     Feet scurry against the floorboard, making a hurried escape --- or at least attempting to. Blunt nails dig into hard, splintering wood, staining the damp surface with red.

     R   E   D   .

     Oh, how he remembers it, as fresh as the dawn of a new day coming. It ripples in the water, her cold embrace of slow-moving tides clinging to the color as though it were her child --- just as she clung to the drowned, his offering to a fair maiden.

     And oh, how he remembered the face of this one: platinum blue eyes, as blue as the clear skies. Short, matted hair, the color of a shark’s underbelly. Of older age, sunken eyes and of near gaunt build. Captain. Nothing had changed.

     ‘ It’s been so long ’ his mind gnaws at his intent, and fingers further curl tighter around the barber-blade’s handle. There was no featherfall to this one’s end. Instead it’d be harsh, cruel, unforgiving; just as his own. Just as the sea.

     For she was a silent wrath, and he would be her voice in this wordless dance between a tomb and the drowned. And so, heavy, labored footfalls relentlessly slam the docks, as though he may fall through despite how little he weighed, and as a dry throat attempted to scream, Pyke leapt.

     A frantic plead. Flesh caught in the grasp of a monster. There’s a struggle. Then stillness, a choked cry for help. Silence.
