Tim Roger’s been an open Clerith fan for his whole series, but he has confirmed what so many of us have been saying for literal years about Cloud and Aerith’s date. This is amazing for our community and will hopefully put an end to people telling us we’re “delusional.”

I’ve already mentioned the scenario of Cloud and Aerith’s meeting at the church being repeated in Crisis Core. Well, that was not the only scene that was copied from the OG to CC. Remember Zack and Aerith’s date in Green Park? Yeah. That one was modelled after a date that occurred in the OG – a date between none other than Cloud and Aerith.

Date in the Park:

In Scene 04-10, Zack and Aerith have a date in Green Park in the Sector 6 slum. An identical situation is seen in "FFVII" as well, which features a scene of Cloud and Aerith on a date in the same park. ~Crisis Core Ultimania

Yes, that’s right. This event in the game where Aerith asked to take a break in the park as she accompanied Cloud to Sector 7 is actually a date.

If that wasn’t clear enough, a date (noun) is defined as:

1. an appointment to meet someone or go out with them, especially someone with whom you are having, or may soon have, a romantic relationship ~Collins Dictionary

2. a social meeting planned before it happens, especially one between two people who have or might have a romantic relationship ~Cambridge Dictionary

Simply put, this moment is considered to be one with a romantic notion in it. This scene was meant to show the budding romance of Cloud and Aerith in the game, hinting at the level of intimacy they had between them, one where they are ultimately called to be lovers at the end.

This date sequence for Cloud and Aerith was also entitled “ラブラブなの～” meaning “lovey-dovey” in the debug room by Hiroki Chiba. Yes, the very same Hiroki Chiba who gave us WoFF and its memorable Clerith moment. Also, “ラブラブ” is used as SFX for romantic moments in manga.

This implies that Cloud and Aerith’s date at the park was meant to have a ‘lovey-dovey’ or romantic feel to it. In other words, that particular scene was put into the game with the intent of portraying a developing romance between Cloud and Aerith. Why else would they label that sequence as “lovey-dovey” if they did not mean to show the players of the growing attraction between Cloud and Aerith? Why put it in the game in the first place if Cloud and Aerith weren’t really meant to be lovers later on in the game?

If you’ve read as many romance mangas as I have, you would know that couples described as lovey-dovey are those who are very affectionate with each other publicly or outwardly expressive of their affections. Why did Square Enix, Hiroki Chiba particularly, label this moment as such?

Looking at the scene again, it could be seen as Cloud and Aerith having a tender moment to themselves with how they were sitting close together. In Japan, at least from what I’ve often heard and read about, they aren’t that open about public displays of affection and these moments are somehow rare or not often seen outside the home. It would then seem that the developers of the game wanted to play this scene out as something that is publicly intimate for Cloud and Aerith given the lovey-dovey title. After all, they are in full view of anyone who would pass by the same park.

It was also during this time that Aerith first shares about a past boyfriend, something which Cloud was curious enough about to make him ask if they had been serious, further implying his romantic interest in Aerith. This sort of conversation almost never occurs for people who are supposedly only friends. Everything in this scene just points to a growing romantic connection between the two.

Taking in the fact that two of the scenarios used for Cloud and Aerith were repeated for Zack and Aerith in Crisis Core is highly suggestive of romantic interpretations. This is because of the fact that for Square Enix to be able to actually show the romantic connection between Zack and Aerith given their short interactions, they decided to use similar scenarios from FF7 of a certain bodyguard and his flower girl. Their basis to establish some semblance of a romance for Zack and Aerith came from the original game’s own pair: Cloud and Aerith. So if you hold those as romantic moments for Zack and Aerith, do not even think about arguing against it for Cloud and Aerith.

It’s just Nobuo Uematsu casually saying  that “Words Drowned By Fireworks” is

 "the song that plays during the date scene between the hero and heroine."

They’re just casually referring to the clerith date like its not even optional.

i am so sorry for pointing out that you posted something misleading.

You keep saying that and you’re just plain wrong. You’re purposely not understanding just for the sake of arguing and you need to zip your lip and watch the video.

On top of the fact that a professional journalist that knows the language ALSO says the same damn thing. I have (as I said) even been told how romantic this phrase is by my Japanese penpals, too.

This isn’t some conspiracy against your ships. This is just how the phrase is used in their culture. It literally means “I want to meet you” but in a romantic way to convey that one party wants to romantically be with the other person. It’s usually used when couples haven’t seen each other in a while and they miss one another (i.e Kagome saying it to Inyuasha; she says “watashi aitai” instead). It’s basically a “let’s be together” kind of thing for lack of a better wording.

Cloud finally said Aerith’s name!!

This is found in the Museum Gallery in  Itadaki Street: Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary. This is #31 of 48 (in total) and this is the only one that relates to the LTD/Clerith (I’m watching to see if there’s anything else, though). Cloud says:

観覧車に乗っている時きっとエアリスは気づいていたんだな。俺が目を背けていた本当の俺自身に。

"When (we) were riding on the ferris-wheel I'm sure Aerith was aware of the real me, whom I looked/turned away from." (Translation provided by cynthiapril via twitter)

Basically, Cloud is acknowledging that Aerith knew the “real” him, even while he “turned away” from his “real” self. Not only does this *finally* put to rest that ridiculous myth that Aerith “only loved Cloud for Zack”, but it also tells us that Cloud knew what Aerith meant later on and acknowledged that she was the first to speak up about it. 

I hope this game gets released in English... I need to hear Steve say Aerith’s name so bad!
