Tafakkur (reflection) is a neglected worship in Islam. We are ordered to make tafakkur, contemplate, meditate and focus on everything that Allah created in this universe and see the Greatness of Allah (Subhana Wa TA’Ala). The Prophet ﷺ said, “I have been sent for that, to bring that noor [light] that is inside you out, into appearance!” اللَّهُ نُورُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ مَثَلُ نُورِهِ كَمِشْكَاةٍ فِيهَا مِصْبَاحٌ Allah is the Light of the Heavens and Earth. (Surat an-Noor, 24:35) The focus is on the light. Without the light, there is darkness, as light makes everything shine. If no light, darkness appears. So the light is in meditating, in tafakkur, in thinking, and in order to do that you have to strengthen your belief, you have to try to do what Allah (Subhana Wa TA’Ala) wants you to do. The whole focus of the Prophet’s ﷺ message is tahdheeb al-akhlaaq [Islamic manners], to polish and improve the characters of a human being, and characters cannot be improved without rohaniyaat [spirituality], without this feeling of meditation, thinking about Allah Subhana Wa TA’Ala’s Greatness. You cannot make tafakkur directly to Allah (Subhana Wa TA’Ala); leave that as that is a ghaybu ‘l-mutlaq, the Absolute Hidden. No one can know the Reality of Allah’s Essence. You only know Allah through His Beautiful Names and Attributes and through His Creation. Look at people around you.
