Chapter 1 Chapter 2
Shadow from the past: Chapter 3
Where the hell are you? Weâre at the club. Call me. message from Dean displayed on your phone right above the information about ten unanswered calls. Itâs been a few hours now since you left your hotel room leaving only a note on a nightstand and he started to worry. âLooks like Ethan was right,â you thought to yourself trying at the same time suppress guilt and remorse which was rising up inside you. In any other situation you would answer a call from Dean in second, at his first try. You would be happy to hear his deep, husky voice on the other side, you would be smiling at the phone, assuring him that you safe and youâll be back soon. But this time was not like any other.
The first time he called you were in the middle of a chess game with your past; you couldnât pick up. The second time he called you were in the middle of enabling all the security in the safe house and making sure that no one will get in; you couldnât pick up. The third time he called you were on the way to The Pawnbroker where you accessed another safety deposit box. You left your gold coins in the big brown suitcase and instead you took out spare clothes and two switchblades Microtech Ultratech UTX-70 OTF; you couldnât pick up, you were too busy securing one coin secretly inside your bra. The fourth time he called you were shaking off the weird feeling caused by the one sentence uttered by a broker, âHappy hunting miss Y/L/Nâ; you couldnât pick up either.
Fifth and sixth time he called you were changing your outfit buried deep inside your thoughts. Everything was happening way to fast. You wanted it to slow down, to pause, to give you time to think. But you knew it was just a foolâs wishes. You jumped on the train which wonât stop now so you had to act on your instinct not on your thoughts. âHe was tracking me all this timeâŠall this time he was keeping tabs on me. Why? What is his end game?â you were asking yourself in your head. These questions were bothering you, the fact that Ethan new everything was shocking yet at the same time you were feeling strangely calm. Like the image of him secretly looking after you was somehow calming to you. âAfter everything that happened, he was still looking after me. Or was it just another assignment from Brandt?â
Seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth time you didnât even bother to look at the phone. You knew that even with all your skills and all your tricks and all your training you wonât be able to fool Dean this time. Iâm on my way you typed shortly. You order a cab driver to take you to Skyfall club and you let yourself relax for a moment.
To your surprise you were not over-analyzing the last few hours like you tend to do. You were just sitting there in the back seat of the New York cab, calm, numb even. Streets were passing by, city lights were putting you in some kind of trance and all you could do is to trace with your eyes small raindrops running on the windows of the cab.
I can neither confirm nor deny detail of this operation without the Secretary approval the sentence was echoing loudly in your head, sentence which you were sure you will never hear again. God knows how many times you said it yourself and it surprised you how oddly natural was to say it again. The felling of the words on your lips was like a taste of candy from your childhood, sweet and sour, comforting and upsetting at the same time. Like some part of you was longing to that time of your past. You closed your eyes and you could feel another flashback coming your way. You could see Ethanâs hazel eyes and you could smell Code in the air like he was standing right in front of you. You gathered all your will to block it, you couldnât bare another vision at the moment, there was no need for another visit in the past now when all you needed was to stay cool and composed. You were tired of these glimpses of memories, of Vienna, of London, of a motorcycle ride, of the feeling of blood on your hands, of a taste of the bourbon on your lips. You remembered all of it way too well, you didnât need to feel it, to smell, to taste, to see it like you were there. Because that is what it always was. Every vision, every glimpse of a memory was like a short visit in a past accompanied by all the feelings, all the smells, all the emotions that you felt at that moment. You couldnât allow yourself to be thrown off balance now when you were so close to your destination.
âMiss Y/L/N weâre here.â You heard like from far away. You thanked a driver, you got out of the cab, and you head back straight to the alley behind the building not even noticing that driver new your last name. You had a role to play in the scene which was coming next. Even if you knew that there was no hunting and there was no case only a bodies that most likely he left behind you had to be convincing. Now, you had to be a hunter.
***
âWhere have you been!!?â Dean run up to you, anger and wariness mixed in his eyes âYou forgot how to use your phone?!â he gave you a questioning look.
âIâm sorry Dean, I meet a friend which I havenât seen for ages!â that was only a half-lie âyou know us girls, we started talking about old times, I completely lost track of time.â Â
âAnd a sense of reality apparently. I called you like ten times!â anger was spiking in his green eyes, he wasnât buying it. Â
âI know I know hun,â you decreased distance between him and you and placed both hands on his chest âdonât be mad on meâ you smiled charmingly âcâmonâŠthere is no point of arguing over such a silly thingsâ you smiled again and kissed him slowly letting the pressure come off from his muscles to his hands and lips. He didnât need any more encouragement, he placed one hand on your back and another on your cheek and returned the kiss prolonging it a bit.
âI was just worried about youâ he said with his lips still on yours.
âI knowâ you whispered through the kiss. After all these years he was still making you week in your knees. âWe should go inside and caught up with Samâ your lips were moving over his.
âMhmmâŠyouâre absolutely rightâ he said without breaking a kiss which with every second was becoming more and more passionate.
âDean..â
âI know I knowâ Â
âDean, stop!â you finally broke the kiss and laughed brightly âwe got work to do remember?â you grabbed his hand and started dragging him into the building.
âWell I know better ways of spending a rainy night in New York cityâ he smirked.
âI can imagineâ you smiled fondly on bare thought of some alone time with Dean âBut sorry hun, work first, pleasures laterâ you said and open back door which was already cracked by Sam. Â
***
The inside of the club felt strange all quiet and dark with only you three inside. Place which was usually crowded with people and pulsing with lights and music felt oddly hunted. You spotted Sam in the corner of the main room swiping place with EMF meter right where he left his glass just a few hours ago. You felt the wave of tension coming in and the fact that you were surrounded by shadows and dark corners didnât help to ease it. âAre you there? Are you watching me?â you started looking around, scouting shadows around you.
âThere is nothing thereâ you heard Samâs voice âIâve checked that part already. What took you so long?â Â
âApparently Y/N decided suddenly to be a typical woman and she lost track of time while catching up with an old friendâ Dean replied with sarcasm. Â
âYou guys, I know that maybe sometimes it does not look like it, but I still am a woman and sometimes I need a girlfriend to gossip withâ you snapped back. Â
âGossip you sayâŠ?â Dean was on the opposite side of the room, but you could hear sass in his voice âabout what?â
âYou of course! What else?! Women only talk about boys, clothes and makeup isnât that right?â
âThere is nothing here!â Sam interrupted with frustration ignoring your exchange like he always did âAbsolutely nothing!â Â
âWe should check again, maybe weâre missing somethingâ you proposed.
âHonestly, I donât see a point. While you two were making out outside I swiped place twice already. You know what Iâve found? Jack. There is absolutely nothing here, except small emf spikes caused by power lines. There is nothing in the newspapers, nothing in the history of the area and building was build six months ago. I donât know you guys, it seems to me that maybe we were wrongâ he seemed disappointed. Â
âWhat about the witness?â Dean reached behind the counter and pulled out a bottle of whiskey and three glasses âthis is our last lead which we didnât checkâ he poured three drinks and handed them over to you and Sam.
âSeriously Dean?â Sam gave his brother a judging look and refused a glass.
âWhat?! Itâs not like someone will notice!â Â
âThe girl who supposedly saw everything is our last leadâ Sam continued âBut Iâm starting to think that maybe we just wanted to see a case where there was none, to begin withâ
âEverything is pointing to the fact that indeed nothing had happened hereâ you took a sip of an amber liquid hoping to ease a tension rising inside of you. You couldnât see anything suspicious but the feeling of cold spikes on your back was enough to make you feel nervous. Shadow had eyes and they were tracking your every move, every gesture, every word. Shadow was closing around you and you could feel his presence near. âLetâs check office upstairsâ you suggested forcing yourself to stay in character. Â
âI already did thatâ Sam replied âLike I said, it took you a long time to get hereâ he added seeing your surprised face âbut feel free to give it another lookâ Â
You downed the last sip of whiskey and run upstairs. In any other situation you would feel bad about the fact that Sam did most of the work just because you decided to fool around with Dean. In any other situation it most likely wouldnât happen but you needed to take Deanâs mind of the fact that youâve been gone all day. You needed to distract him. In any other situation if that would happen you would apologize to Sam but, it wasnât any other situation. With a cold bump in your stomach, tighten throat and blood pulsing in your temples you closed the office door behind you. You had no intention of checking for any clues you just needed to be alone for a moment. Dark office room felt comforting, at that moment it was exactly what you needed. âHeâs hereâŠâ you were almost sure. However, there was still doubt in you. For what is worth you made an agreement a long time ago and at that time it seemed the best decision you could take. You suppressed another wave of flashbacks âIf he is really here what is he waiting for? Maybe Iâm just imagining things. Why would he be here? That does not make any senseâ you took two deep breaths trying to convince yourself and calm down a bit. You were walking on thin ice. You knew very well that you can fool Dean only for a short period of time. He knows you too well, he will figure out that something is wrong.
