ch227 reveals something that made me 99% sure that demon in modri’s memories is not sebastian.

..what?

“my impulsive comrade”, “our weakness”… these demons are not working alone.

but a comrade. an impulsive one, at that. what an interesting word choice.

if other demons have this kind of view to each other then why does sebastian say he’s never had a friend if he’s had comrades and family?

also why would another demon impulsively tell humans how to make weapons that can destroy them? the kanji that make up this word for “impulsive” (which more accurately means “on a whim” or “eccentric”) is interesting “drunk, poisoned, spellbound” and “lunatic, crazy, confused” because there’s almost this connotation that this demon is looking down on that one for being strange enough to give a “weakness” of the demons to humans (a weakness he doesn’t seem to believe they have, that’s also odd).

but this isn’t sebastian because he doesn’t seem to have any camaraderie with other demons. hell, he doesn’t seem to even know this group of exorcists existed because in the first volume he talks about human weaponry and this is what he says

if we take the clothing in the flashback as guidance, modri was alive presumably a 100 years ago.

anyway did nobody else pick up on the other demon being mentioned by modri’s demon that seemed to have helped humans build anti demon weaponry? why did that demon do that? did he want to help people out of curiosity? was it part of a contract where a human asked for a demon’s weakness? or was he just sick of living (did he want to die… for some reason)? wait, can demons starve? can death scythes actually finish them off? also what of that weapon layla had that the death scythe couldn’t cut? are they related to the demon-hunting weapons these exorcists have? modri uses knives too and UT knows of the exorcists (and probably their weapons) since he finds modri after one of those battles (while wearing a suit and having a fresh scar)…

but hold on, if his scar is fresh, is this revival around the time he destroyed reaper HQ (1819~)? why did he revive an exorcist when sebastian and ciel weren’t even contracted yet? fucking claudia wasn’t even born yet (she was born in 1830), let alone vincent or the ciels. what the fuck is even going on

What's going on? Who are all these people?

The only thought that came to my mind is that I'm not reading a story about a black butler right now, but a completely different one. This exorcist club needs its own separate story, because Yana has drawn so many different characters, each of whom could have their own backstory (or maybe we're in for an arc dedicated to this clan)

Enough time has passed to try to be normal about this panel. Difficult.

It feels like this should be a considerable hint towards Undertaker's story.

It is now clear that it wasn't Vincent, the twins, or even Claudia that ignited his obsession with bringing the death back to life. And he was telling the truth when he said the experiments began long ago.

I've always thought he got the scars when he deserted, or that the scars are because of his escape attempt in some way. I do not think there is another entity (one alone) that he could have fought to get the scars, I doubt this. The scars looks like he either was restrained (considering the scar that goes along his eye especially) or they were inflicted because of some experiments either by the organization or by himself. But Othello doesn't seem like he got to put his hands on him yet.

This whole thing with Modri couldn't have been from when he was obediently collecting the souls as he should have, back from when his hair was up in a ponytail and all.

But further than this, the suit messes with me severely. Did he continue wearing a suit for some time after he managed to escape? Or did this happen in the ambiguous 20 years timeline after the attempt to escape from 70 years ago and before the time when he says he was last called a grim reaper, 50 years ago? Maybe in those 20 years he continued to act somewhat more like a reaper. Or maybe he was detained in some way and this is soon after he managed to escape that.

Ooor, stepping into crack theory territory, they did take his death scythe when he first attempted to escape, and he went back for it 20 years later, and that's how he got the cuts and why he was dressed like that.

Now how did he find Modri is also a good question, we shall leave that aside for now, but it is clear why Modri was an excellent project because of his strong will to live.

Overall, yeah, the suit just messes with me, but it does feel like it should be a hint. I don't think this is from 70 years ago or prior to that, it should be either from 50 years ago, or within that 20 years time, and it could be a hint of what he was doing in that 20 years time before no one called him a reaper anymore.
