âOh my god!â Clary exclaimed from somewhere beyond the large pieces of furniture blocking Izzyâs view. âIzzy! You have to see this!â Clary screamed again, lessening Izzyâs worry only marginally.Â
âI have to find you first, babe,â Izzy grumbled, stepping through a line of dressers and hutches topped with trinkets that she thought would be way too easy to steal. She would never understand places like that.Â
She loved Clary, she really really did, but her new obsession with thrifting was getting out of hand. Izzy had a hard enough time keeping track of Clary in wide open spaces, let alone a shop filled with eye-catching objects that were sure to gather her girlfriendâs attention. Their new home was also suddenly overrun with ridiculous wall hangings and furniture Clary would spend hours working on only to get attached and refuse to sell it like she had planned.Â
When she finally turned the corner where Claryâs voice had come from, the brightness of the neon signs seemed to envelop her girlfriend in a colorful glow that made her look even more beautiful than she always was. Angelic was the only word that Izzy could think of to describe her at that moment. She had the biggest grin on her face and excitement bubbled outwardly through her like she had just landed in her place of joy.Â
âThese are amazing, Iz. We could totallyââ
âClary, no,â Izzy said sternly.Â
âButââ
âNo buts! We are out of wall space and nothing here looks even remotely like it would fit the theme of the rest of our house,â Izzy argued.Â
âYouâre saying weâre not going to lastâŠâ Clary ran her hand over one sign as she finished, âforever.âÂ
âBabe.â Izzy made her tone serious as Clary gestured at another sign.Â
âCome on, mi amour. Donât some of these turn youâŠâ She held up a bright yellow sign and wiggled her eyebrows as she read, âOn.âÂ
âClary, please,â Izzy begged, trying to remain stern, but her girlfriendâs antics were too adorable for her to stay frustrated.Â
âAt least let us get this one. Itâs perfect.â She put down the yellow sign and picked up a flashing red out that said Girls Girls Girls, and Izzy lost it.Â
âYouâre the worst,â she said through her laughter, pulling Clary in for a passionate kiss to try and stifle both of their giggles as the shop owner rounded the corner suspiciously.Â
âSee anything you like?â They asked, crossing their arms over their chest and gesturing at the wide array of options.Â
âWhat about this one?â Clary asked, running her fingers over the neon wedding chapel sign that definitely belonged to an Elvis impersonator, Las Vegas type business. She wiggled her eyebrows at Izzy, clearly expressing her interest in taking the next step in their relationship.Â
âYouâre incorrigible,â Izzy said, tugging Izzy out of the shop quickly.Â
The weight of the sparkling emerald ring she had found a few paces away from those signs was heavy in her pocket.

33. âI love seeing you smile.â
Some lovely femslash for you Em, because how could I not? Ily!!
âIsabelle!â
Izzy presses her lips together to stifle the smile that starts to grow wider on her face. She doesnât turn to look over at Clary but she can picture her standing at the other end of the room, arms crossed and brows furrowed.
Clary had called Izzy up last night asking if sheâd be her model for one of her art assignments. Izzy, being the good girlfriend that she is, had agreed.
She had thought sheâd get to spend the three hours watching Clary in her element. It was one of her favorite things to do. Clary always gets lost in the art, humming to herself and biting her lip in a way that makes Izzy want to watch her for days on end. Sheâd thought modeling would be no problem. Sheâd get to watch Clary for hours without interruption. Sheâd even been a little bit excited.
The reality is this: Clary has instructed Izzy to stare out the window and not move. Izzy is not very good at following instructions.
âNo moving!â
Izzy turns her head and is met with exactly what sheâd been expecting.
Clary raises her eyebrows at Izzy, a threatening piece of charcoal in her hand and stray curls falling in her eyes. âI said no moving.â
âYouâre cute when youâre bossy.â
Clary puts down the piece of charcoal and walks over to where Izzy is sitting. âThen Iâm about to be real cute.â
Izzy laughs as Clary tries to reposition her on the stool, hands warm against Izzyâs skin.