âAnything?â office door rapidly opened and you saw Dean who looked like he already had at least three drinks âwell well, this is the cozy spotâ he smiled adorably and looked at you with a shiny eyes âso where were we?â he smirked and pulled you closer to him. Â
âWe should goâ cold spikes on your back returned but you kept flirty smile âwe donât want to make Sammy angrier than he already isâ you kissed him shortly to his disappointment, grabbed his hand and let him down to the main room. Â
You did one last swipe through the place, hid the glasses that you used and made sure that everything is in order before you secured the door behind you. Â
âYou guys go ahead bring car, Iâll waitâ you said stopping in mid-walk. Â
âItâs a middle of the night and itâs freezingâ Dean looked at you suspiciously. Â
âI want to grab a smoke. Or maybe suddenly you donât mind me smoking in the carâ you smirked. Â
The only reply you got was Dean frowned faced as he ordered you to wait. You ignored it completely, a long time ago you decided to stop giving a crap and you made the decision that you going to stop smoking if he stops drinking. You both knew it will never going to happen so all you could do was to frown at each other and move on. Â
You lid up a cigarette and took deep long inhale realizing how desperately you needed it over the last few hours. Bad dreams were nothing comparing to constant flashbacks and ghosts of your past materializing in front of you. âEthanâŠâ the last person you thought you will ever see again. You had to be honest with yourself, the way you parted ways the last time youâve worked together assured you that if you ever cross paths with him again it wonât end well for you. Back then you had your reason which definitely justified your actions, at least in your mind. Of course, there was no way that he knew them, you made sure of that, which begged a question: was he your friend, or enemy? He surely didnât act like an enemy. Â
You took another deep draw of your cigarette and hang in your thoughts for a moment on those hazel eyes and snarky smile, there was something dangerously frantic about them. You knew it wonât be long before Ethan will reappear again which meant that next move had to be yours. Because knowing him everything could happen. For all is worth you might even receive a mysterious, self-destructing message in a day or two and that would be very inconvenient. Â
You watched Sam and Deanâs silhouette disappear around a corner, and you smiled lightly proud that you managed to play a part perfectly and that they are not suspecting anything. At least you were hoping to. It was important right now, to keep everything hidden from them. It was important to get them away from New York as soon as possible, away from you. You knew deep down that even if now everything was relatively calm the storm was coming and when it comes you definitely donât want them around. That was the best option, for their own good, for their own safety. Because how could you explain to them all off it? How could you look into Deanâs eyes and tell him that yes, you lied to him for years? Whatâs more, they were important, they still had a job to do, people to save, and storm like any other force of nature, it can be unpredictable, you never know who might get lost or hurt or killed by deadly lighting.
You lid up the second cigarette, thick smoke was soothing your nerves relaxing your muscles with every inhale you were feeling calmer, spikes you felt couple minutes ago all but disappeared and you started doubting again if what you felt was real or maybe you were becoming paranoid. You looked around you, hoping that some movement in the shadow will clear the doubts but everything was quiet, still. âCalm before the stormâ you thought to yourself with a small pinch in the heart.
That feeling you had in there, like someone was constantly tracking your movement, like someoneâs eyes were pinpointed on you, that constant cold touch on your back, like he was there watching you from the shadows. âWhere are you?â
Your eyes widened suddenly, and all your muscles tensed up again. Cold spikes return to your back and they were more intense than before. It felt like the blood in your veins froze up and your heart slowed down and skipped a bit or two. You wanted to turn around, but you didnât have to, he was hereâŠSauvage ⊠it was everywhere. More intense than ever before. It was enfolding all around you closing you in, seducing, intoxicating, luring. You closed your eyes, your hand frozen in the mid-way to your lips. Coldness got stronger and you knew that Shadow behind you was no longer a shadow, it had a face, deep-dark brown eyes, black hair and a nameâŠ.
âJohnâŠ.â You whispered with your eyes still closed. You felt a feather-like touch on your arm almost undetectable over the clothes. Shivers went through your whole body and you leaned back just a little bit just to feel his chest beneath your shoulder. âJohnâŠ. I knew you were here,â you said with a barely audible voice. Â
âYou are in dangerâŠ.â You heard his voice right next to your ear, deep, dark, thrilling making your heart stop for a moment. He moved your hair away from your neck and gently glossed over your bare skin which made your body shiver once more. âDitch the tail. Iâll see you at Continental.â Â
âJohnâŠ.â You whispered again leaning closer.
âYou shouldnât come backâŠ.â
*** Â
Calming waves were hitting the side of the boat when you took the one last look on the sun on the horizon. You couldnât recall the last time when you felt so good, so peaceful, like all the problems and all the sorrows disappear completely. You wrapped shawl tighter and let the warm breeze gently touch your face and mess with your hair. You closed your eyes, relaxed you smiled at the felling of arms wrapping around you. You leaned back a bit and placed your head underneath his chin. He didnât say a word, he didnât have to, he only pulled you closer to him and smiled to himself. It felt good. You stood there together you with your eyes closed synchronizing your breath with his, he with a gentle look in his eyes and this feeling inside of him, like he was holding the world in his arm.
âYou know what John?â you whispered with your eyes still closed.
âHmm?â
âSometimes life is goodâ
âYes, it isâ he said and with a soft kiss on your lips made sure that you will never forget that day.
***
âCanât sleep?â Sam asked placing himself right next to you on the bench. You were sitting outside of the hotel, with steaming coffee cup in one hand and cigarette in the other. His question yanked you brutally from your memories. And reality wasnât that pleasant especially cold morning sun which was hurting your eyes. Â
âWhat, the smell of my cigarette is so strong that it got to your room and woke you?â you attempted a sarcasm. Â
âI was planning to go jogging before you two wake up but seem that my plans had changedâ he smiled lightly.
âSammy, I donât want to stand in between you and a healthy lifestyle! At least one of us needs to lead with an example.â
âWhatâs up with you lately?â he asked ignoring your sarcasm. Ignoring bullshit and pursuing as he planned it seemed like he mastered that skill to perfection.
âWhat do you mean?â you attempted the innocent smile, but you knew it was a poor attempt of mind games from your side, you were too tired. Â
âEver since we arrived in New York you seem to be on edge, all the time. And if you arenât on edge you zone out. Apparently, you canât sleep toâ he pointed at you with his opened hand âand you smoking like a chimney.â Â
Your only response was a snarky smile and rolled eyes which you used for covering the irritation raising inside you. You were so focused on Dean, on making sure that he wonât suspect anything that you almost forgot that Sam was observing everything from a distance, and he wasnât so easy to fool. Especially since you could not use the power of flirt and charm on him. Â
âDonât give me that look, you know I know this look. And I know this state,â he continued âIâve seen it way too many times on Dean. Same snarky smile, rolled eyes and cool pose. The only difference is that youâre not reaching for a beer at 7am. Something is eating you upâ he stated with confidence. Â
âIâm alright, really,â you interrupted his little tirade âyou have nothing to worry aboutâ
âMhmâŠ. Iâve seen this face before. Remember when we first met? You gave me exactly the same look when Iâve asked you if someone was chasing you. Exactly the same.â Â
âSam, I appreciate you caring and all but really you have nothing to worry about. Itâs just this city, it brings back memories. Thatâs allâ you tried your best to sound convincing but with a corner of your eyes you could see clearly that he wasnât buying it. Â
âYou never told us anything about New Yorkâ he pointed out.
âThere is nothing to talk about. It was a long time ago. In a different life.â Â
âYet you still have friend hereâ his words rose a red flag in your head âIâm sorry for saying this but I ainât buyinâ your little story about you spending your whole day with an old friendâ you looked at him sharply perfectly aware of an angry look in your eyes âDean maybe does, or he chooses to, but I donât. So maybe you would like to tell me what is going on? And before you start with another âI donât know what you meanâ believe me when I say it I know, I get it. Sometimes you just donât feel like telling him something and I get it. God knows how many times I made some decisions and I decided not to tell him, or I did something behind his back. Because at that moment, in that situation that seemed to be the best decision that I could have made. And you know what? Every time it turned out to be a huge mistake. And Iâm pretty sure if he would be here now, he would tell you exactly the same thing, because he also been there, he also went behind my back and consequences of these decisions were letâs say, pretty bad. So, whatever you doing Iâm sure you have good reasons, but maybe if you donât want to tell him, you could tell me.â Â
âLetâs pack our bags and leaveâ you said strongly âThere is no case here anyway. Letâs go to Roadhouse. It will be good for all of us. We havenât seen Ellen, Jo and Ash for such a long timeâ
âYou want us to drop the case?â Sam looked at you suspiciously.
