats was also reading the goths themselves though. Continuing the above quote, in a letter to John Hamilton Reynolds (1818), Keats wrote: "I’ll cavern you, & grotto you, & water-fall you, & wood you, & water you, & immense-rock you, & tremendous-sound you, & solitude you.” Relaying a windy walk which nearly ended in tragedy to his friend, Keats playfully evokes the superstition & sublime of the natural world which exists in Radcliffe, the Romantic, and, of course, the gothic.
