A Class 40 at Crewe in 1961, in original green livery. This was the first of the 40s to be withdrawn, condemned in 1966 after a head-on collision with runaway freight. Suffice to say, photographs of it are rare and moreso in colour.
A new Type 4/Class 40 diesel, in its original 'giant green box' guise. It's pictured on the East Coast Main Line with an express, in that small window between their 1958 introduction and the 1961-2 service commencement of the Deltics which quickly saw the 40s superseded from this route.

Weird Thomas idea- Devious Diesel (or one of the one off snooty diesels) being a Flying Dutchman type engine; their horrible reputation cursing them to forever wander the rails because no railway will take them in. (Cue that one MTA "He'll never return" song)
