Fragments of memories woven from landscapes, as depicted by Robert Platt.

The artificial materials haphazardly sprang up by humanity and the unimaginable amount of nature that covered this planet even before the birth of humankind—these two forces clash, sometimes weaving together vivid encounters that could only be described as a meeting.
Robert Platt's world is mysterious yet exudes an endlessly pure presence. He was born in the suburbs of London and spent his childhood in a rural area surrounded by nature. He was greatly inspired by the plains, animals, land, and sea he encountered during that time, and at the same time, he was fascinated by the phenomenon of the city, which is composed of artificial things that are in stark contrast to these things. The landscapes he paints seem to depict the conflict between these opposing materials,
It takes on a vibrant, utopian color palette. Like layers upon layers, organic and artificial elements fill a single canvas, and the objects that were previously in opposition to each other are brought to light in their true, original forms.
I first saw his work in 2004. I was instantly captivated by his paintings covering entire walls. The canvases contained both nature and man-made objects, seemingly clashing and yet coexisting. The boundless landscapes captured by Platt, as seen in his work, seem to represent the past, present, and future beyond Robert's time. He meticulously weaves together and reconstructs the diverse memories of the landscape, almost as if creating a collage.
It continues. Fragments of memories, like a prism, are gently connected through a filter called Platt. His works are mysterious, like chimeras, and give an impression of boundless purity.
He currently has a studio in Kyoto, where he creates his works day by day. By immersing himself in a remote location, he breaks down formal thinking and weaves the unique visuals and experiences he gains there onto the canvas. We invite you to witness firsthand his inner landscapes, depicted with a unique concept rarely seen in the art scene until now. He is scheduled to hold a solo exhibition at Kyoto MUZZ PROGRAM SPACE in early 2009.
