Montague Dexter planned to make history in the 1939 world fair by revealing his newest invention, a rocket ship. To show it wasn't mearly theoretical, he launched it with his wife and himself aboard. He managed to fly the ship to Mars, but crashed upon landing. It took him 61 years to repair the damage. By then, he and his wife were too old to make the journey home. However, their son, Rex Dexter, was up to the task and returned to Earth in the year 2000. Europe was in a post atomic apocalyptic state.
