Hebrews 11:4 (ESV) - By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks
...ah
There has been much said about the italicized oh. And for good reason! There is much that can be done in a story with it, and we as a society have codified much of it in very interesting ways. But I would like to draw attention to another interjection that can be just as important at signifying a pivotal change in the emotional readout of a piece, and in much the same way. Oh is often used for a quiet but intense, usually internal realization. Often about what the viewpoint character’s feelings are towards another. ...ah then, implies a different emotional shift, one where the character’s realization is about the external world and not their own feelings. It marks the point where they understand their or someone else’s true situation, where miscommunications and barriers break down. It is the moment in which their perspective shifts, and with it gives them a chance to alter their trajectory. It is not a noticing of an automatic shift of the heart, but an opportunity for a manual one. This is when our characters see the impact of their actions, correct a misapprehension about another’s motives, shift the tone of the story, realign their objectives. The ellipse’d ah is an important part of our literary framework, and it deserves recognition for its service.
