My primary care doctor at the time told me it was nothing to worry about. I remember noticing the lump in photos all the way back to 2009. But it was ânothing to worry aboutâ. Fast forward to my summer of freshman year leading into sophomore year... ultrasounds, biopsies, HELL. this is the most important thing I will ever post and I urge you to check your neck, your family members, friends etc. Ifyou see a lump like this, GO TO YOUR DOCTOR. GET AN ULTRASOUND. GET A BIOPSY!!! It SAVED my life. I remember my doctor saying if I let this go another year, I probably wouldnât be here and wouldnât even know what killed me. This is REAL. This isnât meant to scare you, but to spread awareness and hopefully save someoneâs life. I hope my story can HELP someone one day and if it does, then it makes it all worth it. September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month. This week also marks my 8th cancerversary. Itâs when life as I once knew it, changed forever. I had a visible lump on my neck the size of a pea and was given 4 different diagnoses. And although I insisted on a biopsy, I kept being told it wasnât cancer. I had to go to a civilian doctor, and pay out of pocket for a biopsy. And it came back as...well you guessed it, cancer. I thought it was Godâs sick way of making me a runner. Let me explain... I was a big girl in my early 20âs (Iâm talking size 26 lane Bryant). I started lifting weights and dropped about 110lbs. I even entered a body building figure show and actually placed lol. I was a freakin beast in the gym but cardio was never my favorite. I would put running off any chance I got. And ways I did that was convincing myself I needed to âlearnâ about running and truly âunderstandâ the principles. I invested in cute running gear and the latest gadgets. Itâs as if I was priming myself. So when they told me it was cancer, I couldnât help but imagine myself running in some local charity 5k (which I still havenât done btw). I would find myself trying to bargain with some higher power. I still try to make sense of things sometimes but in the end, itâs always the same answer. The courage lies in living another day. Health is precious and most valuable. Iâm hot... like LITERALLY hot ALL the time. I have to have a fan on me 90% of the time. I canât go outside on hot dayâs for very long and I take cold showers because if I take a hot shower it will take me an hour just to cool down enough to function. Why do I share? Because for the past 6 years Iâve been consistently like this and last summer I finally received the Graves Disease diagnosis. So I post this in the hopes that I can help someone else, like me who didnât know they had a thyroid disorder. If you have lump in your neck, hand tremors that cause you to drop things, constant overheating to the point of mild heatstroke you may need to get your thyroid checked... itâs a lot more than just weight loss or gain.