âThere,â Clary announces, eyes wandering Izzyâs body and then smiling. Izzy smiles back at her, starting to laugh again when Clary glares at her.
âIz,â she says sternly, tone completely at odds with the way she lets Izzy pull her closer by the waist, âyou know I love seeing you smile,â she waves behind her at the art supplies scattered on the counter, âbut thatâs kind of not what I was going for here.â
Izzy bites back a grin when Claryâs arms come up to wrap around her neck. She leans closer into Claryâs space, watching the way Claryâs lashes flutter as they follow her.
âAre you saying that Iâm ruining your artistic vision?â she asks.
âYou could say that.â
Izzy hums, gently tucking a curl behind Claryâs ear. âIn that case, I require one payment and then you have my full cooperation.â
âWhat would that be?â Clary asks with a knowing smile.
Her eyes are already on Izzyâs lips when Izzy replies. âA kiss.â
Clary kisses her. Once on the lips, on both cheeks, and then finally her forehead. Izzy can only barely contain the affection that burns bright in her chest. Clary watches her with bright, open fondness for a long moment.
âNow,â Clary says, breaking the moment by stepping away from Izzy, âlook sexily out the window so I donât fail this assignment.â
Izzy laughs and then salutes at Clary. âYes maâam.â

· âAlec... theyâre grown ups... as much as you donât want to admit it.â
Magnus groans, back feeling like hell. He lifts himself up and immediately falls off the couch landing directly on his back onto a stack of red solo cups.
âFuck,â he shouts out as he rolls to the side to lift himself up, a party mask on a stick digging into his side.
âStop being so loud,â a female voice he knows well grumbles from above. Magnus finally lifts himself up into a sitting position to see Isabelle lying face down surrounded by a nest of multi colored feather boas on the couch opposite the one heâd just fallen from.
Magnus finds the inner strength to stand looking around the room. Itâs his apartment, not that he remembers coming home at all, and itâs a wreck. Cups, half empty bottles of liquor and an array of party favors from the eveningâs festivities cover every surface. His paintings on the walls are crooked, the strip of photobooth pictures that he and Alec had taken on their trip to Tokyo for their one-month anniversary are sitting sadly in a puddle of something. He walks over squinting his eyes against the sunlight streaming in and pics up the photo strip shaking them out best he can.
He sniffs them confirming the liquid to be vodka and not something worse. He pins them back up on the corkboard where they belong smiling at the happy looks on their faces despite the fact his head feels like thereâs a tiny gnome with a hatchet running around inside of it. Â
Isabelle shifts on the couch lying on her back now.
âDid we die?â she asks eyes still closed.
âUnfortunately not,â Magnus says picking up a pink cowboy hat from the chair nearest to him and plopping down into it heavily.
âWhat time is it?â she asks pulling a few of the feather boas around her like a blanket.
Magnus looks down at his watch about to answer when his bedroom door suddenly slams open. A flash of long red hair streaks across the apartment headed straight for the bathroom.
The bathroom door swings open a moment later, Alec steps out looking disheveled as hell wearing a Hunterâs moon t-shirt he definitely hadnât been wearing when the night before had started.
Alec sits down heavily on the couch beside his sister patting her on the shoulder. She nods, takes a deep breath and centers herself standing up slowly. This time she makes it picking her way through the trash littering the floor her 8-inch heels somehow still secured to her feet.
âYour weddings in like four hours, just a reminder!â Magnus shouts and wishes he hadnât. Judging from the way Alec plugs his ears and Izzy flips him off no one else does either. Hangovers all around it seems, a sign of a good bachelorette party.
Magnus listens for a few moments to Isabelle softly reassuring Clary, heels clicking on the tile of the bathroom floor. He looks over at his boyfriend once again heaving himself to stand and flop down beside him on the bed of boas.