âSam, there is no caseâ you looked him in the eyes trying to suggest him without saying that you know what you talking about âWeâre here for four days and what did we found out? Nothing, zero, zilch, nada! We can get ready before Dean wakes up, and hit the road right after breakfastâ Â
âFirst you were so eager to take this case and now you suddenly want to leave? Y/N what is going on?! Tell me!â
âSamâŠâ you sat down next to him âI need you to trust me. Can you do this?â that sounded more like a desperate plea than a question âI know Iâm not making a lot of sense, but I need you to trust me.â Â
***
âIâll pack the car and you wake up the sleeping beautyâ he replied, âWeâre leaving in an hourâ. Â Â
***
Next day
You arrived at Roadhouse in the late evening of the next day. Somehow you managed to convince Dean that there is no point in staying in New York for any longer and that indeed there was no case. True, you helped yourself with a small lie about possible vamp nest near Tulsa but after some further reflection you came to the conclusion that it was not needed. The idea of visiting the Roadhouse was convincing enough.
Upon arrival Ellen and Jo greeted you with smiley faces, warm hugs and cold beer. Itâs been a while since the last time you visited them, you didnât even realize how much you missed each other. It took you only a few minutes to start talking about interesting hunts, types of monsters you encountered, in which moments lore had failed you and how you solved it, or how many times the monster turned out to be a psycho without a leash. You were laughing, smiling, drinking cold beer, the jukebox was playing Here I go again by Whitesnake, it was a good time. Â
âSo vamps in Tulsa, tell us moreâ Dean suddenly jumped on the subject after finishing another beer âWeâre coming back from a Rotten Apple without ghost trophy so we gonna take anything. Iâm sure Y/N will not say no to some good old decapitationâ he smirked to you.
You smiled back but with a corner of your eyes you noticed Ellenâs face dangerously shifting from happy to furious. Â
âAsh will fill you in with detailâ she said shortly âY/N come help me on the back, I have a barrel of great beer stored for special occasions. Â
âWoah, Ellen I can do itâ Dean stood up ready to help.
âYou my guest at my bar so behave like one.â She scolded him. There was some power in her presence, power of authority, the kind of you are not arguing with âY/N come, I need to talk to you.â Â
You wanted to run, you wanted to run like hell. She reminded you of your mother, and by looking at age difference she could be your mother. You knew very well what was coming up next and you were not ready for this. Suddenly you felt like a teenager again, anxious, ready to rebel, ready to fight with your mom even if you knew that she was right. She closed the door to the basement behind you and turned to you with her arms folded on her chest and furious look in her eyes.
âEllenâŠlistenâŠâ you stared but she was not up to listening to your explanation. Â
âNo, you listen and listen to me well!â she interrupted âI donât know what you got yourself into and frankly I donât want to know! No, donât tell me anything! I donât want to have visitors in black suits at my doorstep tomorrow. You do you, I know I cannot stop you anyway. You are a grown woman and a skilled one too. But dragging those boys with you into this mess! No, that wonât happen! How could you even! First you lying to them for years and asking me to cover for you and now this!? Iâve got up to here of these secrets and I curse the day when Ash found out about your âother activitiesâ. You were assuring me that this is a past, long gone. You were looking me straight into eyes and assuring me, saying that I can trust you. And now what?! Now you want to drag Sam and Dean with you into all of this?!! Now youâŠâ
âNo, Ellen stop!!â you interrupted. As much as you understood her anger and where was it coming from you were not a sheepish type and standing and listening wrongful slam was not your style âIâm not dragging them with me!!â she looked at you surprised âThis is why I persuade them to come here in a first place!â Â
âThis better be goodâ Â
âI need to come back, I need to disappearâŠâ you started but upon seeing Ellen disapproval you decided to stop playing nice âYou donât get it so donât you dare give me that look!! What Ash found is just the tip of the iceberg. Just a small small tip. And I donât have any intention of explaining you everything else. Not because I donât trust you, because I do, but because youâre my family and I donât want to put you, Jo or anyone else in danger. I know you are skilled hunters, damn one of the best in the world but it does not change anything. This is simply above your paygrade. Yours, Joâs, or Samâs and Deanâs combined together. And itâs not because they are not skilled enough, or they are not good enough no itâs not that. You, them, you are hunters! You hunt monsters! You are not killers.â Â
âAnd you are?â she interrupted. Â
âMy point isâŠâ you continued ignoring her question in Samâs style âIâm not dragging them with me. Iâm asking you to delay them after my disappearance. And keep my secret to yourself. I know they will go after me. Or at least Dean will, there is no doubt in that. But I can disappear and even with his skills he will have a hard time picking up my trail. So am asking you, to delay him as long as possible and to never ever under any circumstances show him this file that Ash has on me. For his own good, for his own safetyâ Â
âWhat about you?â there was a care in her eyes, wariness which made your heart melt a little bit.
âIâll be fine. I donât have the same principals as they do. I know how to take care of myselfâ you replied with a cold voice. âI need to borrow your car. It will be returned to you, donât ask how and by whomâ Â
âYou are leaving now?â
âYes. Iâm on the clock here, time is running out and sooner I will be away from yâall than betterâ Â
Out of nowhere she reached out to you and pulled you in the strong hug. You could feel that she was shaking a bit, like a mom who didnât want to let her child go. She held you for a couple of moments until you pulled yourself away. Â
âEllen, I need to goâ Â
âI hope is not a goodbyeâ Â
âI donât knowâ you replied shortly âI donât knowâŠ.â Â
***
You took one last look at the flickering lights of the Roadhouse. You could hear the Deans laugh, you could see Sam silhouette leaning over the bar and talking to Jo, you could hear Hot Blooded by Foreigner in the speakers, they all had a wonderful time. Â
In a couple of minutes Ellen will join them and she will destroy this party by selling them some lie about your disappearance. Dean will get pissed in a matter of seconds, Sam will get worried but he will do his best to stay calm. They will start asking questions, they will try to call you. But your phone will be dead. How long it will take them to realize that you are nowhere to be found? An hour? Maybe two? It doesnât matter. By that time you will be long gone. Â
You turned on an engine of old Dodge pickup and you turned around one more time. âIf you only knew how much I love you D. â you felt a pinch in your heart while a single tear fell down your cheek. You heisted for a short moment but just when you were about to turn off an engine deep, dark voice sounded in your head You are in dangerâŠ
You took a deep breath, threw in a gear and disappeared into the night.

You abruptly opened your eyes. You were lying in the bed breathing heavily trying to pull yourself back from a dream. Room was completely dark, one of the benefits of not having a windows in the bedroom. You slowly started gaining conscious. Your hands drifted to your stomach subconsciously but your cold fingers did not found anything suspicious. You slowly and gently got up from a bed trying not to wake up man who was sleeping right next to you.
âIt was just a dreamâ you thought to yourself rubbing your eyes âjust a fucking dreamâ.
You got up from a bed and quietly went to the bathroom. You shut the door behind you and turned on the light. Sudden, sharp and unapologetic whiteness of the celling lamp was hurting your eyes but at the same time it was good for bringing you back to reality.
âFuck I look like shitâ You looked at yourself in the mirror. Your eyes seemed to be tired and sad at the same time, there were visible dark circles below. You havenât dream this kind of nightmare for years.
âScrew itâŠthere is nothing I cannot fix with a make upâ you thought to yourself while splashing cold water on your face.
âHey sweetheartâ you felt a hand wrapping around your waist. You stood up from a bathroom sink with your eyes still closed only to feel him standing right behind you âHaving hard time to sleep?â he asked with a husky voice burying his face in your neck and kissing you lightly.
âDean...â you whispered and put your hands over his wrapping his arms tighter around you âDid I wake you?â
âNahâŠalarm clock didâ he replied brushing his lips over your neck.
âLiarâ you whispered âwhat time is it?â
âAfter 6amâ
âDamn⊠it is way too early to be awakeâ you sighed âCoffee or bed?â you asked turning yourself in his arms to face him. He looked adorable with his messy hair and sleepy green eyes.
âSweetheart as much as I wish to go back to bed with youâŠ.â he started
âI know I knowâŠresearch, we got work to do blah blah blahâ you cut him off annoyed a bit âIâm gonna make some coffee thanâ you kissed his cheek and left him in the bathroom for his morning routine.
You dressed yourself quickly. Black sweatpants and black tank top seemed like a good option for not such a good morning. You tight your hair in loose messy bun just enough so they would not fell on your face. You grabbed your phone from a night stand and brown leather which was hanging loosely on the chair. Coffee was the mission but on your way to kitchen you decided to take a small detour and walk outside for some fresh air.
Morning was cold and gloomy, dark clouds were all over the sky and morning sun was nowhere to be found. You reached to your pocket for a package of cigarettes and a lighter. It was a routine already. After a nightmare like that you needed some cold air and cigarette.
