Undressing never looked so good. - . The main attraction is the kilim cloth started in August, and held up by hopping on the leftover warp. I love working with vintage yarns; all the Shetland, Icelandic and warp yarns are as old or older than I am. The stories they could tell. . To be finished on my Singer handcrank before Christmas. Fingers crossed. Black History Month Starts Today: 3 NMAA Picks
There are multiple exhibits at the Smithsonian museums during February celebrating Black History Month, or which focus on African and African-Americans artists, and I will definitely post again as the month goes on, but National Museum of African Art has some pretty cool events:
Artists in Dialogue II (February 5th at 1pm, Free) features South African artist Sandile Zulu and Brazilian artist Henrique Oliviera discussing their shared exhibition which includes a collaborative and original site-specific work. Although there are no details on what the work is, having looked at Oliviera’s fantastical “tridimensional” tunnels and Zulu’s organic “pyromantic” constructions this could be one wild and mindblowing show!
Africa Underground, a takeoff of Asia After Dark, (February 18th from 7-11pm, $18 in advance/$20 at the door), features samba, African beer and performances by DJs Adrian Loving and Munch.
Adire Clothmaking workshop (February 26th from 1-3pm, Free but need a reservation). Although advertised for children, learning how to dye indigo adire cloth, as the Yoruba of southwest Nigeria do, sounds like fun.
