This couldn’t be happening. 

Star knew there would be some pushback when it was revealed that she was the one who destroyed magic, and it was kind of her (and Marco’s) fault that Earth and Mewni were combined. She hadn’t expected the stares and whispers to become so hostile, or the mothers to draw their children in close when she passed by, and the first time she received a death threat in her locker she burst into tears. 

“They’re just jealous of your awesomeness,” Janna said.

“I’m so sorry that this is happening to you,” Tom said.

“Let ‘em come! They’ll face my wrath,” Marco said.

The image of Marco unleashing his karate on unsuspecting strangers brought a giggle to Star’s lips. “Thanks, Marco,” she replied, but she couldn’t shake the uneasiness off. Had destroying all magic really been the right thing? Hekapoo seemed to think it was, even though she was made of magic and would die with the rest of the Magic High Commission. Marco missed her, Star knew. 

“Hey.” Marco put a hand on her shoulder. “You did the only thing you could. One Solarian warrior was hard enough to fight. A whole army? There wasn’t any other choice.”

“Why does it feel like the wrong one, though?” Star didn’t mean to say it, but the words came anyway. “You miss Hekapoo, I know you do! She was your friend, and now she’s gone forever.”

He sighed. “Yeah, I miss her a lot. But what else were we going to do? Let Mina and everyone else kill all the monsters?” 

“You’re right.” As complicated as her feelings were, she had to admit that there wasn’t anything else she could do against the Solarian warriors. If only her mom hadn’t made them . . .! Why did she think that was a good idea? They could’ve taken one Solarian warrior–Mina–but Moon just had to go and make a bunch more!

Marco’s brow furrowed, as if he could see her internal struggle. “Hugs?” He offered.

“Hugs.” Star buried her head in his shoulder, her voice muffled. 

“Hey. We’ll get through this. We’ve made it through everything before, after all,” he said gently.

“Yeah, you’re right.” They were best friends and boyfriend and girlfriend, and they’d been through so much together. 

They would make it through this too.