âWhat the hell was thatâ you thought to yourself inhaling a smoke. You closed your eyes enjoying a morning cigarette and you saw it all flashing back. This elegant, modern classic roomâŠold rotatory phone, black satin sheets on the king size bed, Blantonâs Single Barrel Bourbon on the night stand right next to fully loaded Glock 26 and your body cover in blood. You put a cigarette into your mouth and started rubbing your left shoulder âSome wounds will never healâ you thought to yourself. Â
Dream caught you of guard. True, you were used to a nightmares, you had them since you could remember, way before you entered supernatural world. Perks of being a witch. Your dreams were always vivid and felt very very real. Sometimes there were more than just a dreams. Premonitions would be more accurate, visions ofâŠyou didnât know exactly of what. Itâs not like you foreseen the future. It was more a feeling, a warning manifesting through your dreams. Sometimes you had hard time to interpret them correctly and you never talked about it with Dean or Sam. They would understand but you didnât want to worry them. Especially Dean who was worrying constantly even if he was doing his best not to show it. And there was of course another site to all of itâŠhe did not knew everything about you. There were things that you left hidden from everyone, well almost everyone, but Dean was one of the people that you kept secrets from. Not because you didnât trust him, you did. He was your friend, your partner, your safe haven and for over 6 years now. And that was the reason why you kept a secrets from him. You didnât want to ruin what you found here. But past is a past...it creeps out in the darkness, lurks form the shadows, and you can never outrun it.
You inhale thick smoke one last time and you went back to a bunker. Smell of coffee hit your nose and you smiled to yourself hearing Gimmie Shelter by The Rolling Stones playing in the kitchen. You entered a kitchen and saw three steaming cups of coffee on the table, two black and one white, just as you liked it. Sam was sitting in front of his laptop going through morning news as he did every day. Dean on the other hand was behind stove waiving plastic spatula to the beats of music and humming words of the song under his nose.
âRise and shine Y/N!â he smiled to you âbacon and eggs what you think?â
âNah thank you I had a breakfast alreadyâ you smiled sarcastically sitting down opposite to Sam.
âYeah⊠I can smell your breakfast up hereâ Dean frowned âI thought weâre passed this subjectâ
âOh gimmie some brake Dean!â
âIâm just saying smoking ainât good for ya sweetheartâ
âYeah yeahâŠand your greasy bacon is?â you snapped back âDean I donât have a strength to argue with you before my morning coffeeâ
âHow about some smoothie?â Sam asked lifting his head from a screen of his laptop.
âThat sounds more like it. Thank you Sammyâ you agreed with a smile
âOh so thatâs how it is?!â Dean teased âsmoothie over bacon and eggs?! Whatâs wrong with you people? Smoothie for god sakeâŠâ
âI prefer something energizing and easy to swallow at the morning. You know that hunâ you replied with a slightly apologetic voice âI appreciate a gesture but Iâm really not feeling like eating anytime soonâ you added.
âThat bad huh?â Sam asked placing a banana-strawberry smoothie in front of you âDean mentioned that you had a rough nightâ he added seeing your puzzled face.
âYeah, but not that bad as he described it. I had worseâ
âYou looked pretty freaked outâ Dean said sitting to your right with a plate full of eggs, bacon and crispy toasts on a side.
âLike I saidâŠâyou said changing your voice slightly to emphasize your words âI had worse. Can we change subject? Sam, you found something good?â
âYes actually. I believe I found us a caseâ Sam replied looking back at the screen of his computer.
âGreat!!â you almost clapped your hands with excitement. You were feeling very much like hunting today âwhat is it? Ghost, demons, werewolves, shape shifters, vampires? Please say vampiresâ you added with a childish voice.
âSomeone is eager to huntâŠâ Dean noticed.
âWhat?! Donât blame a girl for need to hunt things and save folksâ you replied with most innocent smile that you could master in this moment.
âMhmâŠâDean hummed âmore like to put a bullet or ten in some monster headâ he pointed out sarcastically.
âI donât know yet to be honestâ Sam continued ignoring your little exchange with Dean âTwelve bodies dropped deadâ
âWhere?â Dean asked chewing on his bacon.
âNew Yorkâ Sam replied âOne witness reported over dozen of dead bodies in one of the fancy clubs in Manhattan. All brutally murdered, at least 3 bullets per bodyâ.
âThat doesnât sound like us. Itâs more Gangs of New York than Ghostbustersâ Dean mumbled through eggs.
âMaybe. But there is more to the storyâ Sam scrolled a bit through the article âWitness is 25 years old Karen Davis, collage student. She stated that over the course of about 5 minutes she heard multiple gun shots and saw bodies dropping on the floor. She run outside along with other people. She called police and when cops showed up she went back to club with a company of three officers. And this is where itâs getting interesting. All bodies were gone. No trace of a gun shots, blood, bodies or anything. Like nothing ever happenedâ
âSo what cops are saying?â Your interest definitely peeked. Â Â
âNothing. Mass hysteria caused by a prank. No bodies, no caseâ Sam replied.
âWorth checking outâ you stated âmaybe itâs a hunting. Itâs a New York. Lots of people could die in there. Weâve seen that before. Ghost trapped into loop reliving their own deathâ
âAlright looks like we do have caseâ Dean drank what left of his coffee and stoop up âYou kids go grab a gear and pack our stuff and Iâm going to check on baby. Itâs a day ride to New Yorkâ
âFancy club in New YorkâŠâ you sighed âThat means suits, heels and tiesâ
âThatâs right baby! It is time for tight skirt and heels!â Dean smirked at you and left to garage.

Two days later you stood in front of NYPD 14th precinct in Manhattan New York. It wasnât your typical hunting area. Rarely were you hunting in the big cities like New York, frankly you could remember one or two cases which you took in big cities. All of it due to the fact that it was definitely tougher to do your job here than in small cities. People were tougher to crack, harder to talk with and they usually pretended that they see nothing even if they undoubtedly saw something. And policeâŠpolice was whole different story all together. Letâs just say that it was easier to fool small town cop then big city cop. But couple last weeks were quiet and frankly you all started to actively search for a job. You especially were bored out of your mind and annoyed with your daily routine. Because what hunter can do when there is nothing to hunt? Argue with Dean over socks he left again next to the bed in your shared bedroom. Or his boxers he left on the floor in the bathroom. Or how messy bathroom sink looked like every time after you finished your make up. Or the fact that he wants to watch Aliens six time over last two weeks. Or about how much he drinks, or how much you smoke. Or how much Sam is annoyed by both of you. Or the fact that you forgot a pieâŠagain.
It was about time for a hunt because you all were starting getting on each other nerves.
âAlright, time for a showâ you thought to yourself looking at your reflection in the Impala windshield.
âYou look absolutely amazingâ Dean complemented sizing you from head to toe.
âWell thank you misterâ you smiled with a charm. You knew very well how good you look. You did your absolute best today. When putting your outfit today you decided to look professional but sexy and dangerous at the same time. You decided to wear black leather-ish fitted pants with high waits, black sleeveless satin blouse unbuttoned just enough to cause a distraction to any cop that you will talk to today. You left your heels home, only woman knows how hard it is to run in heels, and you bet on your trusty suede booties which looked like they were one with a leather pants. On top you put your favorite brown leather jacket which was always useful, especially for hiding gun on your lower back. Hair you put into tight, sleek high pony tail.
âStill got itâ you thought to yourself satisfied of the look that you managed to put together. It was New York, and you had to be honest with yourself, you and New York had a history together. As much as you wanted to suppress memories creeping out in every corner you couldnât. There was something odd about being back in Big Apple. Something strangely comforting and familiar yet oddly unnerving at the same time. Something was off and deep down you felt that clearly.
Dean stood right next to you and fixed his tie just to teas the fact that you were checking yourself out in the windshield.
âWell how do I look?â he winked at you.
âDangerous⊠if you get any lucky maybe some foolish girls will end up in your bed todayâ you winked back at him and walked towards the precinct.
âIf you get any lucky maybe you will score today too. With this ass it wonât be hardâ he teased quietly but loud enough so you could hear him.
âHush! Behave yourselfâ you scolded him with a smile âBe professional, we got work to doâ
âYes mam!â with that Dean approach the counter âAgent Page and Tylor FBIâ he introduced himself and you flashing badge in front of the officer.
âWeâre here about shootout in the Skyfall clubâ you followed flashing your badge and slightly hovering over the counter. You didnât even have to think about what you do or what you say, it was routine already for Dean and you. You did that together way too many times.
âFollow me agents.â Police officer replied shortly with a slightly shaky voice and he led you to the commissioner office.
âLike taking candy from a babyâ you thought to yourself satisfied that everything was going smooth like usual. Until it didnâtâŠ
âŠ.
It was only split of second, you werenât even truly sure if you really saw what you thought you saw. Or more like who you thought you saw. Maybe it was a wave of brown hair, or way he walked, or the smell of leather, fresh air and Code by Armani which followed him. All of that was more than enough to lose your cool for a moment. You slowed down loosing your rhythm with Dean and your eyes followed the smell and the felling.
âŠ.
âWas thatâŠâ you thought to yourself.
âŠâŠ
âAgent Tylor?â Dean voice brought you back to reality âEverything alright?â he was looking at you disoriented.
âŠ.
âYeahâŠâ you said with barely audible voice âYes agent Page, everything alright. It was just a hunch. Though I saw somethingâ you added out loud catching up to him. âShall we?â you added and you entered commissioner office not waiting for Dean.
