In my Dad’s last days, he struggled with having a very dry mouth but was no longer able to drink / swallow. We spent a lot of time wetting his lips and mouth with a sponge or teaspoons of liquid, but he kept asking for lemonade (even when we were wetting his mouth with it). I had an idea to get my sister to mix up some honey and fresh lemon juice - from the Meyer lemons from the farm, along with honey from my sister’s hives, and we made honey lemon drink for Dad. (It was one of his cure-alls, especially for colds but really for anything).
After a couple of teaspoonfuls, he smacked his lips and his eyes lit up and he declared, “I like honey and lemon!” And it was some of the few clear words he spoke to me before he passed a couple of days later.
So it’s been bittersweet - just like honey and lemon - to be making honey lemon drinks for F this week while he’s been suffering a head cold.
I Love My Space Dads ✨
rossi seeing emily walking in with mcdonald’s: an unhealthy, processed meal such as that will kill you faster.
emily: damn, i knew i should’ve bought two.
Saying goodbye to my dad before leaving to finish packing and head to the airport:
Me: I love you. (Pause; my dad says nothing. I squeeze his hand and try again.) I love you. My dad: (looks at me) I love you, too. You keep saying that, as if there was any doubt.
Life has been a nightmare lately, and this visit was mostly devastating, so I am keeping this little moment of love and sass in the corner of my heart.

Do the people in The Globe know they’re in the presence of greatness??
I can’t help but wonder how much your dad really knows about the things you’re feeling with regards to your relationship. Do you think he understands you the way you’d want him to?
I mean, does anyone understand us the way we’d want them to? Hopefully, it’s towards a yes for the majority of the time with the people closest to us, particularly your family, but… it’s a pretty big ask, y’know? The stuff we all kinda hope to achieve.
I get that to a lot of folk on the outside we all might have a bit of… an interesting? family dynamic. The whole lot of us. But, well… it’s not really. I know people always have a bit of a chuckle when we say we’re really a very ordinary family, but we really are just that, who love each other a whole ton.
Yes, even @starman-john-tracy who often looks as though emotions are totally too bothersome to bother with. Him especially.
And that includes Dad. Y’know, there’s not really a playbook for ‘love of your life, mother of your children dies’ and then ‘eight year disappearance into space, presumed dead’ is there? We’re asking entirely human and fallible people trying to understand other entirely human and fallible people… and the best we can do is try and work it out, y’know? Nobody gets it right all the time.
Sure, maybe younger Gordon might’ve had other things to say, but current Gordon is… starting to understand a bit more. Two way street, y’know?
…
Anywaaaay, that was a ramble. So.
All that to say I still think he’s the very best of dads and always will. He’s my dad! What else do you think I was going to say? 🙂↔️
Papa saw me buying flowers once, and ever since then, I get weekly sunflowers and lilies, random bunches for my room, and sometimes a gajra, always Mum’s pick. Desi dads won’t say i love you, they’ll just quietly keep doing things that mean it.
