Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
In southern African-American mythology, the gallinipper is a mosquito big enough to slice clean through a man's arm. The real gallinipper isn't quite that large, but they can still pack a whollop! P. ciliata is about 20 times larger than the other members of its genus, and adult wingspans can reach up to 9 mm (0.5 in)! Although they get a bad rap for being aggressive, this species is an important part of the ecosystem, as the larvae are known to actively predate upon other mosquito eggs and young, which helps to keep their populations down.

Bug of the Day
Yes, even mosquitoes can be cool, or even *pretty*. This is Uranotaenia sapphirina, and it's so inconsequential, it does not really have a common name. iNaturalist calls it "sapphire-striped mosquito" so let's go with that!

Iām in a medvet ento class atm and looking at all those mosquitos under the scope is giving me a newfound appreciation for how pretty they can be! So since mosquitos get a lot of hate, I wanna spread some mosquito love. Do you have a favorite mosquito?
well I mean the go-to answer has to be Toxorhynchites, both because they're so impressively large and cool looking and also because they're predators of blood-feeding mosquitos, but honestly I have a pretty soft spot for Psorophora, especially P. ciliata and their big goofy legwarmers.
you can definitely find better photos of them elsewhere but this is my only pic i took of one, back when i was working on a mosquito repellent testing project in louisiana and had to count and ID like a hundred thousand mosquitoes from our traps
anyone who likes photographing bugs has had this experience: letting something feed on you for a little longer than ideal for the sake of a picture. this Aedes caspius was lucky to have found me on an overcast day, allowing her a few extra seconds while i adjusted my settings to make up for the garbage lighting. and don't worry, she was evicted gently with a simple poke (November 6th, 2024)
this cleg (Haematopota sp.) was a similar case, with extra stupidity on my part as i absentmindedly thought to myself "i better not spook her or she might bite me" as if she wasn't already slurping me up
