Janky Combos
Was bored last night and decided to sort some cards in my collection. While shuffling thru countless piles and getting frustrated, I found a tiny gem at the bottom of my “untap” commander pile for Derevi. A precious, but overlooked diamond in the ruff.... Village Bell-Ringing!... Okay hear me out now! What if I told you, we could break this simple but efficient card. And use it in a deck that already cares about untapping stuff. If we throw it in our deck and pull the combo off, we just insta win! If not, we have a utility creature that untaps all other creatures when it enters the battlefield and we still have other combos to work off as well. So let’s dive in!
1) Begin with Somberwald Sage on the battlefield with Fallowsage. Cast Banishing Knack or Retraction Helix on Fallowsage and then tap Somberwald Sage for 3 white mana.
2) Flash in or regular cast Village Bell-Ringer with the 3 white mana, using his EtB to untap the Somberwald Sage. Now tap Fallowsage, using the Knack/Helix ability to return the Bell-Ringer back to your hand while drawing a card off Fallowsage’s tap->draw ability.
3) Tap Somberwald for 3 white mana again, and use that mana to recast Bell-Ringer, untapping Somberwald and Fallowsage. You have now created a controlled loop for this one turn.
Using this combo we can pretty much draw thru our whole deck for our win cons or answers to problems. Now Fallowsage is only one creature that loves to be tapped and untapped repeatedly. Using cards like Stonybrook Schoolmaster we can create infinite Merfolk tokens, Judge of Currents can gain you infinite life, and Wake Thrasher can grow infinitely large.
If we throw in some monuments, Oketra’s Monument can also produce a limitless supply of 1/1 warrior tokens and Rhonas’s Monument can pump a finisher or whole board up to the heavens. Not to mention the reduced cost of creature spells will make Bell-Ringer cheaper, but the mana left over can only be used for creature spells and will most likely be only white mana. Speaking of mana tho...
Village Bell-Ringer’s ability says it untaps all creatures you control when it EtBs, so why not abuse this? We’re already throwing this guy in a tap matters deck, let’s use some mana dorks and fellow tap/untappers!
Using Fate Stitcher we can fully tap down our opponent’s board for an all in swing. Cards like Kiora’s Follower, Voyaging Satyr and other permanent/land untap creatures can create infinite mana along side our main combo to keep the gas going. Mana dorks that can tap for mana before we cast Bell-Ringer will net us large amounts of mana as well.
I just threw this card in for funzies, but imagine the look on your opponents face when you spend 8 mana to cast a beastly Spawning Grounds, they laugh, and then next turn you pull off the Bell-Ringer combo, using Voyaging Satyr to untap this land for a 5/5 beast token with trample every time you loop thru. If they don’t have a board wipe or answer to the issue, you win on the spot next turn (assuming you don’t have haste enablers.)
Know of any other cool untap combos I missed? Let me know! This is a safe place here, we don’t discriminate against Jank <3
