Compositional Study for "The Hours" Mural, Oil on Canvas (ca. 1909–1911)
American Academic artist Edwin Austin Abbey (1852–1911) created this circular oil on canvas as a full-scale compositional study for The Hours mural at the Pennsylvania State Capitol. This mural was Abbey's last commission. It features a 24-foot astronomical ceiling and serves as an allegory of time's passage. It portrays the Horae, Greek goddesses of seasons and time, set like numbers on a clock. Loc. Yale University Art Gallery. Dim. 381 cm (150 in) diameter.
