At Madingley Hall, Cambridge, UK, the Corylus avellana (hazel, cobnut, common filbert) are being pruned to remove older stems. The plants are trained to make a spectacular covered walk. At this time of year the large, spreading deciduous shrubs are sheltering Galanthus nivalis (snowdrops) and Eranthis hyemalis (winter aconite).
