Today (July 22nd 2022) weâve gotten the sad news that NĂșria Feliu has died at 80 years of age.
She has been one of the most important and popular Catalan singers since the 1960s. She has published 42 albums with traditional Catalan songs, boleros, ballads and cuplets (light-hearted music from the late 19th and early 20th centuries) and she was also the one who popularized American music like jazz and country, which was little known here before her and had never been sung in Catalan.
She always defended the Catalan language, in fact she defended that she sang jazz and chanson in Catalan because itâs a language equal to others that can be used for everything. She was also a defender of Catalan independence and womenâs freedom. In fact, she was one of the first women in Catalonia to get a driving license, back in the 1960s.