Office was dark, full of boxes, office containers, coffee cups and papers lying all over. Cigarette smoke was floating in the air clearly visible in dimmed light which immediately caused irritation in Dean. Commissioner was old school cop who surely seen too much in his long years of duty.
âCommissioner Loebâ he introduced himself not lifting his eyes from the document he was trying to read âAgentsâŠ?â
âTylor and Pageâ you introduced yourself and Dean âWe would like to talk to you aboutâŠâ
âYeah Skyfall club shootout. I heardâ he cut you off with his eyes still focused on the document âNothing to talk about here. There is no case. There never was one to begin withâ
âWe will decide if there is a case or if there is noneâ Dean spoke up with cold gruff voice âWe would like to see case filesâ he added.
âOf course you would like to see case filesâ still looking at the document âBut let me ask you this one agentâ he emphasized last word âWhy FBI is suddenly interested in none existing case involving shootout which never happened?â
âWell commissionerâ you spoke up âit is none of your business I believe. And correct if Iâm wrong but I believe we are the one here who are asking a questions. Your job is to politely answer them and help us do our jobâ you added with a smooth voice at you sat down on the opposite side of the desk. âYou donât mind?â you asked rhetorically reaching for a cigarettes in your pocket and lighter on his desk. That move definitely caught his attention, exactly as you hoped it would.
He finally looked up from the document which he was so stubbornly reading just in time to see your cleavage exposed while you were hovering over his desk.
âI definitely donâtâ he said firmly not even trying to hide his interest in your breasts. You could swear that you heard Deans jaw clench while he took two small steps to stand right behind you.
âStupid rules donât you agree?â you said lighting up your cigarette âNo smoking indoors. I wish I could find an asshole who came up with this rule and show him what I think about itâ
âI completely agree with you agent Tylorâ commissioner replied. You knew you had him on a hook. Just like you planned.
âCall me Y/Nâ you replied looking him directly into eyes âSo about this non existing case involving shootout which never happenedâ you continued âFiles? Iâm sure you have a report somewhere hereâ
âOf course, of courseâ commissioner started going through pile of folders stacked on the side of his desk âGot it! Here you go agent Tylorâ he handed you over a folder with a smile that immediately created in you need to punch him in the face.
âThank you commissionerâ you smiled charmingly and passed folder to Dean without even looking at it. You played your part, you got a files.
âSeeâŠthat wasnât so hard wasnât it?â Dean uttered with a snarky voice taking a files from you. He quickly went through the pages âThatâs it?â
âWell thatâs all we could gatherâ commissioner defended himself âLike I said there is no case.â
âLet me make this straight. You did get 911 call from a panicked girl who reported that she heard multiple gunshots and she saw at least dozen of bodies dropping on the ground and you didnât even bother to take an official statement from her?â Dean summarized.
âYou forgetting agent that after my guys arrived to check out so called shootout they found absolutely nothing. No guns, no blood, no bodies, no tracers of any shootoutâ commissioner defended again âYou wonât tell me that someone wiped this place clean in a matter of less than 20 minutesâ
âYeah that is exactly what we could expect from you and your guysâ Dean snapped back âWe gonna keep this and do expect visit from upstairsâ he waved the folder and started to walk out.
âThank you for cooperation commissionerâ you put down your cigarette and followed Dean.
âAgent Tylor!â commissioner rose up from his chair âLet me know if you need any help. Any help at allâ
âWe wonâtâ you replied with charming smile and you walked outside with Dean.
âLike taking candy from a babyâŠ.â
 ***
âWell that was a bummerâ Dean stated and open passenger seat doors for you âWe got stinking pile of nothingâ
âI kinda expected that to be honest, we knew right from the get-go that this case stinks for milesâ you took your gun out of the holster on your lower back and sat comfortably in passenger seat.
âYeah we did but I kinda hoped that they will give us something yâknow, anything to catch onto. And we donât have even witness address.â Dean took his seat in the driver seat âLetâs hope that Sam had a better luck with researching on history of the buildingâ
You stayed quiet, your eyes focused on the entry to the precinct.
âBut let me tell ya sweetheart it was pure pleasure to watch you in actionâ Dean smirked and turned on Impalaâs engine. She purred pleasantly. âThe way you played that cop! You were on your A game! New York is bringing out your inner famme fataleâ he continued but you were not there anymore. You drifted in your thoughts thinking about smell of leather and Code. Impala purred quietly trying to bring you back from your thoughts but you drifted even further.
âŠ..
You thought about dark grey 1969 Ford Mustang that you used to love so much. You could see him quietly driving with his hand on your knee. You could see his small smile and his stealthy looks in your direction when you were looking outside of the window relaxing while wind was blowing your hair. You could feel his gentle touch, you could taste bourbon on his lips and you could smell Sauvage by Christian Dior on him mixed with gun powder and something elseâŠsomething dangerous.
âŠ..
âY/N you with me?â Dean gave a worried look pulling you back to reality.
âMhmâŠâ You couldnât shake of that feeling that rising up inside you. Feeling which was telling you that this case is far from your normal supernatural gig. That there is no hunting, no ghosts trapped in the loop and that you should have never come back to New York. There was a passed creeping in the shadows and you knew very well that you cannot outrun it.
âIâm sorry babe, I zone outâ you looked back at Dean âI was thinking you knowâŠ.we donât have any lead except the club so letâs go check out the club. What you think? I bet we will spot our witness thereâ
âYou really think that three days after shootout she will be already back on the dance floor?â Dean hesitated.
âIâm sure of it. See this is a New York itâs Manhattan and Skyfall is apparently hot in this season. If you want to mean anything in your little social world you gotta be there. Shootout or no shootout. Thatâs how it is hereâ
âYou would know would yaâ. You used to live hereâ Dean pointed outâ
âYes I did. Many many years agoâ you replied shortlyâ âIn a very different lifeâ you added silently and you drifted again in your thoughts.

Two hours later you were standing in front of the Skyfall club waiting for your partner who was on âfinding parking spotâ mission. It was Friday evening and lack of a parking spot was something that you very much expected. But Dean being Dean wouldnât agree to leave baby and take a cab. Even when faced with all the logical reasons presented by you he still stubbornly refused. You were wondering which was more inconvenient for him, the fact that you dared to suggest that taking a cab is a better option or the fact that you decided that he needs to go shopping. While going through his clothes you sadly discovered that you have only two options, suit or flannel and destroyed denims none of which was suitable for high class club in Manhattan. You forced him to where simple white shirt with sleeves rolled up to an elbow and dark blue denims the only one which didnât have any history of hunting on them and not because they were the only one clean, it was because he hated them and never wore them. He claimed that he looked like a hipster douchebag and never listened to your counterarguments.
âWhere are you Deanâ you thought to yourself looking at your watch. Itâs been over 20 minutes and you were starting to feel like ditchable prom date. You took a deep breath scouting your surroundings. You knew this area very well, you recognized the streets, the corners, the alleys⊠there was history looping in every one of them. Couple blocks away there was a small jazz club which you used to visit very often, and a bit further the hotel in which you stayed way too many times. You knew it was there without need to see it. Beautiful Neo-Renaissance building glooming on the corner of the street, inconspicuous on the outside, with a velvety black canopy above the entrance and two doorman standing on both sides of the stairs. Suddenly the strange feeling from earlier came back and hit you with twice of a force. âFuck it, I need a drinkâŠor tenâ you thought to yourself and entered the club alone.
Place was crowded with people in their 20âs and 30âs searching for a glimpse of happiness. It wa lighted with warm yellows, browns and golden lights spreading more exotic and cozy vibe, something you definitely did not expected. You were expecting more cold blues and whites and silvers and more modern vibe. It was a pleasant surprise none the less. You smoothly maneuvered through the dance floor to the bar. You leaned over the bar waiting for a bartender to come to you.
âWhisky on the rocksâ he said with a wink and placed a glass in front of you âSomething good am I right? Glenmorangie 18yoâ he poured you double with single ice cube.
âWellâŠimpressiveâ you stated taking a sip of your favorite whisky. Â
âOh honey Iâm good but that that goodâ he smiled âitâs from guy over thereâ he pointed with his eyes to the booth in the corner behind you.
You smiled and turned back thinking that Dean finally manage to find a parking spot but there was no one there. Only an empty whisky glass on the table and empty sit.
Hundred thoughts went through your head all at once and felling of unease rose up deep inside. Your heart started pumping much faster than usual. You knew you lied to yourself. You never said a word to Dean about 18yo scotch that youâve been currently drinkingâŠhow he would know. You took a glass and walked straight to a booth. You didnât know what for honestly. You wanted to check for a clues, you wanted to find out if your felling was correct. Or perhaps you wanted to prove yourself wrong. Memories flashed through your mindâŠ
Mustang, jazz, Sauvage, GlenmorangieâŠhis love voice, his gentle touch, his small smile, his âThis wonât end up wellââŠ
You were making your way through the crowd, eyes focused on the glass, trying to suppress all the memories coming back to you. You forgot about case, about witness, about shootout about everything else. You were almost there, you could see clearly that ice did not melted yet, you could smellâŠ
âŠ.