âGood morning baby,â Alec grumbles lifting his arm and wrapping it around Magnusâ shoulders. Magnus hums reaching up and entangling his fingers with Alecâs. He shifts enough to toss his legs over Alecâs and looks down noticing a piece of white paper sticking out from his pocket.
He raises his eyebrows leaning back enough to pull the paper from his pocket. He unfolds it and practically jolts up from the couch. In looping script that looks like Isabelleâs is his name and what appears to be one half of a marriage license.
âUmmm Magnus!â Isabelle yells rushing out of the bathroom and directly to them on the couch. Alec shifts seemingly having fallen back asleep. She shakes a piece of paper in his face almost identical to his half. âThis was in MY pocket.â
Magnus takes it from her lining it up with his. A piece of the full sheet is still missing only the last name Lightwood on Isabelleâs section the first name missing. She falls beside him seeing the almost full document.
âThereâs no way,â he says laughing nervously. Thereâs no way.
Isabelle is just as alert as he in now, eyes in a panic. Alec sits up taking off his sunglasses. He looks from the papers to Magnusâs eyes, his eyes just as wide as his sisters.
âI also have this,â she says holding up her left hand revealing a diamond band on her thumb. âItâs stuck.â
âThatâs one of mine,â Magnus says looking down at one of his empty fingers. âOh, shit thatâs one of mine.â
Alec falls back into the couch, no longer pressed into Magnusâ side.
âOh my god, oh my god, oh my god,â Isabelle says dropping her head into her hands.
Clary comes out of the bathroom, eye makeup resembling a raccoon with a huge bottle of mouth wash in her hands. Chairman Meow appears circling around her socked feet trying to trip her up, she takes it in stride and steps over him easily. Â
âJust in case,â she says when she notices Alec judging the bottle. âSo, Iâm guessing from those repetitive oh my gods itâs not us that got married last night.â
âNo,â Isabelle moans dramatically throwing herself on the ground, arms tossed over her eyes. âI married my brotherâs boyfriend probably as a dumb joke or something the night before my wedding. Jace will never let me live this down.â
âWe donât know that. It just says Lightwood, it could be us!â Magnus argues looking at his boyfriend uncertainly. Alec looks a little bit like a deer in the headlights so Magnus scrambles. Heâs not really sure whatâs the better option: accidentally marrying your boyfriend of two months in a drunken stupor or marrying your boyfriendâs sister as a joke in a drunken stupor. At least he hopes it was a dumb joke if itâs the latter, the former well heâs not sure if he and Alec are ready to get into that no matter how quickly their relationship has progressed. âOr you know itâs fake, fake is an option.â
Clary steps over inspecting the paper.
âPaperâs too high quality for a fake,â she shrugs sitting down on the coffee table. Magnus gives her a pointed look, making it clear sheâs not helping this situation.
The four of them sit there silently for a while. Alec is the first to speak up.
âOkay, what does everyone remember from last night? Letâs piece this together,â he says reasonably opening the floor to whoever wants to start.
It takes about twenty minutes but they get a vague timeline from memory and other evidence pulled from their pockets. They scour the apartment as they talk making hangover remedies while desperately searching for the missing piece of the license.
So far theyâve determined things started here, pre-gaming with cocktails and dinner then it was the Hunterâs Moon where Magnus absolutely demolished Alec in a series of pool games. Thatâs when Alec lost his shirt as well, a beer spilled on him by Jace whoâd already had far too much to drink. Magnus had forgotten the detail, but Alec recalls it with annoyed clarity.
After the Hunterâs Moon, Jace had been sent home in a cab, Maia, Bat and the rest of their friends had come along with them to Pandemonium and that was where things got blurry. By 11:30 their friends had all called it a night, but the four of them had hit the dancefloor. Dancing then turned into competition when Izzy had challenged Magnus and Alec to a coupleâs tequila shot off. Magnus assumes they won considering how Clary handles her liquor.
Then it all goes well and truly blank for them all. Claryâs phone is missing entirely, Alecâs is dead and seemingly has been since at least midnight. Izzyâs phone is just a series of back and forth drunken texts with Jace that are increasingly sarcastic and misspelled.
