I had a conversation with Becks @ Tarren Production earlier.
Becks; I am interested in Cheeky Fest from a production and entertainment angle: it seems like a really interesting project, and I am always curious as to how and if there is any scope for production or design elements to be involved in. I've been around the block a few times! I think the community arts is always quite fascinating, and I think that giving things back to the community and providing local experiences is incredibly valuable. Tarren Production could be interested in supporting you from a production angle. To get people interested I think the first step is to focus on exactly what it is you are wanting to achieve. and once that is highlighted, you can begin to approach interested parties who you think the project would benefit/appeal to.'
Me: community arts - inspiring, encouraging, empowering, facilitating, connecting, breaking rules / boundaries of what (music / ...) can / should be, collaborative / cross-form work (i.e. music + dance),
Becks; I've been involved in local/political theatrical productions, a lot of outdoor events including the Cheltenham Festivals Charity events, Wilderness, my company does production for Valley Fest, ... We also produce all production and build creative for Cheltenham Jazz, Literature, Science and Music festivals
Me; I want one of the Reasons for the Fest to be ' opportunity to get Paid Work' - for those who haven't - not just to pay people because that's what they deserve.
Becks; I see! ok. Interesting. I think that to achieve something like that involves a bit of safeguarding, and would have to be quite solid in its production. And also a few weeks work for people out of work is probably a logistical nightmare for them if they are on allowances or credits. I think it it makes life a lot easier when you have paid professionals.
Me; Even if it's just getting paid a decent/fair amount to perform for..15..30..45 minutes. For more permanent / full time Staff, it'd be more. If some are happy to perform / work for free, then great, but I want to start from the basis of paying people.
Becks; I think you'd have to speak to someone from the DWP if they are out of work about how possible that is. Or maybe look at costing the full project with everyone getting paid then go for grants.
