the collared falconet is a small bird of prey found in the indian subcontinent. they are incredibly small for a predatory bird, yet bring down relatively large prey animals such as birds and rodents. their noticeable orange chin patch and underside distinguish them from similar species. x

February 23, 2016 -Â Collared Falconet (Microhierax caerulescens)
Found in deciduous and evergreen forests of the Himalayas and Southeast Asia, these small falcons are five to seven inches (14-18 cm) long. They mostly eat large insects, including butterflies and moths, and possibly some small birds. Their hunting behavior is similar to shrikes and flycatchers, as they catch their prey in short flights from a perch. Nesting in tree cavities made by woodpeckers or barbets, females probably do most of the incubation. Pairs aggressively defend their nests.

Collared Falconet - Microhierax caerulescens
The five recognized species of Microhierax falconets (Falconidae) are the smallest raptors in the world and show no obvious sexual size or plumage dimorphism. The five species have Asian distribution, from northeast India through Southeast Asia, but they are poorly known.
Field observations have shown that Collared falconets, Microhierax caerulescens, exhibit cooperative hunting and breeding in which chicks are attended by adults birds, males and females.  The chicks are feed directly at the nest either by the males or by the breeding female. This species, being very small (the maximum size of these raptors is up to 18 cm), specializes in insects, which are captured mainly on the wing, either in flight or plucked from the foliage.
