Seeking status through possessions is a rather pathetic mechanism. It's difficult to live a life wanting to impress others with every purchase. Yet that's how we all treat what we surround ourselves with.

So how does one weaken this tendency? It can simply be eradicated. The desire for status is part of human biology. Trying to eliminate it completely becomes another status project, where one becomes proud of being "above materialism."

Instead, the more realistic approach is to understand the mechanism while it is happening. When you suddenly want an expensive object, ask yourself what your nervous system believes it will achieve. Will it increase comfort? Will it save time? Will it genuinely enrich your life? Or is your brain quietly predicting something else, such as admiration, security, importance, or protection from insignificance? Very often, if you stay with that question, the object begins to lose some of its emotional glow. The idea to possess it for this reason is funny. You start seeing that you do not really want the watch. You want the feeling your brain predicts the watch will produce.

Your body does not need luxury. It needs food, movement, rest, warmth, novelty, competence, relationships, curiosity, and meaningful activity. Once those needs are reasonably met, the nervous system becomes less desperate to seek symbolic substitutes and you won't need to run around with sales like a dog with a bone. This does not mean becoming an ascetic. There is nothing wrong with enjoying beautiful clothes, a well-designed home, or a good car. The difference lies in whether the object is serving your life or whether your identity is leaning on the object.

Spinoza's insight is relevant here. He wrote that people mistake external goods for genuine increases in their power to live. External goods can certainly be useful, but they are unstable. They can be lost. Knowledge, understanding, skill, and character increase your capacity more reliably because they become part of how you interact with the world rather than decorations attached to you. Here is a simple test. Imagine buying something expensive that nobody would ever know you owned. If much of the desire disappears, then a large part of the purchase was probably directed toward social status rather than the object itself.
