Heroes & Villains The DC Animated Universe - Paper Cut-Out Portraits and Profiles
Derek Barnett had been a star athletes at Dakota Union High School, but his slumping grades were threatening to get him suspended from playing. Required to stake on a tutor, Derek chose Virgil Hawkins. During their first tutoring session, Derek started getting cramps. On his way home, the cramps were getting more painful. It erupted when he boarded the bus home as Derek transformed into a lumbering monster composed of crackling white iconic energy.
This transformation was a delayed response to Derek’s having been exposed to the mutagenic effects of the Quantum Vapor. Terrified over the monstrous being he had become, Derek ran away. He found that he could transform back into his original state, although it took great concentration and only lasted a short time before he reverted back into the energy monster.
Derek was sought out by Ebon. The villain coerced Derek into joining his crew of super powered goons called The Meta-Breed. Seeing no other avenue in his life, Derek reluctantly agreed and took on the new alias of ‘D-Struct.’
As a member of the Meta-Breed, D-Struct took part in the looting of a sporting goods shop. Static arrived to battle these villains yet D-Struct shot out an energy blast that took down the hero.
Back at their hideout at Milestone St. Station, D-Struct didn't join the others to celebrate the successful heist. Instead, he sat off to the side contemplating his situation. Static had followed the villains back to their hideout and he furtively approached Derek. Static was able to convince him that there were other options, that his family would still love him and there was very encouraging research being done on reversing the effects of the Quantum Vapor.
The two ran off and Derek was reunited with his mother. He gave himself up and volunteered to be a test subject in Bang Baby research in hopes of finding a way to reverse the effects of the Quantum Vapor.
Actor Bumper Robinson provided the voice for D-Struct, with the reluctant villain first appearing in the third episode of the first season of Static Shock, ‘The Breed.’