Magnus is the only one with a possible lead. Thereâs evidence of a Lyft being called that took them to the venue where Izzy and Clary are getting married in mere hours and a 15-minute call with Raphael somewhere around one in the morning.
Magnus dials his number immediately hoping for answers.
âYou asked me to go through the whole ceremony,â Raphael says after five minutes of making fun of them all. Magnusâ childhood best friend never did finish the process of becoming a full-blown preacher, not finding it for him in the end, but heâs ordained for weddings and had happily offered to do the ceremony when Clary and Izzy still hadnât found someone two weeks before.
âWhy?â the four ask in frustrated unison.
âDios, I donât know. You were all trashed but you insisted, so to get you to leave me alone because some of us who are involved in this wedding wanted to get a good nightâs rest, I went through the whole thing, start to finish,â he explains.
âDid vows get exchanged or anything?â Alec asks.
âNot really, but you did all say âI doâ at some point I couldnât tell who though, Iâm pretty sure you were all outside,â Raphael answers. âWhich in theory I guess would mean someone got married, but not that it matters I mean ordained or not without a license itâs not legally binding.â
They all sigh.
âThatâs the problem,â Magnus grumbles. They end the call after that saying goodbyes and see you soons.
âAlright,â Alec says sounding the level headed big brother and leader he always is. âHereâs the planâ everyone needs to shower first. Weâre short on time so that means couples, no funny business though. Raphael said we were outside, so that probably means we couldnât get into the venue when we decided to go. Magnus and I can ask around while the two of you get ready since we have to be there anyways.â
Everyone nods their heads in agreement.
âAnd what do we do if it was us that got married?â Magnus asks gesturing between him and Izzy.
Theyâre all silent. Clary is the first to pipe up, taking this whole situation surprisingly well. Maybe throwing up half of oneâs body weight brings clarity.
âI mean only the four of us saw it, it hasnât been officially filed, just signed and if we give Raphael permission to mock us about it for the rest of our lives he wonât say anything,â she reasons.
She grabs Izzyâs hand pulling her to the shower leaving no room for argument.
Magnus blows out a long breath leaning against the kitchen counter where theyâd all gathered. Alec joins him, crossing his arms.
âAre you mad I may have accidentally married your sister?â Magnus says quietly.
Alec snorts.
âNo, we were all beyond drunk last night and knowing you and Izzy it was some competitive dare that went a step too far.â
Magnus chuckles, that does sound like them.
âAnd what if,â he pauses a little worried. âWhat if it was us that accidentally got married?â
Alec turns reaching up to pull a piece of confetti from Magnusâ hair. His hand slides down brushing Magnusâ cheek.
âThen we got married,â he shrugs.
Isabelleâs phone rings breaking the moment, on today of all days heâs fairly certain sheâd appreciate them picking it up. Itâs the caterer and the call takes long enough that he and Alec have barely five minutes for a shared shower before calling a cab to get to the venue. They donât get to talk about Alecâs casual shrug about them being married like it wouldnât be a big deal.
Once theyâre at the venue people start filing in Maryse and Maia take charge of Isabelle while Clary is drifted away by Simon and Jace. They both lock eyes with Magnus and Alec trusting them to get answers or burn the pieces of marriage license before the days over.
Alec is the first to be fully ready so he heads around to ask the staff some questions. He eventually is led to the night security guard who simply shrugs saying heâd fallen asleep on the job. The only evidence that they were even there is in the form of Magnusâ Lyft history and a feather boa exactly like the ones in Magnusâ apartment tangled in a bush outside. Alec sends him a picture of it attached with the message, âI have a feeling weâre going to be finding these around New York for the rest of the year.â
Everything goes by in a rush after that. Magnus never gets the chance to bring up anything to Alec as they take their places as groomsmen.
