The Vancouver School Board (VSB) may be prepared to “welcome” police officers back into schools next week, but it’s not a sentiment that’s shared by all.
On Thursday, the VSB held a press conference to reiterate its commitment to creating “safe, welcoming and inclusive spaces” for its learners, and said the new “reimagined” school liaison officer (SLO) program will advance school safety.
It also presented a new look for the SLOs that includes casual polo shirts, unmarked police vehicles and more discreet firearms.
Even with the lighter visual touch, however, the decision to bring police back into schools has been vigorously opposed by members of the Vancouver Police Department’s African Descent Advisory Committee. Members Sadie Kuehn and Parker Johnson said they’re concerned about potential harm to Black, Indigenous, racialized, queer, and disabled students.
“The (new look) doesn’t address the core issues of having young people — all young people — feel safe,” Kuehn, a former school trustee, told Global News on Friday.

This is exactly the problem with the white centrist approach to dealing with the problems around police. Putting them in new clothes in new cars with "discreet firearms" doesn't do a damn thing to protect people from the violent, oppressive force that is the police.
None of these changes address racial profiling, police brutality, or the fact that marginalized people (rightfully) feel unsafe around cops.

PTW Ever since my two turbulent crisis-fueled encounters with the police I’ve been very icky around police cars and just cops in general… I thought it had gotten a bit better cause for a few days it seemed to have subsided a bit… Now the past two days it has come back full force. Once I spot them (police) my heart starts racing and I get really nervous/tense. I’m currently shaking while sitting in a bus cause I had to walk past police officers in the train station. It’s not that I’m scared of them. Like logically I can see that there’s no reason for me to fear them now… But my body reacts before I even register what’s up… 😶
plot drop: the accident
location: by the scene of the car accident on nye
tl;dr: nathan leaves a house party with a douche, they drive past the accident, nathan calls 911 and makes the douche go back. nathan stands there and is not helpful AT ALL. the end.
The car rumbled over the asphalt, the sound barely audible over Rick’s music. Or was it Rob? Nathan’s head lolled to its side, a lazy grin curving his lip at the sight of Rick-Rob on the driver’s seat. He was handsome and uncomplicated; the perfect kind of no-strings-attached fun Nathan had set out to find that night.
He wondered how Emily was faring. Emily, with her soft lips, who had asked him to be her New Year’s kiss. Emily, who put her hands on either side of his face to pull him down to her, who planted a friendly, almost chaste kiss to his lips. Emily, who hadn’t pulled back when Nathan came back for more, who kissed him back, who didn’t push his hands off her when he pulled her in close, when he took things a bit further, when the treacherous thought of taking things even further than that crossed his mind.
Not that she knew that. Would she hate him if she did? Or would she want to? Would she—
A hand on his thigh pulled him out of his spiraling thoughts, a giggle rumbling in his chest as Rick-Rob flashed him a grin before turning his attention back to the road.
Handsome and uncomplicated, with a great smile to boot. Exactly the kind of person Nathan wanted to start the new year with. He felt giddy and weightless, his vision a bit hazy as he looked out the passenger window and watched the rows of houses and trees roll by. A motorcycle zoomed by, which Nathan ignored. Distantly he thought he heard a screeching of metal, a clattering bang, but chalked it to Rick-Rob’s music, which Nathan now found questionable. He would mention it later, maybe, if he remembered, would tell him his taste in music sucked.
“Woah.”
At the sound of Rick-Rob’s voice, Nathan gave him a questioning glance. He was vaguely aware of the car dropping speed but was quick to register the shock in Rick-Rob’s face as he stared out the windshield. Nathan followed his gaze and drew a sharp breath, eyes widening as the car rolled to a stop.
Ahead of them, basically folded against a light pole, was another vehicle.
“Oh shit.”
Silence filled the cabin, neither knowing what to say. What to do.
“Should we call the cops?”
“No,” Rick-Rob was quick to say. “Someone must’ve heard the crash. They’ve probably already called.”
Nathan hesitated for a second before agreeing.
“Okay.”
It made sense, he thought, pushing down the anxiety that started to knot in his stomach. It was a populated area. There were houses here, houses that slowly started to roll by again as Rick-Rob maneuvered around the accident and kept on driving. Past Iris Road. The intersection at Iris Road. Nathan committed the information to memory, just in case. He thought he saw smoke rising from the scene of the accident in the rearview mirror, but it could be fireworks, or his imagination. Or maybe the car had caught fire and people were trapped inside.
It felt like an eternity had passed as he battled his indecision, but his phone was in his hand before he realized and he was already dialing 911. Rick-Rob didn’t react, not until he heard Nathan say his name to the operator.
“Dude, what are you doing?”
