Understanding Emptiness in Buddhism – Part 2 [Part1]
The original word for emptiness is 'sunya' in Sanskrit and 'sunna' in Pali. Etymologically, sunya means "inflated, hollow, or the number zero".
The inflated thing is hollow inside. We think there is substance here. But substantiality is in the end only limited. This does not mean that it will exist forever in the future. It exists only for a limited time. Therefore, substantivity is not something that can be claimed in nirvana. It is not something that is recognised in the ultimate sense. That which appears to be substantial is in essence vague. One day it will lack and perish.
When the word is taken up and used in Buddhism, it is an expression of strong negation, but at the same time it positively implies the ultimate true existence, and is intended, so to speak, “to affirm through negation, to intuit the absolute by the negation of the relative."
In Mahayana Buddhism, empty doesn’t necessarily mean empty nothingness. It is the position that "we see existence as an entity, liberate the self, which suffers from attachment, and practise the emptiness towards others out of compassion for the equality of self and others". Emptiness should at all costs be understood in a simple way.
The Prajnaparamita Sutra therefore uses 10 different metaphors to explain the Emptiness:
1. illusion, 2. fire, 3. moon reflextion on the water, 4. empty sky, 5. echo, 6. mirage, 7. dream, 8. shadow, 9. image in the mirror, 10. transformation

仏教における空(虚空)・その2(その1)
空の原語は、サンスクリット語では「シューニヤ」、パーリ語では「スソニヤ」 である。語源的にみると、シューニヤは「ふくれあがった、うつろな、または数字の0」という意味である。
ふくれあがった ものは中がうつろである。われわれは,ここに実体があると思っている。けれども、実体性はしょせん限定されたものにすぎない。これが未来永久に存在するわけではない。ある限られた時間の聞だけ存在するものである。だから実体性は、勝義 (しょうぎ: ことばを超えた究極的な最高の真理のことで、すなわち涅槃(ねはん)をさす)においていえることではない。 究極において認められるものではない。どこまでも限られた意味において実在するものであ る。実体とみえるものも本質はうつろである。いつかは欠けて滅びるものである。
仏教がこの語を取り上げて用いるとき、それは強い否定の表現であると同時に、究極の真の存在を積極的に意味し、いわば「否定を通じて肯定すること、相対の否定によって絶対を直観すること」が意図されている。
大乗仏教でいう空という意味は、かならずしも空無を意味しているわけではない。「存在を 実体としてとらえ、執着によって苦しむ自己を解放し、他者にたいしては、自他平等の慈悲心 から空観を実践する」という立場があるのである。空はなんとしても平易に理解されるべきも のである。
そこで、般若経は十種の比喩を用いて空を説明する:
1.幻(まぼろし)、 2.焰(ほのお) 、3.水中の月、4.虚空(こくう) 5.響(ひびき) 6.揮閲婆城(けんだつばじょう、蜃気楼をさすとされる)、 7.夢(ゆめ)、 8.影(かげ)、 9.鏡中の像、10.化
