Wind: Could you tell me something about the fae's ability to charm, enchant, compel, etc. others?
Have you ever been to a masquerade? Not a party with silly paper hats and lots of glitter and a few wearing flimsy party masks while they spin to a loud tasteless song. Have you ever seen a real masquerade? A great area or hall lit with lanterns, an orchestra plays an enchanting waltz, and the revelers move in concert as if rehearsed. Each person wears a mask carefully crafted for them. Animals, grotesques, jesters, harlequins, and many more. Gowns and robes and cloaks of vibrant colors swish and swirl in the golden light and the swift shadows.
Do you have that image in your mind? Good. Keep it there.
There are many kinds of Faerie magic that you might come across in the world. Out of these, Glamour is the most common. If we were to take a simple party with paper hats and glitter and cast a Glamour over it, we could make it appear to all senses as if it truly were as wonderful as a masquerade could be. The food could be moldy and the costumes merely rags and you might never know the difference.
But there are other magics. Imagine you have a human in this party of Fae Folk. You want them to dance. There are three ways you might do such a thing. You could place a glamour on them, fool their minds into forgetting who they are and what they want and remembering only what you want. But while most cannot resist the power of a Glamour, some can keep themselves and the Glamour is simply shattered.
Another method might be to enchant them. An enchantment is to place a spell of very specific guidelines upon a person or thing. Enchant them so that they dance until their shoes are worn through, or turn them into a musical frog to sing until someone kisses them back to their true form. Enchantments can change a thing, but not forever.
The third way you could force a human to dance would be to compel them. Force their body to follow your command despite their mind’s resistance. This can be very dangerous as the mind of the human might break from the force of too strong a compulsion. Humans can be fragile creatures, not all are prepared for such magic.
But such magics can be very direct compared to older spells. Some of the Folk believe that magic will take all the fun out of things and simply ask you to dance. Weaving words and meanings may not always be magic, but it can be just as powerful when you don’t know what you are agreeing to or if you are agreeing at all. You might find yourself dancing without ever having intended to say yes.