Nathan was too distracted, too focused on stamping down his anxiety to catch the panicked way in which Rick-Rob asked the question. So he answered just as distractedly before he resumed communicating with the operator, relaying information about the accident, the car wrapped around the pole, the location of it as best as he could remember, his words rushed and tinged with panic, all while batting away Rick-Rob’s hands as he tried to reach past Nathan’s hands to pry away his phone.
“Dude, what are you doing?” Nathan demanded as Rick-Rob screeched the car to a halt on the side of the road and reached again for his phone. Nathan pushed him off as he ended the call, kept the phone out of his reach.
An argument ensued, Rick-Rob yelling at Nathan, asking if he was insane, Nathan demanding to know what the hell was wrong with him. Think about it, Rick-Rob said. They were drunk, and high, and driving past the scene of that car accident. The cops would point their fingers at them. They were incompetent and lazy. They would put the blame on Rick-Rob because it was the most convenient explanation. But Nathan didn’t care. He needed to know. He needed to see who was in the car, if they were okay, if they had made it out. There was more yelling, pleading on Nathan’s part, until Rick-Rob relented with a frustrated huff.
Sirens were already wailing in the air, ambulances and police and firetrucks on the way to the scene by the time Rick-Rob came back. The scene had changed in the short while they were gone. The car was horizontal now, there was a fire, and a man was on the side of the road hunched over another body. Another person, Nathan corrected hastily, hating himself for thinking the person already gone.
“I can’t be here,” Rick-Rob reiterated, this time drawing Nathan’s attention to a bag of pills he pulled out of his jeans pocket as the sirens grew nearer.
Asshole.
Nathan grunted, didn't spare him a glance as he unbuckled his seatbelt and stumbled out of the car. Outside, people were already coming out of their homes, drawn by the sound of the crash, the rising smoke of the fire, the nearing sirens. Nathan didn’t see Rick-Rob drive off, he was only aware of the man on the road, doing chest compressions and calling what Nathan could almost make out as Aggie’s name.
No.
Denial took hold of him immediately.
It was not Aggie.
She was blonde. That person was not.
Still, he should help.
Nathan stumbled forward to do just that, the weightlessness he had enjoyed earlier now making him feel lost and untethered. He had to get a better look at the scene, to confirm that his ears were playing tricks on him, that it wasn’t Aggie. The sound of the sirens felt like they were in his head now, their flashing lights obstructing his vision.
That was not Aggie. It couldn’t be.
There was a commotion, tires screeching to a halt, doors slamming shut, people yelling and uniforms moving, directing people back into their homes, approaching the man (Maddox?) and not-Aggie with emergency equipment.
“Go back inside!”
A hand tugged roughly at his shoulder, making Nathan stumble.
“I don’t live here,” Nathan managed to push past the tightness in his throat. “I called you,” he said, staring past the uniform that kept pushing him back, away from the accident.
“You called it in?” the uniform asked, but Nathan wasn’t looking at them.
“Yes. Yes.” Paramedics approached the pair at the crash, pulling maybe-Maddox back and focusing their efforts on not-Aggie. “How are they? Are they okay? Is it Aggie?” Nathan craned his neck, trying to get a better look. “Is it Aggie?” he asked, raising his voice, but nobody answered. The uniform kept backing him away from the scene and blocked his view.
His heel backed into the curb and he lost his balance, the uniform holding him by the shoulders and guiding him to the ground. “Sit! Wait here.” Nathan flopped onto his ass, eyes vacant as he stared at uniforms managing the gathering crowd, taking control of the scene.
“Someone will be here to talk to you shortly,” the uniform said to Nathan, who nodded dumbly. The uniform gave Nathan’s shoulder a squeeze and a tight smile that Nathan assumed was meant to be reassuring. “It’s going to be okay, but I need you to stay here. Can you do that for me?”
“Yes. Okay.” His response was delayed, as if it took him a second to even process the question. With a tight nod, the uniform strode off and returned to the scene, leaving Nathan on the side of the road to watch the whole thing unfold with only one thought looping in his head.
Went to a smaller town's pride event tonight with some friends and had a good time but then when we were walking back to the train station, we saw a bit of a fight happen. I called 112 (911) and it was scary. Everyone just complimented me on how impressively I handled it all and I KNOW I'm good (great, even) in these situations.
But damn. The adrenaline is a bitch & probably dissociation as well tbh because at the flip of a switch I turn into the most sober and organized bitch in these moments and the few times it happened it always kinda seems to shock (positively) the people I'm with.
Now it's 1:30am and I only just got home and how the fuck am I supposed to sleep. My plans for tomorrow got cancelled which I was sad about but I think it a good thing now. Empty day for myself tomorrow.
I am so exhausted and so wide awake at the same time. Ugh. Also these cops were assholes and I'm so mad about it. Also I hope the person who was hurt will be alright. It sucks to know I'll never know.