The wedding is beautiful, Raphael does an excellent job so much so that Claryâs stepdad bursts into tears only two lines in. Clary and Izzy exchange vows that make everyone else cry and Izzy dips Clary as they kiss to everyoneâs delight. They look the happiest theyâve ever been, clearly no longer thinking about the possible mistake marriage that was.
Magnus however canât think of anything else. The sun has fallen and the cake has been cut by the time he gets a moment alone with Alec. He steps outside for some fresh air just beside the bushes where the feather boa still flaps in the wind and Alec slips out behind him. Two long arms wrap around his waist and Magnus leans back into a strong chest.
They stand there quietly, the muffled sound of music behind them.
âYou know,â Magnus says eventually. âYou were pretty casual about the concept of us being accidentally married this morning.â
Alec once again the picture of nonchalance just shrugs.
âI mean at first it was a lot, but once the worst of the hangover subsided I realized if it was us well, thatâs not the worst thing. I love you; I have intentions to be with you for as long as youâll have me so that works.â
Magnus shifts so that Alec is standing in front of him eyes a little glassy. Alec takes the tears to be a bad thing.
âI get it though if itâs way too soon to be thinking or saying anything like that, or,â Alec freezes as Magnus puts a finger in front of his lips.
âI feel the same way,â he smiles. âI mean itâs not ideal and like Clary said itâs not official till itâs filed, but I do feel the same way. I have no doubt in my mind weâre heading that way one day.â
Alec smiles kissing the tip of Magnusâ finger where it still rests against his lips. He pulls Magnus into a hug. Magnus rests his chin on Alecâs shoulder eyes still open and thatâs when he spots it. The feather boa shifts in the wind and a small white piece of paper is revealed skewered on the prickly end of the bush.
He pulls back from Alec leaping down the two small steps to pick the piece of paper from the bush.
âWell Iâll be damned,â he says snatching up the sliver of paper and flipping it over. The missing piece of the license. Alec steps over, joining him.
âIs that?â he starts looking over Magnusâ shoulder.
Magnus nods holding it up for Alec to read. Alec smiles, pulling the Lightwood piece heâd been holding onto from his pocket as Magnus does the same with his part.
Alexander the missing piece reads in Isabelleâs looping script.
âGuess your stuck with me now,â Magnus says with a smirk.
Alec rolls his eyes fondly.
âTechnically it hasnât been filed, so not officially,â he jokes, pulling Magnus in by the waist. âPlus itâs in three pieces I donât think the courthouse is going to accept it.â
âPfft, just needs a little tape,â Magnus says gathering the three pieces of paper and folding them carefully before placing them in the inner pocket of his wine-red jacket a compliment to Alecâs black one and Isabelleâs deep red dress. âPlus, Claryâs stepdad is the Mayor, we can totally get some strings pulled.â
Alec laughs shifting to drape his arms over Magnusâ shoulders.
âYou mean it?â he asks.
Magnus nods. âWe have to have a party bigger than this one at some point though,â he says gesturing back to the reception hall. âI have a reputation to uphold.â
âOf course,â Alec says seriously. Â âSo weâre gonna be Mr. and Mr. Lightwood then?â
Magnus hums tapping a finger to his chin in thought.
âI was thinking Mr. and Mr. Bane actually.â
âI like the sound of that,â Alec says before pulling Magnus into a kiss.
They never do piece together the night exactly. Eventually Izzy gets the ring off her thumb and it fits Alecâs ring finger perfectly they discover, Magnus in turn realizes he has an exact double of it that he starts wearing himself. Why Isabelle filled out the license or if they kissed after they said I do or even actually said it is never truly answered.
Their actual marriage will be a mystery for the rest of their lives, but Magnus does get his party an acceptable six months after Clary and Izzyâs.

Summary: âIs it just me, or have you been eyeing the elf from the mall entrance?â Alec smirked, glancing between the girl and Isabelle a few times with raised eyebrows. âYou know Iâm not one to judge but⊠really? Sheâs an elf, Isabelle.â
âI highly doubt that those ears are real, Alexander,â Izzy rolled her eyes. âAnd I havenât been eyeing anyone. I just find it curious that weâve already crossed paths with her three times. Weâve only been here for a little over an hour, and this mall is very big.â
Or: Isabelle might have a thing for the Christmas elf at the mall (just maybe).
