The flashing cameras almost blinded you the second the two of you stepped out of the black SUV.
โMichael! Michael over here!โ
โHow long have you two been together?โ
โMichael, is the relationship getting serious?โ
โY/N! Y/N!โ
Michaelโs hand tightened around yours immediately, thumb rubbing softly against your skin in that quiet way he always did whenever crowds got overwhelming.
โYou okay?โ he murmured softly.
You looked over at him in disbelief.
โAm I okay? Baby, are you okay? They yellinโ like zoo animals.โ
Michael physically had to bite back a smile.
โBabyโ
โNo, because why are they barking at us?โ
The interview host standing near the carpet entrance laughed awkwardly before quickly straightening up when Michael looked over.
Michael lowered his head slightly, curls falling near his face as he tried to compose himself.
โCโmon,โ he whispered, gently guiding you forward.
The relationship had gone public barely three weeks ago, and the media had been losing their minds ever since.
Not because Michael Jackson had a girlfriend.
But because you were absolutely terrible at public relations.
You didnโt smile politely at rude questions.
You didnโt dodge disrespect.
And you definitely didnโt care about Hollywood etiquette.
Which explained why Michaelโs publicist currently looked like she was five seconds away from cardiac arrest.
The interviewer smiled brightly as cameras zoomed in.
โItโs wonderful to have you both here tonight.โ
โThank you,โ Michael answered sweetly.
You nodded. โAppreciate it.โ
The interviewer turned toward Michael first.
โSo Michael, your fans have been very curious about this relationship. Itโs definitely surprised a lot of people.โ
Michael smiled politely. Calm. Practiced.
โWell, Iโm very happy,โ he said gently. โSheโs very special to me.โ
Then the interviewer looked at you.
โAnd whatโs it like dating the biggest star in the world?โ
You shrugged.
โHe steals my food.โ
Michael looked scandalized.
โI do not steal your food.โ
โYes you do.โ
โI ask for it.โ
โYou ask after itโs already halfway gone micheal.โ
The interviewer laughed softly.
Michael covered part of his face, already embarrassed.
Then the interviewer made the mistake.
โSoโฆโ she started carefully, โthereโs obviously been conversation online about your age and maturity level compared to Michaelโs. Some people think you may not fully understand the pressure that comes with being with someone like him.โ
Michaelโs smile dropped instantly.
You felt his hand squeeze yours once.
Warning, begging even...
Please donโt.
โUh,โ Michael started softly, โI donโt really think...โ
โAnd some critics,โ the interviewer continued, โhave questioned whether youโre prepared for this kind of public relationship.โ
Michael inhaled slowly.
โBaby,โ he whispered under his breath.
Too late.
You blinked at the woman.
โWhat kinda stupid-ass question is that?โ
The entire audience and crew went silent.
Michael froze beside you.
The interviewer stared.
Cameras zoomed in on you so fast it was almost violent.
You frowned.
โNo seriously. How are you qualified to have this job if thatโs what you ask people?โ
โbabyโ Michael whispered, horrified.
โIโm serious,โ you continued. โYโall get paid to be weird and disrespectful on television and then act shocked when somebody says something back.โ
The interviewer looked absolutely stunned.
โWell, I...โ
โAnd another thing,โ you cut in. โEvery interview this man does, somebody feels comfortable disrespecting him as long as they smile while doing it.โ
Michael looked down at the floor, shoulders already shaking slightly.
โYou ask rude questions, pry into his personal life, make slick comments, then try to hide behind professionalism when people call it out. Itโs weird.โ
The interviewer opened and closed her mouth for a second.
โAnd now suddenly Iโm immature because Iโm not sitting here pretending that question wasnโt rude?โ
โBaby,โ Michael mumbled weakly, โyou canโt say that on television.โ
โYes I can.โ
โNo you canโt.โ
โYes I can and I will.โ
โAnd honestly,โ you continued, โhalf the interviews he does feel less like interviews and more like yโall trying to see how uncomfortable you can make him before he reacts.โ
Michael physically turned away now, trying to hide the fact that he was laughing.
The interviewer awkwardly cleared her throat.
โS-So Michaelโฆ about the question I asked earlier...โ
โWhat she said,โ Michael answered immediately.
The interviewer stared at him in disbelief.
Michael finally looked back over at you with the brightest grin youโd seen all night.
--------
By the time the two of you finally made it inside the venue, the tension from the interview had completely shifted.
Mostly because Michael could not stop laughing.
โYou embarrassed me,โ he whispered as the two of you walked through the hallway toward the backstage area.
You looked at him incredulously.
โI embarrassed you?โ
โYes,โ he said immediately, still smiling. โYou attacked that poor woman.โ
โShe attacked you first.โ
Michael shook his head, curls bouncing slightly.
โYou called her stupid on live television.โ
โI said the question was stupid.โ
โThat is not better.โ
You crossed your arms dramatically.
โWell maybe she should stop asking dumb questions then.โ
Michael tried to stay serious for about three seconds before another laugh escaped him.
โThere you go again,โ he mumbled.
โOh, donโt do that,โ you said, pointing at him. โDonโt act so pleased with me now after sitting there acting all shocked.โ
โI was shocked!โ
โYou were laughing!โ
โI was trying not to!โ
You narrowed your eyes at him suspiciously.
โYou liked it.โ
Michael immediately looked away.
Which told you everything.
Your mouth dropped open.
โOh my God, you DID like it.โ
โI did not say that.โ
โYou didnโt have to.โ
Michael covered part of his face with one hand, already smiling again.
โYou shouldโve seen your publicistโs face,โ you continued. โThat lady looked like she was about to pass out.โ
โShe probably was.โ
โWell maybe next time theyโll stop asking you weird questions.โ
Michael slowed down slightly then.
The teasing expression on his face softened into something else, something softer.
Something genuine.
โYou really donโt like when people disrespect me, huh?โ
You looked at him like the answer shouldโve been obvious.
โNo. I donโt.โ
For a second, Michael just stared at you.
Then he smiled again.