Code
âŠ..
You froze in your place for a moment absorbing sudden shift in the atmosphere around you. You knew that this time you did not imagined it. Everything else disappeared, loud music seemed to be distant, dancing people seemed to dance in slow motion, reality shifted and slowed down.
You slowly turned around and you saw him walking directly towards you with his big brown eyes focused like a laser. Light was twinkling on his face almost masking curiosity mixed with anger, surprise and a bit of happiness⊠perhaps?
âY/Nâ he said without braking an eye contact. He stood few steps away from you his hand dangerously close to his side, where he most likely held his gun.
âŠ.
âEthanâ you replied with trained, polite voice.
âŠ..
âYou working again?â he asked still completely focused on you. His face tense in the anticipation.
And with that question you knew, you were sure that there was no case, no ghost, no hunting and there was definitely a shootout. You knew that he was here, he order you a drink and he is involved in all of this. Past catch up with you, there is no other way than forward. You knew that to that question there was only one correct answer.

âYou working again?â he asked still completely focused on you. His face tense in the anticipation.
And with that question you knew, you were sure that there was no case, no ghost, no hunting and there definitely was a shootout. You knew that he was here, he order you a drink and he is involved in all of this. Past catch up with you, there is no other way than move forward, no hesitation. You knew that to that question there was only one correct answer.
âŠ..
âYeah, I amâ you replied shortly without braking an eye contact with him. You slowly moved your hand to your back focused and calm yet surprised and nervous at the same time. Your senses got heightened, you could feel your every muscle, every nerve tense in anticipation for his next move.
âI thought you were retiredâ he said taking two small step towards you, his hand slowly moving closer to his side awaiting for your next move.
âWell I thought that to. But here we areâ your voice cold and composed. His appearance surly was unexpected and as much as you were sort of happy to see him you had bigger problems on your mind at that moment.
âYou look goodâ he smiled and took another two steps in your direction.
âCut the crap Ethanâ you put your whisky glass on the table right next to you âYou shouldnât be hereâ you watched his every move, every step, awaiting him to pull out his gun.
âNeither are youâ he pointed out with a smirk âthought we had an agreementâ
âWell desperate timesâ you didnât even blinked, you felt your eyes tearing up a bit from all the smoke floating in the air âI had to rethink our agreement. You know me. I just play the cards that life is dealing meâ
âYou got dealt a bad hand darlingâ he was only one step away from you. You could see how perfectly ironed his blue shirt was, he could see your lacy bra strap slipping under your cashmere blouse. You could see tiny traces of sweat on his forehead, he could see your shimmering champagne eye shadow and deep burgundy lipstick on your lips. You could smell Code on him, he could smell Addict on you. You could see in his eyes thousand thoughts running through his mind right now. He was analyzing, considering all the options⊠what he will do if you draw your gun, what will you do if he pulls out his, where are the nearest exits, on which side you are, are you happy to see him, would you be able to shoot him, would he be able to shoot youâŠ? You were wondering what he could see in your eyes because comparing to him in that moment you had only one thought in your mind âhe was here. He probably is still here, somewhere in the shadowsâŠ.watching meâ.
âYou should stay awayâ Ethan continued âand you definitely should stay away from this job. Y/N please donât do thisâ he said with pleading voice. That was it, you had to check if he was here, if he was watching. Just for a moment, just for a second, you had to checkâŠyou looked awayâŠ.
That second was enough, suddenly Code was not in the air anymore, it was all over you along with Ethan touch. He grabbed your hand on your back and stopped it gently but firmly before you could reach for you gun. Other hand landed on your hip, his face right next to yours, warm cheek pressed against yours. You tried to slip away from his grip which only caused him to press his whole body to yours and grab your hip more tightly.
âCalm down Y/NâŠcalm downâ he breathed to your ear when you started to search for a way to get out from his grasp âcalm down for fuck sake! I donât mean to fight youâ he uttered loosening his grip to prove his words. You stayed in your place trying to look at him but he only pressed his cheek closer to yours forcing you to stay as you were âdonâtâŠâ he warned and you understoodâŠhe saw something that you did notâŠyou were in danger âAgent Page on your sixâ he enlightened you slightly emphasizing on Deans fake last name.
âŠ.
âHe knowsâŠ.â you thought to yourself âDid he saw us?â you asked completely relaxing in Ethanâs arms surrendering to him and waiting for his move. It wasnât the first time and your instinct assured you it will not be the last either.
âHe will any momentâ his lips slightly touched your ear âwhen I say, kick me. Hard.â he instructed.
âWhat? Ethan I donât want toâŠâ
âHun, do me a favor and just this one time, donât argue with meâ he cut you off âIf you donât want inconvenient questions from your boyfriend over there do as I sayâ you could feel his breath on your skin, you could feel his heart bit almost synchronized with yours. He loosen his grip almost completely âYouâve got everything you need to find meâ he whispered.
âWhat makes you think I will search for you?â you smirked and kicked him in the stomach freeing yourself from his grasp.
He stumbled down and felt on one knee grasping for an air. You didnât mean to kick him that hard but you were pissed, you were furious and your anger took better of you.
âLearn what not interested means you fucking perv!â you said way to loud intended to fake a scene âBe seeing you EthanâŠâ you added with barely audible voice âStay away from shadowsâ you winked and left.
âŠ
You caught Dean in mid-way with his fist clenched and anger in his eyes. âTo closeâŠ.â You thought to yourself approaching him and trying to behave as normal as possible. You placed one hand on his chest and the other on his cheek forcing him to look away from Ethan and focus on you.
âHey heyâŠlook at me. Itâs cool, Iâm alright, nothing happenedâ you tried to call him down.
âThis douchebag was all over youâŠâ he said through his teeth completely focused on Ethan.
âItâs nothing, just an asshole who had one too manyâ you pressed yourself closer to Dean âIâve handled it. Hun please calm down. We still got work to do and I made one scene already. We donât need more attentionâ you added with soothing voice âBesides since you finally here I could use a drinkâ
Dean finally looked at you relaxing a bit under your touch. He grabbed your waist and pulled you closer to him.
âIâm sorry sweetheartâ he kissed your forehead âletâs get you a drinkâ he took your hand and led you to a bar.
He order two rounds of whisky on rocks. First one you downed immediately and second was served right away. Jameson was good but it was nothing to Glenmorangie 18yo Single Malt that you had before. Bartender served third round and you were glad that Dean didnât notice his snarky smile when he looked at you.
âYou alright sweetheart?â Dean asked seeing you downing third round in 5 minutes.
âI amâ you smiled hoping that it looked convincing âitâs justâŠI got a bit spooked thatâs allâ you lied. Adrenaline was starting to wear off revealing to your surprise how shattered your nerves were. You were shaking inside and you knew that there is no amount of alcohol that could calm you down at that moment. âFucking asshole was very persistentâ another lie. You could still smell Code all over you crudely interrupting your attempts to focus on Dean. Â
âYou want another one?
âYeah but letâs have something betterâ your thoughts went back to an empty booth and whisky glass on the table. You waved your hand nonchalantly at a bartender âGlenmorangie 18yo double, with one ice cube. Twice.â you order.
âSince when we drink fancy stuff?â Dean asked surprised smelling whisky which just got served.
âI just feel like it and bottle looks goodâ you lied again. Truthfully you wanted to taste it again. You wanted to think about him again. Was he still out there? Was he still watching?
âAnd it taste goodâ Dean took a sip âWell thatâs a damn good whisky. Have you ever drink it before?
âOf course not! Lucky shoot I guessâ you were lying without hesitation.
âSpeaking of luck, any of it with search for our witness?â Dean asked turning himself to face dance floor and tables placed close to the walls.
âI havenât seen herâ you followed him and started scouting your surroundings in hope of seeing him. But you knew very well, he was a ghost, he was a Boogeyman and he was hidden in the shadows. If he was even here. âDid Ethan knew about whiskyâŠâ you started questioning your own instincts, trying to stay calm and suppress your rising suspicions, suppress your feelings.
âAnother dead endâ Dean stated âWe will have to come back here after they close. Check for anything ghostly. For now we definitely should back to hotel. Itâs been a long dayâ
âIndeed it wasâŠâ you agreed and downed whatâs left in your glass.
âŠ
âI am so fuckedâŠ..â
***
You barely slept that night. Even if you were tired as hell and your body was starting to hurt in all the wrong places your mind was very much awake and alive. Meeting Ethan was something that you did not expected at all and being back in his arms, even just to fake out an assault, brought back all sorts of memories. Vienna, opera, your gold dress, his voice in your ear saying how deadly you lookâŠheâs smile, your kissâŠ.his motorcycle, cold beer on the rooftopâŠ
âŠ.
LondonâŠ.your gun in your handsâŠhis blood on your coatâŠ.you asking him to leaveâŠheâŠ.saying noâŠ.
âŠ.
Ethan Hunt was your past, past that you never wanted to visit again. He made his choice and you made yours. And you would lie to yourself if you couldnât admit that it was partially because of him.