For the @malecdiscordserver Advent Calendar
The girl had been there all afternoon.Â
Isabelle had first spotted her when she and Alec had walked into the mall, intent on finding gifts for their parents; sheâd been standing right in front of the doors, a bright smile on her flushed face and adorable elf ears framing her face.
Alec had mentioned how grateful he was that theyâd never had to take a job as Christmas workers at a shopping mall, but Isabelle had been far too distracted by how pretty the elf was. Not that sheâd told her brother that. He had enough reason to tease her as it was; the last thing she wanted was for him to realise that redheads with cute eyes and freckles were exactly her type. Heâd try to set her up at every occasion, and she did not need that kind of constant embarrassment.Â
However, sheâd found it increasingly harder not to let her gaze stray to the red-haired girl as theyâd passed her once, then twice, then thrice as they shopped. Alec hadnât commented on it yet, but Izzy knew it was only a matter of time. Heâd been too focused on Magnusâ gift to pay attention to his surroundings, but now that his boyfriendâs Christmas present had been found, Izzy knew she was in trouble.Â
She gave him thirty seconds to-

âAre you implying that we have a stalker?â Alec mock-whispered, chuckling when Isabelle nudged his ribs hard. âIâm kidding! But just so weâre clear, I donât buy your excuse at all. You think sheâs pretty, donât you?â
âOnly a fool would say no to that,â Izzy pointed out. âWell, fools and gay men, maybe. Although even you should be able to see how beautiful she is, elf ears and all.â
âSo you do have a thing for elves,â Alec cackled, dodging Izzyâs second nudge expertly. âSeriously, if you think sheâs that cute, maybe you should just go talk to her. Iâm sure sheâs dying for a break from whatever tedious job she has today. I know I would be if I had to deal with so many people in so little time.â
âThatâs because you donât know how to act around people,â Izzy piped up with a grin, ignoring her brotherâs responding glare. âAnd as great as your plan sounds, Iâm not sure sheâd be half as happy as you seem to think she would be. The last thing I would want after trying to sell candy canes for hours is for someone to accost me and distract me from my job.â
âSheâs selling candy canes?â Alecâs eyes lit up. âIzzy, youâve got to talk to her. Maybe if you flirt enough, you can get a few free treats. I promise Iâll come save you if she looks like sheâs about to kill you.â
âI donât even like candy canes,â Izzy frowned. âThey taste terrible.â
âFirst of all, thatâs a bold statement to make around me and you know it,â Alec raised his eyebrows, looking distinctly unimpressed. Izzy had to bite back a laugh at how serious he looked, wishing she had a camera at hand to take a picture for Magnus. âSecondly, the candy canes wonât be for you. Lastly and most importantly, you donât need to like candy canes; you already like the girl whoâs selling them.â
âI donât-â Isabelle cut herself off as Alec levelled her with the most disbelieving look sheâd ever seen.
