The highest peak at Great Smoky Mountains National Park is officially reverting to its Cherokee name more than 150 years after a surveyor named it for a Confederate general.
The US Board of Geographic Names voted on Wednesday in favor of a request from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians to officially change the name Clingmans Dome to Kuwohi, according to a news release from the park. The Cherokee name for the mountain translates to âmulberry place.â
If the Black Seminoles were Indians, why did they speak African Creole & had African names?
You don't want to mess with this dude
Dragging Canoe á„áł áŠá áá, Tsiyu Gansini (1738-1792) a Chickamauga Cherokee war chief, was the last Chickamauga (tsikamaka) chief to preside over the state of Kentucky. Though some Chickamaugas remain in Kentucky to this day, most went to southern Tennessee. He survived smallpox as a child and numerous wars only to die of a heart attack.

Finalmente, apĂłs a noite horrĂvel, o sol aparece e a venda Ă© removida.

I am not so sweet on old Andy [Jackson]. He is the one that run us Cherokees out of Georgia and North Carolina⊠Old Andy, every time he couldnât find anyone to jump on, he would come back and pounce onto us Indians⊠Then he would go to Florida and shoot up the Seminoles. Then he would have a row with the government, and they would take his command and his liquor away from him, and he would come back and sick himself onto us Cherokees again⊠They sent the Indians to Oklahoma.  They had a treaty that said, âYou shall have this land as long as the grass grows and the water flows.â It looked like a good treaty, and it was, till they struck oil. Then the Government took it away from us again. They said the treaty only refers to water and grass; it donât say anything about oil.â

This engraved frontispiece shows the Cherokee war chief Ostenaco. While the details of his life are hazy, it is well-known that he was extensively traveled and a leading diplomat between the Cherokee and the British. He was born around 1710 in modern-day Tennessee and over the course of his life ranged as far as Virginia, Pennsylvania, the Carolinas, and Georgia for purposes as diverse as diplomacy, war, and resettlement. A warrior of great prowess, he allied with the British against the French and later the rebellious American colonies. In addition, Ostenaco was one of three Cherokee leaders who traveled to London in 1762. Following the American Revolution, Americans razed Cherokee towns in reprisal for the Cherokeeâs allegiance to the British. Ostenaco and his followers settled in remote Georgia and then Tennessee, sporadically raiding American towns and commerce. He died in 1780, aged roughly 70 years.Â