Seeing that lonely whisky glass on the table did something much worse to you than Ethan could ever do, it immediately changed something in you, like with a flip of a switch. For a moment you stopped thinking about Sam, Bobby, CastielâŠyou even stopped thinking about Dean. In that moment back in the club they didnât matter, they were disposable, they were just a temporary background of your current life, of current character that you played, meaningless. All it mattered was lonely whisky glass and that fellingâŠthat shadow is no longer just a shadow. Shadow has eyes on you and he is very close.
âCome find meâŠâ
Sam of course didnât found anything suspicious on the building which at this point was no surprise for you. You needed a plan, you couldnât have them around here in New York. You had to stay, they had to leave. You needed diversion and you needed it fast. Tomorrow is Monday, and club will be closed, you, Dean and Sam will go scout the place, you will find nothing. But you knew your boys to well, you knew it will not be enough to get them out of New York. It will only get them more interested in this case, they will only dig moreâŠand there is no way you could allow this.
â6 AMâŠâ
They couldnât find out. And it wasnât about you, it was about them. It was their lives which were at stake here.
âI need a diversionâŠand I need my stuffâ
Not spearing any second more you got up from a bed, dressed yourself quickly in trusty black leggings and black shirt dress, you grabbed your bag, phone and brown jacket and just before you left you scratched few words on the notepad lying on the nightstand. Â

Couldnât sleep. Keep thinking about a case. Iâve got a hunch which I want to check.
Went to see Commissioner Loeb.
I didnât have a heart to wake you, besides he likes me more ;)
Be back soon.
Love ya XO

âWhere are we going maâamâ
âNew York Public LibraryâÂ
***
You didnât ask taxi driver to wait for you. You didnât want any attention or anyone knowing where you were headed. After you retrieved your belongings from a library you headed straight to Queens. You decided to take metro to blend in into the crowd.
âDean would be surprised knowing what can be found in old booksâ you thought to yourself feeling cold touch of your trusty Glock 26 on your back âhe would be surprised by many thingâŠâ you gently touched a key in your pocket like it was some kind of token which you didnât want to lose. You retrieve memorabilia of a different life from your hidden spot in 1984 âRussian Folk Taleâ by Aleksander Afanasyev and with them in your possession again you were headed to retrieve the rest of it, to retrieve all of it. Â
The initial nervousness caused by sudden appearance of Ethan and incident in the club was completely gone. You were calm and focused even if thousand if thoughts were running through your head. You knew exactly what you had to do even if you didnât know how to do it. âIâve got it. Everything is cool. I will figure something out. Going to grab my stuff, and force boys to leave the New York. BallsâŠeasier said than doneâ you were planning in your head âHe will show up. If heâs here he will not walk away. I guessâŠ.we both agreed on it. Damn it. It was stupid agreement. What Ethan is doing hereâŠgod fucking damn it. I need to find out what is going on. And I need to get boys out of New York. I need distraction, I need helpâ
You were deep in your thoughts letting your inner autopilot lead you right in front of the door to the small apartment. There was no name tag on the door, just a number and one lock. Foolish someone would think, only one door lock, so easy to brake in. But you didnât worry about at all. For years this apartment was staying hidden, safe and secured. Highly secured.
You entered the key, the lock yield under the pressure. You entered tiny dark space barely able to contain two people at once, you closed door behind you and waited âWhat the hell?â nothing was happening. You tapped the walls gently at first, and with a lot of force when nothing has change. âWhat the hell, why it is not workingâŠâ
âYou planning to stand there for long?â amused voice asked from the darkness âAs much as I enjoy watching you all confused I rather would like to have a coffee with youâ something clicked and darkness in front of you slowly started moving aside showing brown and beige interiors bathe in the bright noon sun. âDonât be surprised. It was IMF property once so hacking it is not that hard. For me at leastâ Ethan was sitting on the couch smiling with irritating grin satisfied that he managed to surprised you, again. âCoffee? You owe me that much for saving your ass and getting my rib broken in the processâ
âYou shouldnât be here. I thought we had agreementâ you discretely checked safety lock on your gun and you entered a room.
âWell desperate timesâ Ethan smirked.
âVery funnyâ you snarked âI could brake more than one rib but you got coffee. Hashtag prioritiesâ
âI do remember how to make you feel good at the morningâ he smirked again.
âIs he flirting with meâ you wondered âWhat are you doing here Ethan. Were you following me?â
âMaybeâ he handed you a coffee cup. For a moment your fingers touched his hand and you felt like electrocuted. Images flashed in front of your eyesÂ
Vienna, gold dress, his kiss, his jacket on your shoulders, his brown eyes looking at you lovinglyâŠ.LondonâŠ.rainâŠbloodâŠgunâŠâŠ

No

âY/N you okay?â you felt his hand on your shoulder. You looked at him and it was still there, the look in his eyes, full of care and love, but it wasnât as pure as it was years ago. You got mesmerized for a moment by the way how he looked at you. There was definitely love and care there, it was undeniable, but it was cover under the mist build of concern, nervousness and fear. In that bright noon light you noticed something else, his eyes, they were hazel, not brown. You looked deep into them âI always thought they were brownâ.
âY/N you with me? You look like you saw a ghostâ he noticed seeing you frozen in place.
âIâm alrightâ you slipped away from his hand at took a spot on the couch âJust a headache. Last night wasâŠletâs say interesting. I hadnât have much sleepâ
âWas it because of me?â he gave you a half smile.
âMaybeâŠbut donât flatter yourself. I simply wasnât expecting to see you here. Or anywhere else to be true. Frankly I wasnât expecting to see you ever againâ you answered getting back control over your mind.
âReally? I was sure we will see each other againâ he replied without hesitation âI could bet on itâ
âOh really?â that irritated you âhow long youâve been tailing me Ethan?â
âWho said Iâve been tailing youâ he was sitting on the opposite site of the couch sipping his coffee and grinning widely like he won some kind of bet that you didnât knew about. Like he was satisfied seeing you playing word chess with him and getting more and more anxious. Â
âYou know Iâve been on the NYPD precinct with Deanâ
âOh thatâs agent Page real name. Good to knowâ he made surprised face.
âYou were in the club not by accident. You were following me, you were following me since the moment I arrived to the New York. Question is why. What do you want Ethanâ you continued with a cold voice without braking an eye contact.
âOh isnât that obvious? I just wanted to see an old friendâ he was playing with you.
âAnd thatâs why you decided do brake in to the only highly secured safe house I have in NY after you discovered that I recovered my keys and my gun from a libraryâ you stated. Â
âLike I said, it was IMF property back in the day. I use it from time to timeâ he smiled innocently.
âStop denying Ethanâ you put your cup on a table âI saw you on the station, Iâve found a chip that you placed into the Russian Fairytales and I know you were in the club not by accidentâ
âIâm not denying anything. Well true, I placed a chip in the book but the rest is pure coincidenceâ he placed his cup on the table and made a small move towards you. Chess game, only with words and small movements. Same as it was in the club. You placed your figures on the board, he was avoiding them, losing only pawns but now it was his turn to move âI honestly thought that you didnât saw me at the station but I definitely saw you. And I must admit I was very happy to see youâ he smiled with eyes.
âWhy you were thereâ you interrupted.
âYou know I canât share the details with you my dear. You made your choice back in London, you knew the rulesâ he replied with a smooth voiceâŠ. you lost a knight.
âWhy you placed a chip in the book?â you remained unshaken.
âAs far as the government is concern you are rouge agent turned assassin. Trust me it is better for you that I was the one who decided to keep an eye on you not someone elseâ he lowered a voice and stopped smilingâŠyou lost a bishop.
âWhy you followed me to the club?â
âI told you already and you still donât believe meâ he was lying with a wide grin âI was happy to see you, itâs been a long time. And honestly I overheard your conversation with Dean and decided to surprise you there. I got curios thatâs allâ
âGotcha.â
âEthan as you know already I believe in a lot of thingsâ you shifted to face him directly âGhost, demons, witches, shapeshifters and even freaking Jefferson Starshipsâ you put your one knee on the couch and move slowly in his direction âI believe in magic and fairytalesâ you got even closer embracing smell of a Code you were able to see glimpse of confusion in his eyes even if half smile was still on his lips âBut coincidencesâŠ.â You were so close that you could feel his slow breath on your face ââŠare not one of themâ he wasnât fast enough. With one swift move you reached behind his back and grabbed his gun. You pulled away to the opposite site of a couch and pointed gun at him âDonât you even try. You lost. Checkmateâ you smirked.
âY/N what are you doing? Please lower your gunâ he tried to remain compose and pretend that this is all big misunderstandment.
âYou couldnât overheard my conversation with Dean, Ethan. Not without wiretapping the Impala. And thatâs something you simply couldnât do. Dean is obsessed with this car, he love it so much, and he would notice that something is not quite rightâ you stated âWhy are you really here. I shot you once. You know I wonât hesitate so you better start telling the truthâ you were looking at him with your eyes cold holding his gun close to your face so he couldnât grab it and take it away from you. Just like he taught you.
