A20. the one where you donât know your soulmate until you hear them say your name.
They come up the stairs of the house together, Clint and a woman who almost looksâŠblurry.Â
Laura frowns, boosting Lila a little higher on her hip, and Lila curls her tiny, chubby fingers into the collar of Lauraâs cardigan. âYeah, do you see Daddy?â she murmurs, bouncing her gently. âIt looks like heâs brought a friend home, hm? Letâs go see.âÂ
She leaves the nursery, heading down the main staircase just in time to hear the front door open, Clintâs gorgeous, familiar voice calling, âHoney, Iâm home!â She rolls her eyes, fond and just shy of amused.
âHi, sweetheart,â she says, coming around the corner, and sheâstops.
There is a woman next to Clint, and Laura canâtâŠcanât quite focus on her, not properly. Sheâs not tall and not short, her hair isâŠred, maybe? For a moment, Laura squints at her, trying to get a proper look, and she thinks she sees green eyes, full lips, loose curls. Itâs a beautiful face, she thinks, before it blurs again, and Laura canât quite tell why this feels familiar.
âLaur,â Clint says, stepping up to her and wrapping an arm around her waist. Automatically, she tips her head up to kiss his jaw. âI need you to meet someone. And to, uh, not get mad?â
A soft laugh from the woman on Clintâs other side, and it settles over Lauraâs bones. âI told you not to lead with that,â she says, and Laura sees a hand extend toward her.Â
âHi,â the woman says. âIâm Natasha, Clintâs partner. Itâs good to finally meet you, Laura.âÂ
Oh, she thinks, as her vision clears, and Natashaâs clear green eyes, lovely and bright, swim into view beside Clintâs, as gorgeous as theyâve been since he said her name in a bar and brought color rushing into her world.Â
Laura smiles. âHello, Natasha,â she says, and is so, so glad that she can see it clearly as Natashaâs lips curve in a smile.Â
