Recently, I've gotten into Chen Li's (陈粒)music. Her debut album, 如也, is a work of beauty, and she has an ethereal voice mixed with down to earth production. 《历历万象》 exemplifies that, with its thoughtful lyrics on life and its search for meaning.
--洪流(hong2liu2): a powerful current, a flood
--仓皇(cang1huang2): in a panic, flurried
--途径(tu2jing1): to pass by, by way of
--白茫茫(bai2mang2mang2): a vast expanse of white
--辗转(zhan3zhuan3): to toss and turn, to indirectly, to wander
--限时(xian4shi2): limited time
--赠送(zeng4song4): to present as a gift
--朝阳(chao2yang2)/(zhao1yang2): to be exposed to the sun/morning sun
--牵挂 (qian1gua4): to be worried about, to be concerned about
--万水千山(wan4shui3qian1shan1): thousands of waters and mountains (lit), a long and difficult road
--相逢(xiang1feng2): to meet by chance, to come across
--顽强 (wan2qiang2): tenacious, hard to defeat
She lives on July's flood;
the rooftops topple ideals into the depths.
She takes a nap on a reed washed away, with the north wind passing in a panic.
The grasslands in her dreams are all in white;
on the train, sadness and joy goes out to wander.
She once tried every limited edition candy, given from foreign lands.
If I stand on the sunrise, is it possible to throw off yesterday's depression?
Could frail words transmit all of my worries?
If one day I don't courageously resume going forward, could I persist in this phase?
Stepping through a long and winding road, there's always a home.
The city is generous with all their lights at night,
as a child is not afraid of the long years.
She doesn't want much; nothing like what other people do--
inversed candle light adds more tea for me.
The meeting is too short to wait for a lot of tea;
the habits you've dropped are hard to beat--they live on my body.
If I stand on the sunrise, is it possible to throw off yesterday's depression?
Could frail words transmit all of my worries?
If one day I don't courageously resume going forward, could I persist in this phase?
Stepping through a long and winding road, there's always a home.
She walks on a horseshoe with extra sounds;
sunset ignites, leaves several scenes behind.
She explains to strangers the stranger's landscape,
waiting for her to return, sit, and speak to me.
In the olden days, the complexions of old friends didn't see many changes;
yet what we wanted then is not like what we wanted now.
