Wolf had to be towed this morning, because even though he had added quite a lot of anti-gel to his diesel fuel, it was -51 where he was and his fuel turned to wax. They had to thaw it with forced hot air, change the fuel filter, and put more anti-gel in it. The tow and service cost $1400.
In ND they sell Diesel1 which won’t gel to -60 degrees but all the Loves they have to fuel at sell just diesel and it gels below 16F. He just bought $180 worth of antigel last week and he’s used it all, already but nobody was prepared for that kind of cold.
He’s stuck at their terminal in Winnipeg. The feels like right now in Pembina is -54 and -47 in Winnipeg. He said he wouldn’t get 5 miles before he started to gel up again. So his dispatch told him to stay at the yard there and if he needs help in the morning, they can help him. Much cheaper to get thawed out at terminal than at a truck stop. I’m glad he has warm clothes, handknit wool cowls and mitts, hats and socks... and a week’s worth of food, since this trip is taking longer than usual. There are 2 other drivers stuck there, who might not be in as good shape as far as provisions go.
Another day or two of the truckers’ fuel freezing up and keeping them from delivering goods, and at least 1/3 of the US will find out how important they actually are to the economy.
It was interesting to wake up and find no electricity, especially at -44 °C. My neighbours invited me over because they have a generator. They are lovely people. I visited their home for about 30 minutes, and then the power was restored. I returned to my place to get my morning started. The power was off for about 2 hours. Thank you, ATCO, for getting things back working again.
If the power had gone off in the middle of the night it would have been a very different outcome.
It went off at about 7 am and came back on at 9ish. Schools cancelled classes because the buses did not run, and there was no power when the kids should have arrived.
GOT DAYUM! IT'S FUCKING COLD AND ONLY GETTING COLDER!
Pretty much every school district in the state is closed tomorrow.

Okay, we're looking at a HIGH TEMPERATURE of NEGATIVE 5 tomorrow and Tuesday, with wind chills ranging from 30 to 40 BELOW ZERO! Not only that, but Governor Walker has declared a state of emergency due to a propane shortage. And Stritch isn't fucking closed?! Bunch of fucking sadists. It is dangerously cold outside. The Milwaukee Health Department issued a statement basically saying "Stay the fuck inside!" and you're not closed? Milwaukee Public Schools have all closed for tomorrow AND Tuesday, and they NEVER fucking close! And yet Stritch has not closed yet. Hate to break it to you Stritch, but I'm not coming whether you close or not. Sorry, but on the offchance my car even starts, I'll have frostbite just from being outside the few minutes it takes to scrape ice off the windows. Not worth it. Go fuck your respective selves.
