I spend a lot of time writing about love—and romance. But today I want to talk about something else I care deeply about: justice, equity, and the staggering potential of collective action.

Support independent journalism, legal aid, and refugee resettlement.

♨️This isn’t utopia—it’s math. It’s what happens when power is redistributed with urgency and accountability.

And yet, most billionaire philanthropy is wrapped in legacy-building, tax optimization, and foundation gatekeeping. The money exists. The need is urgent. The question is: who gets to decide what “giving back” looks like?

I write fiction, yes. But I also write boundaries, legacy, and truth. I believe in timestamping originality and challenging systems—whether it’s fandom mimicry or global inequality.

It recently came to my attention that OpenAI is considering buying Pinterest. Pinterest-a platform that, for sixteen years, has been a sanctuary for creatives, a place where we gather inspiration, share our work, and build little visual worlds that feel personal and human. The idea that a company responsible for ChatGPT, DALL·E, and Sora might take ownership of a space built on authentic creativity feels surreal in the worst way.

There’s something painfully ironic about it. Pinterest has always been about the messy, imperfect, deeply human process of making things. It’s where artists pin half‑formed ideas, mood boards, color palettes, sketches, dreams. It’s where individuality thrives. And yet the company now circling it is the same one whose tools are actively replacing artists, flattening creative labor into something automated, polished, and soulless.

We’re already watching AI‑generated books flood marketplaces with copy‑and‑paste plots, AI “music” that sounds like a ghost of a real artist, AI art that imitates styles it never lived through, and AI videos stitched together without any lived experience behind them. These things look like art, but they don’t feel like art. They’re simulations-reflections without a source, echoes without an original sound. They strip away the flaws, the fingerprints, the humanity that make creative work meaningful in the first place.

To imagine that same company taking control of a platform that has been a refuge for creative expression feels like watching a safe space slowly swallowed by the very force that threatens it. It’s not just a business move-it feels symbolic. Another reminder that in the eyes of tech giants, nothing is sacred. Every community, every outlet, every corner of the internet that once belonged to people eventually becomes a target for acquisition, optimization, and monetization.

Peter Laird is an odd beast as far as creators go.

A lot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fanbase seems to resent him, and I think the resentment comes down to one thing: creative integrity. Laird never pretended to love the 1987 cartoon. In fact, if you read the internal memos he sent during the production of the 2003 series, “Fred Wolf” is practically used like a profanity. It becomes shorthand for everything he did not want the Turtles to be.

For a huge portion of the audience, that is sacrilege. Because for them, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is not an adaptation. It is the text. It is the Turtles. Bright colors. Pizza jokes. Surfer slang. Toy aisles. After school ritual. For many fans, they did not even know the Mirage comics existed until years later. So when Laird openly dismisses that version, it feels like he is dismissing their childhood.

But from Laird’s perspective, the real text was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mirage comic book. Black and white. Violent. Moody. A strange indie book clearly influenced by Frank Miller and raw 1980s comics energy. The Fred Wolf cartoon was not a faithful interpretation of that work. It was a toy driven mutation that overtook the public perception of the property. If you are the co-creator of something and the version the world embraces barely resembles what you made, that has to create friction.

When Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2003 happened, Laird had far more control. And you can feel it. The 2003 series leans into Mirage storylines, serialized arcs, the Utrom mythology, and a tone that feels much closer to the original comics. It is not humorless, but it is disciplined. It feels like a conscious attempt to realign the brand with its roots.

Here is where I admit my own ambivalence.

I have a lot of nostalgic fondness for the 1987 cartoon. I grew up with it. I can hear that theme song in my head right now. There is a warmth to it that is undeniable. At the same time, I understand the impulse to protect authorial intent. I tend to side with creators who fight to preserve the integrity of their work. I do not usually cheer when corporate branding smooths out the edges of something interesting.

So what do you do when the thing that meant something to you as a kid is the very thing the creator sees as a compromise?

Laird never really played the diplomatic game. He did not retroactively bless every version of the Turtles as equally valid. He was blunt. Sometimes abrasively so. And fandom does not always respond well to that kind of bluntness. Especially when nostalgia is involved.

But nostalgia and authorship are not the same thing.

It is entirely possible to love the 1987 series and still acknowledge that it diverges wildly from the Mirage comics. It is also possible to respect Laird’s insistence that his creation was something darker and stranger than the toy aisle phenomenon it became.

Maybe the discomfort comes from the fact that the audience and the creator fell in love with two different versions of the same property. That is not a moral failing on either side. It is just the strange reality of what happens when an indie comic explodes into a multimedia empire.

I have a great appreciation for people with genuine creative integrity—not just artists, but all those who turn inward for their ideas, expressing actual original thoughts, running with their outlandish inspirations, standing in their own unique truths—often despite a complete lack of acceptance from others!

It can be tough to stay sure and balanced out on the bleeding edge. It can feel absolutely insane. This is normal while waking up to your authentic nature, while letting go of the inhumane structures you’re told to build your entire precious life around. It can feel strange and lonely at first.

But there is complete liberation on the other side. Just hold on a little while longer. Keep releasing all the old emotions and beliefs from your previous life until all but the single truth of your being is burned away.

It might seem easier to just take the regular path. To just consume and regurgitate what already exists. To just take that mood board of stolen art and remix it, or to hide in the safety of preexisting mainstream opinions, trends, and traditions. But that’s not what you’re here to do. And it’s not worth the way your soul gradually erodes away.

Saying no is a skill. For many neurodivergent and disabled creatives, it is also one of the hardest skills to develop — not because of weakness or people-pleasing, but because of how we were conditioned to move through the world.
