Hi there, I made this because a bunch of us are excited for Daggerbound coming out soon. The Idea of a "refresher read" Is to skim over the books to jog our memories of the world of the White Rat. There's no obligation to read all books in 5 weeks. Feel free to use it yourself, or join us on the Temple of the White Rat Discord server :) https://discord.gg/nX8rRfNuA
book review for Clockwork Boys by T. Kingfisher
song: STFU! by Rina Sawayama https://open.qobuz.com/track/84075865
spoilers ahead
Whatever possessed Kingfisher when she was writing What Moves the Dead must have been exorcised out of her because how has every single book I've read since that has been trash?
The way the "romance" and/or lust is shoved down your throat. Chapter 4, I fucking quote "The sexual tension in the room kicked up several notches." said only because man + woman + man says he's not sworn to celibacy = sex. Thanks for telling me that because I couldn't see it lmao. (also no the hell it didn't…). The way that immediately after being saved by Caliban she suddenly wants to fuck him (and gets embarrassed when he rejects the advances, then gets mad when he explains that he didn't think she was in her right mind then.) Also, I put it out of my memory actually so fucking fast it should be studied. The main character, Slate, yk, literally thinks to herself… it pains me to type this… "raowr" when she sees Caliban after he's cleaned up. Girl…
The way that these assholes are in their goddamn THIRTIES!!!! and acting like high schoolers!? If I wanted to read stilted high school lovers, I'd go read that… these are full grown adults acting like this, which gave me so much second hand embarrassment even writing this review I still feel it. None of the characters are likeable. Sometimes I want to give the benefit of the doubt and say, maybe they aren't supposed to be, but I shouldn't really do that every single time the characters are unlikeable lol.
Brenner is a jealous high schooler- I mean 30+ year old man who is still hung up on Slate, he also reads as incredibly edgy. Caliban is a jealous high schooler- I mean 30+ year old man who wants to fuck Slate after two weeks and they fight over her like 16 year olds. Slate is just… there. I guess. The more I think about it the more she seems like a blank….slate…. who also doesn't act like a… oh I've said it multiple times. Also the sexist kid, forgot his name. I clocked it immediately that he was going to be cool with Slate first page we see him. He's 19, and at least he actually does act his age LMAOOO
That's literally the only thing I can say about the book. Everything else is underwhelming and forgettable, and it doesn't help that this is a novella that is ONLY a set up for the second book. I sure hope it was the publisher who made such a dumbass decision and not Kingfisher, but wow that was a bad idea to separate them.
I really respect T. Kingfisher/Ursula Vernon for looking at Dragon Age and going “I can do better paladin/knight romances”. And then proceeding to write 7 books (and counting) on the matter.
✨ DUOLOGY REVIEW ✨
Clocktaur War by T Kingfisher
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25

The Clockwork Boys: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Wonder Engine: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Thanks so much to Simon & Schuster Australia for providing me with a copy of The Wonder Engine. All thoughts are my own.
This was such a great duology and I’m so happy to have finally read it!
I became so attached to these characters over the course of these books. It’s such a strange mix of people, but they all found a place in my heart by the end and I definitely shed a few tears with all the goodbyes.
The clocktaurs and the wonder engines were such fascinating concepts and I was so engaged in the investigation into them, far more than I would have expected to be. Learned Edmund’s enthusiasm for learning was contagious and endearing.
I loved the romance between Slate and Caliban. It was frustrating at times, but incredibly realistic and the tension was palpable.
Grimehug and the gnoles were some of my favourite parts of this book and I hope I get to meet more gnoles as I read through more books set in this world!

Been a fan of T. Kingfisher's writing for a while but somehow missed the books set in The World of the White Ray universe until last week. I did it out of order because of course I did, starting with Paladin's Grace from Saint of Steel... It was supposed to be vacation reading but I finished it before we left and started on the second book. So now a handful of days later I just finished The Wonder Engine and am OBSESSED. I was so glad that I still have Swordheart right now, Daggerbound this summer, and eventually three more Saint of Steel books, but also bereft because I literally just finished and desperately miss the characters I've already said goodbye to. Gaaaaaaaah I just want to squeeze everyone in the books.
The fifth book of 2026 is Clockwork Boys by T Kingfisher ⚙️
I swear this author never misses, I have already put part two of this duology on reservation at the library, it was such a good adventure!
