I first wrote about the CLAE Bradley Low sneaker two years ago. On the lookout for a minimalist white court sneaker for refined casual outfits, I was drawn to the Bradley’s clean lines, full-grain leather uppers, available half-sizing, and relatively affordable price.
At the time, I went to pains to emphasize that the Bradley is not a true alternative to the quintessential Common Projects Achilles Low: the soles aren’t stitched, the finish not quite as fine, and, well, aesthetically it’s closer to the Common Projects Achilles Retro Low anyways. But then, the Bradley retails for about a third of what a pair of Common Projects does, and you can often find the Bradley steeply discounted at HauteLook and Nordstrom Rack.
Since writing that post two years ago, the CLAE Bradley has become a regular part of my shoe rotation. I wear them two or three times a week, don’t baby them (they’re often my go-to for running around the park with my kids), and they’ve held up well.
The Bradley comes in a surprisingly versatile number of variations. While I personally like the neoprene heel accent and ecru sole, an all-white version is available for you true minimalists. There’s also a mid top version, a stitched-welt version (honestly not a fan of the contrast welt), and even a vegan version.

I’ve been looking for minimal white leather sneakers over the past few months--the kind of thing you’d wear casually with slim denim or chinos, or dress up with tailored trousers and a rakish polo.
Anyone in menswear circles knows the default answer for that profile: the Common Projects Achilles Low. I’m all for paying for quality, but still have trouble wrapping my head around dropping around $400 on a pair of sneakers, or $250ish when they’re on sale. Even alternatives that come in just under $200 (Greats, Epaulet, Oliver Cabell, Kent Wang, Gustin) are a bit much for me.
My price ceiling for sneakers is more like $100. The obvious candidate in that range is of course the original sneaker that inspired all of the above: the Stan Smith. But the perforated “Three Stripe” side panels still aren’t quite clean enough for me. Eventually, I came across something that looked right and fit my budget: the Clae Bradley at Nordstrom Rack.
The Bradleys have a lot going for them: minimalist detailing, full-grain leather uppers, and--near and dear to my heart--half sizes for a more precise fit. Common Projects, if I recall correctly, are only available in full Euro sizes, (40,41,42, etc.).
It would be tempting to yell “COMMON PROJECTS ALTERNATIVE UNDER $100!”, but the Bradley really isn’t that. I’ve never handled the Achilles Low in person, but it’s evident just looking at product photos that the $400 sneaker has finer stitching and a cleaner finish (especially around the tongue, heel, and forequarters). There’s also the rubber sole: Common Projects are famously stitched to the uppers, while the Bradleys are almost certainly glued.
I couldn’t find much about Clae online, though the few reviews I did come across were generally positive, so I opted to purchase the pair pictured above to see and wear for myself. Initial impressions: the leather seems quite good, though the real test of quality will be long-term wear. I’m not in a position to compare the shape to other sneakers inspired by the Stan Smith, but I found it had the sort of slim silhouette that I wanted. The contrast rubber sole is not as starkly different from the uppers as the product photos would indicate, and it’s a great look. The neoprene heel accent is a nice touch when putting them on, and reminiscent of the Common Projects Achilles Retro.
My true shoe size is an 8 Wide, and I opted for a 8.5D in the Bradley. I found my heels slipped a bit, so I used a lace lock for a tighter fit. I could probably squeeze into an 8D, but I’m happy with the pair I have as is. They were immediately comfortable out of the box for a full day’s wear, probably because of the EVA midsole. On their first day out, I wore them with a chestnut suede bomber, textured linen sweater, and slim washed denim. They looked fantastic, and overall I’m quite happy with them. I think my search for minimalist white sneakers is over.
While the Bradleys normally retail for $140, Nordstrom Rack has a bunch of colorways on clearance for under $60.Â
Note: the Clae Bradleys have been discounted to under $45 this weekend for Nordstrom Rack’s for the “Clear the Rack” event.