So maybe he had a point. The redhead was prettier than any woman Izzy had ever met, and she seemed too sweet and happy not to be kind, and she was just right there, looking like she was trying her best not to let the smile drop from her face. Isabelle was a strong woman most of the time, but when it came to adorable girls? Yeah, sheâd been screwed from the start.Â
âIâm not getting you any candy canes,â she announced loudly as she strode away from Alec and headed straight for the mall worker.Â
The ginger girl had stepped away from the sea of people, propping herself against a shop wall and half heartedly twirling a candy cane between her fingers. The smile hadnât vanished from her features, but it looked far softer and tired than it had a few moments earlier; not that Izzy could blame her, given how exhausting her job had to be.Â
Steeling herself for rejection, Izzy took a deep breath and closed the last few feet that separated her from the woman.Â
âHi!â She announced as cheerfully and confidently as she could manage. The other woman startled slightly, her gaze snapping to Isabelle and her jaw dropping slightly as she finally spotted her. Izzy would be lying if she said she didnât preen a little at the obvious awe in the redheadâs eyes.Â
âUm, hi?â The girl said after a moment of silence and a slightly awkward clearing of her throat. âIâm sorry, did you want a candy cane? Iâm kind of on a break, not that my manager knows that, and I hardly get any of those on busy days, and Iâm not exactly in character at the momentâŠâ
âThatâs fine,â Izzy assured her quickly, sending her what she hoped was a soothing smile. âIâm not here to buy anything. I just- Well, I noticed you when my brother and I first came in, and then you kept popping up near the shops we stopped at and it felt like too much of a pattern for it to be a coincidence. Besides, youâre very pretty.â
She blurted out the last words before her brain could catch up with her mouth, and she cursed internally at the stricken look on the girlâs face. Sometimes, she wished she could be a little smoother when it mattered. Sure, she could charm the pants off her parentsâ clients, but what was that worth if she couldnât even keep it together while introducing herself to a woman? No wonder she was still single.Â
âSorry, I didnât mean to- That was completely inappropriate,â she added when the other girl didnât say anything. âYou must get hit on all the time by strangers and here I am doing the exact same thing, even though you told me you hardly got any breaks. Iâm sorry, Iâll just...â
âI donât mind,â the girl blushed brightly, glancing up at Izzy through her lashes. A sheepish smile tugged at her lips, and Isabelle almost melted on the spot. âIâm mostly approached by parents and kids, so I donât get hit on even half as much as you seem to think I do. Besides, us elves have a signal in case weâre getting harassed.â
âYou do?â Isabelle asked, impressed by the thought the mall had put into the wellbeing of their workers.
âAbsolutely not,â the girl burst out laughing. âBut my best friend works here too and I have him on speed dial. He also checks on me once in a while to make sure I havenât gotten kidnapped or murdered or anything of the sort. I promise you I would be more than capable of sending you packing if I minded your presence.â
âOh,â Izzy said softly. âSo you mean to say that-â
âThat I donât mind your presence, yes,â the redhead snorted. âItâs not every day I get to talk to someone as beautiful as you. Do you happen to have a name, or am I going to have to refer to you as the âpretty brunette shopper I met at work one timeâ for the rest of my life?âÂ
âI donât know, I think that title suits me quite well,â Isabelle grinned, holding her hand out for the other woman to shake. âIâm Isabelle, Izzy for short.â
âClary,â the redhead answered, holding onto Izzyâs hand for a little longer than was probably appropriate. Not that Isabelle minded in the slightest. âDo you have anything to do with the man whoâs been staring at us intensely for the last three minutes, or am I going to have to call security on a stalker?â
âWho are you- oh, yeah, thatâs my brother,â Izzy rolled her eyes, waving at Alec briefly before turning back towards Clary. âI should probably get back to him actually, but is there any way I could get your number, maybe?â
Before she could even finish her question, Clary was slipping a sketchpad and pencil out of her shoulder bag, scribbling what Isabelle assumed was a number on a ripped up piece of paper before tying it to the candy cane sheâd been playing with.Â
âDoes this work?â She asked with a shy smile as she handed the candy cane to Izzy.Â
âPerfectly,â Isabelle breathed out. âIt was a pleasure meeting you, Clary.â
âAnd you too, Izzy,â the redhead beamed. âHave a lovely afternoon!â
After such a wonderful interaction, Izzy didnât doubt that her afternoon would be very lovely indeed. Maybe she would even force herself to enjoy the candy cane Clary had gifted her, if only out of respect. After all, she wouldnât want to disappoint Clary by offering her present to someone else, no matter how excited Alec looked at the prospect of a candy cane.
Her brain is a broken record caught on Clary Fairchild: her mouth, her laugh, her warmth, and the knowledge that she asked for time and Clary gave it to her and now it is grinding inexorably on.
