At the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, London, there was a wonderful mature specimen of Cotinus obovatus (chittamwood, American smokewood). This large deciduous shrub has rounded leaves that open a purplish-pink and later turn green. In autumn the foliage then produces a display of orange, red and purple.

Smokebush (cotinus)
I love autumn. Although everything is winding down in the garden, there is still beauty, and lots of preparation to do, and hence hope, for the next year. In my garden some of that beauty is provided by this Cotinus tree. It has dark purple leaves in the late spring and summer, which turn red in the autumn. This tree is getting a bit big now and squashing other plants around it, especially a pretty rambling rose. I will give the tree a major prune in January, but am enjoying its impact now.