You hurt him, you saw it clearly. His face changed, smile disappeared from his face completely, mood in his eyes changed from loving and carrying to sad and worried. Bringing back London hurt him. Your behavior towards him hurt him. He shifted in place trying to distract you from that fact but you saw it, you saw how angry on himself he was for letting his guard down and letting you play him of like a rookie.
âSpeakâ you had him on point blank range.
âI canât let you open that safeâ he said firmly anger flashing in his eyes.
âWhy are you here Ethan?â you were persistent âhow long youâve been following me?â
He did not reply. He only stared at you the same way as you stared at him only difference is that you had gun on him and knowing your history he wasnât sure what your next move would be. Frankly you werenât sure either.
âEthan we can do this all day if you wantâ you speak up first.
âI donât believe that you have timeâ he smirked âyour boyfriend will start getting worriedâ he pointed out.
âHow longâŠ.â you didnât let him throw you off subject
âLower your gun. We both know that you donât want to shoot meâ
âHow much do you know?â
âŠ
âAll of itâ
âŠ
That worked. You lowered your gun just a bit and looked at him surprised. âWhat the fuckâŠwhat does he mean by all of itâ
âI know what you and Winchesters were doing after you killed your carrier in IMF. I know all your allies, enemies, numbers of fake credit cards, weapon of choice, all of yours and theirs fake badges fake IDâs all of it. Please lower your gun, I wonât ask againâ he continued with mechanical voice.
You hesitated. It was impossible. How could he know all of it. Was he your Shadow all this time? Is that mean that he was never here?
âDean Winchester, born in January 24th 1979. Sam Winchester born May 2nd 1983. Parents Marry and John, both dead. Marry in November 2nd 1983, John spring 2006. Both of them born in Lawrence, Kansas, currently staying in not so secret post war bunker in Lebanon, Kansas. Deans car 1967 Chevrolet Impala license plate KAZ 2Y5. You want me to continue?â he didnât even blinked.
You lowered your gun surprised by all this revelation. You were so wrong, all this time you were thinking that you won. That you put your figures in all the right places and you checkmate him. Yet he just proved you how wrong you were all this time. From the moment you saw him he had you in checkmate. Your moves didnât matter, you lost before game even started.
You secured a safety lock on his gun and placed it on a table. You gave him a side look, hold it for a moment and decided to pull out your own gun from behind your back, secure it and place it right next to his.
âYou were keeping taps on me all this yearsâ you stated relaxing a bit and taking a sip of a coffee which at this point got already cold. Anger and weird sense of comfort were mixing inside you ready to burst out in the storm of juicy curses.
âI was. And I must say your resume is impressive. A spy, an IMF agent, an Assassin, a hunter of god knows what just to name a few.â He was smiling slightly again.
âYou know me, I like to stay busyâ you smirked. You couldnât deny it that he had a charisma which was hard to resist.
âHeh that is trueâ he smiled fondly to the memories of you two working together in the past âAnyways, after you left IMF I decided to keep an eye on you, just in case you would decide to come back or someone would decide to make you come back. You and I both know that you cannot just leave and I was honestly worried that someone would want to use that fact and force you to do things and get involved into the matters that I didnât want you to get involved. I was happy to see that you decided to move along with your life even if it wasnât that far from what we were doing back in IMF. Let me just say that at first it was hard to believe in the things I saw.â
âI can imagineâ
âI remember that you use to joke that you are a witch, especially when I was asking about your intuition and strange decisions which you made sometimes. But after observing for quite some time it all made sense. Even if it was still weird as fuckâ You smiled innocently with sorry not sorry look on your face âBelieve me I have a lot of question and I hope you will tell me all about it. Things I saw, unbelievableâ he made a small pause âStill it was good to see you doing some good work for a changeâ
âAnd you let us fake out FBI agents, defraud money, steal, cheat etc?â you raised an eyebrow. Â
âBetter this than killing strangers for moneyâ he said with seriousness painted on his face.
Air got heavy again and tension came back. He knew why you came to this apartment. Â He knew what you were intending to do. And you knew he will be a stubborn obstacle in your way.
âAbout thatâŠâ you started.
âY/N whatever you think of doing, donât. Pack your bags and leave with Winchesters. Go back to saving people and hunting things. Donât do it. Itâs not worth itâ he caught you off abruptly âHeâs not worth itâ
âEthanâŠâ
âDid you thought this through? But I mean really thought this through. Chew down to the bone. You dip so much as a pinky back into to that pond you may well find something or someone reaches out and drags you back into its depthsâ his voice was intense, firm, demanding to listen to him. To think.
âYou know I cannot just walk away now when I stumble onto itâ you said quietly.
âYes you can!!â he got up from the couch aggressively âand this is exactly what you should do! You got life out there! Friends and family! People who loves you! Who are willing to risk their lives for you!! I know, I checked them all!â he walked to you, placed his hand on the backrest of the couch and lean towards you âYou got out once. Donât make a mistake of coming backâ he added quietly.
âItâs too late for thatâ you stood up intended to gain back some distance.
âNo itâs not! You can still walk awayâ
âAnd ignore all of it!? Just pretend that it does not exist!? Â You know me Ethan, you know I canâtâ
âWhyâ he took couple steps in your way.
âYou wonât understand. Iâm here not by accident. I meant to come here, I meant to step on this case. I cannot leave now. I cannot ignore my instinctâ you tried to maneuver your way near to the safe.
âIf you do this you will put them all in danger. You will destroy their lives.â he jumped to you and grabbed you by your arms âyou will drag them down into the swamp of death and despair and rules which they donât knowâ he hold you strongly and looked deep into your eyes âyou will sign their death sentenceâ
âLet go of me Ethanâ your voice got dangerously low.
âThey donât mean nothing to you?â
âI said let go of meâ
âI canât let you do thisâ he said breathlessly.
âWhat I do is not up to youâ you grabbed his forearm quickly with one hand and the other you hit his elbow. He loosen his grab which gave you an opportunity to swiftly swipe his legs. He fell on his back as you jumped over the backrest of the couch and grabbed your gun. You turned on your heel just to see him standing still with a gun pointed at you.
âYou should make sure that you took both of my gunsâ he smirked.
âDonât worry I wonât make this mistake againâ you sneered âLet me throughâ
âI canâtâ
âTell me why, truly why. What is going on? Am I your assignment? Or maybe he is? â
âI canât tell youâ
âOh I forgot, what was the line? I can neither confirm nor deny detail of this operation without the Secretary approvalâ you kept taunting while moving closer to the safe, your gun pointed at him, his pointed at you.
âY/N trust me when I say itâŠif you do this you will regret this. You have no idea what you got yourself into. It is not too lateâ
âLet me throughâ
âShoot me. I dare yaâ he taunted for a change.
âDonât tempt meâ You unlocked safety lock. Â Â
âI double dare yaâ
âYou know that from this range it will be fatalâ you felt buzzing in your pocket. âSon of a bitch. Great timingâ
âYou wonât pick up?â he noticed. Â
âI will call backâ
âSee I told you that your boyfriend will start worrying about youâ phone kept buzzing.
Without lowering your gun you reached out to your pocket, eyes glued to him.
âNot a good timing Deanâ you answered.
âY/N itâs Ellen. I got your messageâ you heard on the other side of the line âWhat is going on? Are you okay? Are boys okay?â
âYes Ellen we are alright. Listen can I call you back? Iâm kinda in the middle of something. Not a good timingâ you tried to keep your voice as calm as possible still pointing gun at Ethan.
âYou said that boys are in danger, you are in trouble and you need distraction. Are those your kind of trouble? Iâve got Ash on standby.â
âYes, but donât do anything for now. Iâve got everything under control for now. Maybe it wonât be necessary. Looks like I overreacted. I gotta go now, call you later and most likely we see each other soon. You will get a chance to yell on me face to face. Iâll keep you postedâ you hang up without waiting for Ellens goodbyes.
âGoodâ you heard relief in Ethans voice âYou decided to be smart after allâ he lowered his gun smiling a relief which quickly changed into the shock.
âŠ
You shoot.
Twice.
You didnât aim for him. It meant to be distraction. First bullet went right next to his foot, second into the wall. It was enough to throw him off balance. You jumped to him, with two quick moves you threw his gun off his hand and used yours to subdue him. In a matter of seconds he fell on the floor unconscious.
You quickly disarmed all security on the safe, grabbed handful of gold coins, second gun and ammo and you left leaving a note right next to the half drank coffee.

Sailing Stars by #resmartina Like shooting stars, our moving parts tear through the horizon. The Sun shows, with her glow, the gift She bestows on all she lays her eyes on. And if the python can constrict the bison, then there are no limits from which to hide from. So to the sailing stars that we call ours, let us say - "Glide on." Because the troubles of yesterday are bygones and we have only the troubles of today to rely on. #poem #penandpaper #poetry #penniesforpoems #writing #crossfiction #crossoverpoetry
